Top 10:

Taiwan - Broken Social Scene - KC Accidental: Cool opening, the beat is dynamic and interesting. What an intriguing sound they have going here! The guitars/strings(?) are like just wandering around and kind of whining in the background ambiently while the singer sings. Oh man and then the punchy part! Hey, yo, this is pretty cool. I will vote for this. GOOD.

Canada - Emerson String Quartet - No. 8 Mvt. 2: The soundtrack to a midnight chase on foot through the foggy, damp streets of London. But no, this is actually pretty cool. It accomplishes a lot more with just strings than I'm used to hearing. I like the constancy of the rhythm and how the task of rhythm-keeping shifts around between instruments. Cool! I like it. Maybe I will check ou the whole thing. GOOD.

Uruguay - Son Little - Waikiki: I like the guitar. I somewhat like the chorus. I like the recording. I like the song structure. Lotta stuff I like here. GOOD.

Micronesia - Grayson Erhard - Bygones: I actually feel like this would've been better if the guitar were turned down in the mix. The tapping is redeeming this song for me right now. I'm kind of a sucker for legato. He's an all right singer, no Dallas Green or anything, but who is. I guess I feel like the singing takes a back seat to the guitar and for a song featuring only a singer and an acoustic guitar you almost always have to have better balance between the two to make it really work. So, overall, this is fine but I'm not excited about it. DECENT.

Libya - Joe McPhee - Shakey Jake: Dude with a saxophone, I already like it. Whoah, and it's dueling saxes even. Bold. This is the kind of jazz I like just having on in the background, but I'm not huge on the actual song because...well, it's basically just one long jam sesh. Nearing the end and I don't think the rhythm section has changed it up once. So, nice to listen to, and I'm almost always down for jazz, but this ain't quite my cup of tea. Still, my favorite so far. DECENT.

CAR - John Lennon - Steel and Glass: This is pretty enjoyable. I like how much he plays around with the instrumentation and guitar tones and stuff. I like it more than Imagine, which I think is pretty overrated and is also the only other solo John song I've heard. DECENT.

Comoros - Confidence Man - Boyfriend: Huh. This is kind of interesting. Especially the big "RE-PEAT" in the chorus. The random vocalizations/chatter in the background. This isn't the kind of thing I'm usually into, but I sorta like this. Probably not enough to check out more, but on its own, ya know it's probably worth some points. DECENT.

Spain - Junior Senior - Can I Get Get Get: Well, it's catchy. It's also a tad silly and shallow for my taste. And there's so much chorus. I mean, I could maybe vote for it. I sorta like it, sorta. But not high points. DECENT.

Italy - Under the Influence of Giants - Mama's Room: Hey nice vocals. And good funky guitar-ness. It winds up being a pretty simple song overall, but idk there's something appealing to me here. DECENT.

Western Sahara - Constructus Corporation - Long Street: Well this is weird. I've heard stuff in this universe before and been annoyed by it but this is all right. It is a tad repetitive, but the vocalist makes it pretty entertaining. The longer this goes on the more I wish there was even just a tiny little bit of variation in the backing track. It's getting boring. Oh look, one second of violin! That was fun while it lasted. Maybe, maybe I could give this low points. DECENT.

Selected sentences from my notes on everything outside my top 10:

Fiji - Komatsu and Kosei - Kagen no Tsuki: With no other type of TV show do people appear to be such fans of theme songs.

Japan - Josh Ritter - Harrisburg: Hey man, good set, yeah I really dig your guys' sound, you been on the road long?

HK - Skweezy Jibbs - Phat Black Women: Again, I'm almost never going to vote for a joke song.

Sweden - Duocore - Endorphins: It's made for DANCING, not LISTENING.

Azerbaijan - Faith No More - Falling to Pieces: It emphasizes all the stuff I don't like about Epic and minimizes the stuff I do like, like the heaviness/punchiness.

USA - Yuki - Sakamichi no Melody: At least the percussion's kind of cool?

Hungary - Feint - Take it In: I thought this was Feist and then it was Feint instead and I was disappointed.

Slovenia - Epica - Sancta Terra: Chugga chugga chug.

Serbia - TR Kelley - The Sewing Machine Song: This song was exactly as advertised.

Australia - Black Kids - Long Title: But now I am old and grumpy and I have no patience for such songs.

Seychelles - Rhyme Asylum - Lost: Track's OK, beat's OK, lyrics are OK, rapping's OK.

Nicaragua - I Monster - Lust for a Vampyr: Ho hum, a song with music and singing.

Chad - Glitch Mob - Memory Back: Ugh.

Lithuania - The Amazons - Junk Food Fever: It's a little generic or whatever but I like the way they handled the rhythm, I feel like between the different parts of the song the rhythm changes just work really well.

Bhutan - Kasra V, K Flay - Justify You: It's OK, but not as OK as the other OK songs in this contest.

So, this was okay? I guess? It was really difficult to find 10 songs to give points to.

top tier

--
mid tier

Comoros (Boyfriend)
- eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyA!
Taiwan (KC Accidental)
- I liked it less than I thought I was going to like it from the beginning, but I liked the beginning a lot. So there, mid tier.
CAR (Steel and Glass)
- I had originally put this song in the fine tier, because I personally find the main chord progression creates a very overdone sound (it sounds very similar to i - iii - IV - vi). I know that's a very weird way to evaluate songs but it does seriously affect how I enjoy a song, but the rest of it is very musically diverse in an enjoyable way.
Slovenia (Sancta Terra)
- It's not super super engaging or interesting but it sounds very catchy, I liked it.

--
fine tier

Japan (Harrisburg)
- You know, not bad.
Libya (Shakey Jake)
- This is a top tier song that plays too similarly throughout the whole thing and so loses its luster
Fiji (Kagen no Tsuki)
- It works better as an instrumental, in my opinion.
Bhutan (Justify You)
- cool
Australia (I'm not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you)
- I have less words for this than the title length
Chad (I need my memory back)
- Okay, hear me out-- the way the instrumentals come in, like staggered, when she sings "Ooh I wanna dance like that" reminds me a lot of Africa by Toto. Weird comparison, but I really like it when instrumentals are created specifically like that. Aside from that, the rest of the song is... well, bearable, but that single moment bumps it up to "barely gets points level" in this playing field.

I know exactly what you're talking about. This one moment is my literal favorite moment on the whole album even if I don't think the rest of the song is incredible. Which is why I entered it over our demons even though that song might be better as a whole.

I'm not tool, but i'd assume it's a case by case basis like he did with Porter Robinson and Madeon for shelter.

I should really get this done.

After early eliminations:

The Federated States of Micronesia - Grayson Erhard - Bygones
Syria - The Scourge of Carpathia - Release the Hostage
USA - Yuki - Sakamichi no Melody
Uruguay - Son Little - Blue Magic (Waikiki)
Hungary - Feint - Take It In (feat. Koven)
Slovenia - Epica - Sancta Terra
Australia - Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
Canada - Emerson String Quartet - Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 8 (Mvt. 2)
Seychelles - Rhyme Asylum - Lost
Bhutan - Kasra V, K. Flay - Justify You

Getting rid of two to get my top ten, the following two songs are out:
Japan - Josh Ritter - Harrisburg
Sweden - Duocore - Endorphins

I'll order the final ten later.
"and now i am TURNED ON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!" - KainTepes

I'm regularly V/LA on the weekends. If this is the weekend and I've not said otherwise, please assume I'm on V/LA.

couldn't give it to anything but john lennon tbh, the more listens on the songs the more its superiority is solidified. i think steel and glass will win (it should anyway)

Hi I haven't entered Song Contest in ages but does anyone remember an instrumental song that sounded a bit twinkly and nice and was set to a video that was just a photo of some icey landscape? I've forgotten what its name was and searched extensively through contests I've entered but can't find it. Thank youuu

I remembered

so I'm revealing my submission because I don't want anyone to have any doubts:

that is not a drum machine

Iced Earth - Wolf

I had the hardest fucking time at first deciding which song of theirs to submit (and actually submitted a different one last contest, which got cut, so had the opportunity to re-pick, which I am happy about), but then realized this was the one to submit

totally appropriate submission due to the site

I hope you enjoy

Back from vacation!
In post 157, TheWayItEnds wrote:hey tool ive been meaning to ask which artist remixes get attributed to

I'd call a remix a type of cover, and the rules for covers are:
In post 0, Song Contest wrote:-You can enter a different version of a song entered before, such as a cover (or the original if the cover was entered first). For example, Johnny Cash's "Hurt" has already been entered, but you can still enter Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt".
Basically, a cover is the work of the performing artist, not the person who originally created the song. Any time a new person performs a song, it is considered a different entry under these rules...subject to reasonable restriction of course.

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy this contest so much. A lot of it is music not something I listen to often. But the top three are something I enjoy listening to from time to time.
