The uproar over this specific error reflects a pretty clear political strategy. Catch the other side with its pants down, single it out not just as singularly egregious but unique to the side you oppose, and thereby discredit the other side broadly. Cosmopolitan made this mistake, so the whole mainstream media is fake news! This rationalizes preference for alternative news, ignoring the fact that these sources almost always commit the MSM's sins more often and even more deliberately — a key reason they aren't mainstream in the first place. Somehow people correctly adopt skepticism and then this gets transformed into something as bad as or worse than uncritical acceptance.

CNN/Fox/Huff are a lot more likely to slant than outright lie.

Buzzfeed-esque stuff is significantly more damaging.

And skepticism for the sake of skepticism is bad.

Don't know anything about Black Bloc, but white nationalists aren't a danger because they follow some biased news sources. They are a danger to others because of their ideology. The members of BLM who proved to be a danger to others- the same reason. The ethics of journalism might be a problem but a biased media story doesn't make someone harm or murder someone who disagrees with them. This is on that person.

You can hold someone responsible for their actions while still creating an environment where they're less likely to misbehave

Here's the problem I see here. You do say it's the ideology. But what FEEDS that ideology. The media (or wherever they get their information from). If they get this biased opinion/fake news fed to them all the time that their ideology has a point and that whatever they're against is evil. Then yeah, it is the media.

Now I'm not saying the media is giving them the gun and making them shoot someone or drag someone from their car and beat them within an inch of their life. But it fuels their preconceived stereotypes of another group.

I mean hell, this is getting into a stereotype thing now. EVERYONE stereotypes. But imagine you're only listening to media that puts out info that agrees with your beliefs. When they put the group you stereotype in a bad light constantly because of their own biases. Then yes, it is a problem in the media. It isn't 100% their fault. Because ultimately it's the person performing the act of violence.

But when you have an echo chamber that supports such behaviour and doesn't show the bad side of their own (the ones doing the harm which would end up being these people having to look in a mirror), then they believe they are in the right.

Not part of the OP's point (because lol), but an important nuance of journalistic shilling
