not like he has great taste anyways
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

India - I thought I understood this song, but it turned out that I didn't.

Yemen - I understand this song and I do not like it.

Spain - I thought this was pretty interesting for the first 30ish seconds, which is pretty much what one looks for out of an 8 and a half minute song, I assume.

South Korea - Sometimes okay, but overall no.

Burkina Faso - I liked the part where...wait no, that was when the song
wasn't
playing.

Slovenia - This lost me at the intro and then I hid and it never found me.

North Korea - I like the vocals. Mixed feelings on everything else about this song.

Afghanistahn - I don't even know what they were trying to do.

Bolivia - This is horribly boring.

Iceland - Some parts are half-decent and none of those parts are the parts with the vocals.

Norway - ?

Australia - Terminally boring.

Vietnam - No.

Taiwan - Pretty chill. Not great but basically a superstar by the standards of this contest so far.

Fiji - 8/10 displays of strength. 4/10 song

Azerbaijan - Sounds like it's from the 60s. I wish it would have stayed there.

Fiji – A cover of a movie soundtrack song is basically the last thing I ever want to listen to in a song contest but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one, I guess. But yeah no there is nothing here that appeals to me. It seems like the point of this isn’t the music, it’s the stage show which, spoilers, I did not watch. Musically it’s suuuuper repetitive and boring even aside from that stylistically it does nothing for me, it’s not something I’d care to listen to even if it was half the length it is. No thanks. (BAD)

Afghanistan – Ahh good hip-hop for me to dislike. And Purity Ring is here too? They have a song or two I like. Their chorus here isn’t even particularly good though, it’s a darker song than most of the stuff I’ve heard from them. And yeah as ever rapping still does nothing for me. I have nothing else to say, this bores the hell out of me. (BAD)

Democratic Republic of the Congo – Musically this started out okay, not really my thing but decent enough? But wow the vocals just ruin this entirely. It’s absolutely impossible for me to treat this as anything other than parody with the vocals like this. Also rather boring and basic. Geez, this contest sucks so far. (BAD)

Hong Kong – Well this is guaranteed to at least be listenable. The synth intro feels a bit out of place when the song kicks in for real. Yeah this is definitely listenable but it’s barely anything else. Sounds just like early 2000’s alternative metal/post-grunge just with a slightly better singer. And that’s about it. It’s a very nothing kind of song. So better than the rest so far, but still kind of forgettable. (AVERAGE)

Iceland – This album and this song in particular kind of caught me by surprise earlier this year, took me a while to get into it but when I did I loved the hell out of it. Though this is probably the tamest song on the album. And still my favorite. That ending especially, hell yeah. Anyways nobody will actually like this but I sent it and that matters.

Azerbaijan – Ahh good, indie rock with no personality whatsoever. Like yeah again this sounds alright enough? The vocal harmonies are okay too. The instrumentation is really generic and really basic too, and the song’s also super short and has no time to really leave any sort of impact. Almost inclined to call it mediocre but there’s nothing really unpleasant about it so ehh. Still won’t get points unless this contest is reeeally bad (which it is looking to be so far) (AVERAGE)

Guinea-Bissau – Sounds somewhere between Sia and Ellie Goulding, but with much more minimalistic production than either of them tend to stick to. She’s a decent enough singer and the song has a decent enough subdued groove to it but the production is kind of letting her down, there’s just too little of it. Oh okay, so it kicks in a bit at the halfway point, that’s fine then. Yeah, okay, this is pretty decent. Not outstanding, but solid. (DECENT)

Bolivia – I dunno, the instrumentation is kind of weak and minimal but the interplay of the vocals and both of them being pretty decent singers makes this work well enough regardless. Not spectacularly, but, you know, I enjoyed it at the very least. (DECENT)

Vietnam – Oh no, K-pop. Oh no, K-rap actually. Haha that spells krap what a funny. Yeah I dunno nothing about this does much for me. It’s just a bouncy pop song with some rapping. Aside from being Korean there’s not really anything that special about it. I guess, the girl is a pretty decent singer and gets a lot more of the song than the guy, so. Ehh. (AVERAGE)

so far this is not shaping up to be a good contest

In defense of my song (but not necessarily of my entry because i cant expect ppl to know korean)
If you understood what he was saying i think youd be able to fully appreciate his off beat emphasis and unconventional flow
He is well known for that
I vaguely remember a video where people tried to rap along to a song he was in and none of them managed it
did another ms user do something lovely? recognize their achievements here!

South Korea – The moment the vocals kick in I basically already know what to expect here. Though on the chorus she’s actually kind of decent until the down-pitched vocals come in like eww gross. Musically this is just generic pop trap EDM whatever nonsense that has absolutely no appeal to me. Doesn’t sound awful necessarily but there’s really barely anything here. (MEDIOCRE)

Republic of Kugelmugel – For one it’s hip-hop which is already a strike against it for me. For three wow I really do not like his voice at all. And the production is almost nothing besides really minimal percussion too. Yeah sorry this is a total waste of my time and I’m pulling the plug early. (DID NOT FINISH)

Spain – I could swear someone entered Tortoise before but I can’t find it. Anyways so far this is super boring. It’s downbeat but not atmospheric in any meaningful way and it’s also mostly driven by percussion. And not particularly good-sounding percussion either. Yeah this is just too boring to finish, not even bad and if I felt my time was less valuable I’d probably finish listening to it but no, no thanks. (DID NOT finish)

Taiwan – First comment is that I really do not like the vocals here at all. And that thought persists throughout the entire song, I just do not like this wailing, off-kilter style at all. Musically it’s okay but not that gripping in any way and with how unpleasant the vocals are I would never willingly choose to listen to this again. (BAD)

Australia – Starting out with a very 80’s synth tone is not winning me over. This at least has decent groove to it though, and sounds pretty fine aside from that synth tone, the guitar tone is actually pretty great especially. Not a huge fan of the vocals but they don’t feel out of place at least. Yeah for this contest’s standards this is at least fairly passable. (DECENT)

Slovenia – Oh good, Van Canto again. A cappella is never my favorite thing because I just think the human voice isn’t as good as some kinds of sounds as actual instruments. Oh and this music video is incredibly intrusive. Awkward guitar tuning intro? Random cutaway to Paranoid and to some other song I don’t recognize that just completely destroys the flow of the song. I think the only actual instruments here are the drums (obviously) and I think an actual bass is there sometimes but I’m not 100% sure? Like this would be a solid power metal song with real instruments and it’s still okay without them but the random cutaways hurt this a lot. Apparently this is only half as long a song on the actual album too, which, yeah, you can tell. (AVERAGE)

Albania – Yeah once this took a turn for the folky my interest dropped off. Very little folk music does much of anything for me and while this at least has its moments the sound in general is pretty offputting and lacking any emotional connection as much as they’re trying. It’s not really unpleasant in general though so ehh. I’ll take what I get this contest. (AVERAGE)

Chad – Apparently this is an electronic remix of some metalcore song, but actually not even a song, an interlude track. Why would you remix the interlude track. The worst part is that a remix of an interlude is maybe the best song in this set so far though. The synths don’t have the greatest tone but they give this atmosphere & the drums provide a solid slow groove. The vocals aren’t amazing either but they sound fine enough and mix in with the vibe of the song well. So yeah it’s okay. (DECENT)

Kosovo – Starts out decently enough with a jazzy instrumental but this was pretty obviously going to be a hip-hop song from the cover image. Yeah this is a bit too repetitive to do much for me but I could at least sit through all of it thanks to the production so that has to count for something? (MEDIOCRE)

Latvia – I have no clue what kind of accent the singer has but it feels slightly off, just in general. Somewhere between “mid 2000’s indie rock” and “English pop”. I think musically this is okay though maybe a touch repetitive, that one synth line kind of wears out its welcome fast. But on the whole yeah it’s an okay song? Kinda fun sounding. Not hugely impressed though. Also there’s another chorus right where it feels like it should be ending. Okay. (DECENT)

Yemen – Nice job with anonymity, tool. Uhh anyways this is very clearly some kind of emo rock. The singer sounds… very unhinged and very offkey very often, it’s not something I’m ever that keen towards unless there’s some intense emotion being conveyed which the tone of this song isn’t really selling me on. The guitar lines are all quite bright and twinkly and it all sounds fine enough but there’s a throughline missing that would make it compelling for me. But it’s okay regardless. (DECENT)

Burkina Faso – Ahh, another one of these, huh? Though this one at least has a distinctly latin feel to it so I can at least recognize the style they’re going for here. And it kind of taps into a kind of carefree, relaxed vibe, but. Honestly it sounds only a step about elevator music, she’s an okay singer and the horns add a bit of personality. But mostly it’s just… pleasant but kind of dull. (AVERAGE)

Norway – I was admittedly expecting something a bit more power metal-y but the intro of this is pretty interesting. Even when the metal kicks in the riffing isn’t really that power metal, even though the vocals certainly are. This isn’t hugely my thing and even with what it is it doesn’t really stand out too much but, it’s alright. Will almost certainly get high points in this contest. (DECENT)

Ecuador – Based on just the intro alone I feel this is a song I am intimately familiar with, despite being very certain I’ve never heard this specific song in my life. Because all these indie folk acts sound so damn similar to one another. I do at least appreciate that it builds a decent atmosphere by the end. I can appreciate that bit of the song, but the rest is a bit too minimal and generic for me to get much from it. It’s not bad by any means though. (DECENT)

North Korea – Stylistically this isn’t quite up my alley but I definitely have to say it’s well-executed here, dynamic and builds to a solid level of intensity by the end, it’s something I can definitely feel. Don’t have a ton of other thoughts beyond “yea, I liked it) though. (DECENT)

India – A little ironic that the vocals here, while they sound nice enough, are also a bit robotic in tone. And I’m never a fan of the chopped up vocal bits that make up a lot of the song. There’s really not much musically here that appears to me, it’s either kind of obnoxious or just pleasant but really generic. (AVERAGE)

Montenegro – Oh man, yeah, really do not like the singer at all. Oh god especially the chorus, he sounds awful. Just way off key and the tone of his voice doesn’t appeal to me either. Musically it’s okay enough, I dig the bass grooves and it’s an alright, bouncy rock tune. Synth tone I’m also not a fan of, it’s like a ballpark organ which always just sounds cheesy and cheap if you ask me. Yeah I can very definitely say I’m not really a fan of this in general. Not awful but not very good. (MEDIOCRE)

well, this group was a bit better, but nothing here i'm remotely interested in checking out further
in other news, i received the new hirsch effekt album in the mail yesterday & it's great so that's a relief

Guess I should put these in some kind of order/ relisten sometime in the new 3 days, cuz I usually order as I go and somehow did not this time. so um these sem-vague and short comments from last week's listening:

Albania - almost kinda cool sounding
India - that's not bad, but now it is, now it's good again
Yemen - decentish, vocals MEHish
Spain - kinda bored, like he underlying beat kinda, suddenly elevator music
South Korea - better w/o vocals, eh maybe EHH
Burkina faso - no
Slovenia - I think I like this, maybe just slightly
North Korea - There is a plane outside the window louder than the song. Not bad though, went from not liking vocals -> ok vocals
Afghanistan - no.
Bolivia - dont like vocals at all
Iceland - this is ok it gets better when it gets louder
Norway - this is also ok.
Australia - boredish
Vietnam - err no.
Taiwan - this song does not tilt. Ok I like that part of the music just not the vocals
Fiji - I made a weird face watching/listening to this
Azerbaijan - this is tolerable
Hong Kong: = ) pretty good
Montenegro - no
Dem Rep. Congo -Sure, eh not sure
Kugelmugel - there is a cat at least
Chad - mixed feelings about the voacls - meh. Meh
Guinea-Bissau - don't like vocals or parka
Ecuador - Yawn
Kosovo - eh

didn't really actually "enjoy" listening to anything but Hong Kong's song, is what I remember thinking after the contest, but who knows I could change my mind on relisten ( could like a couple more or literally hate everything)

Are my top 12.
