I imagine that it's related. You kinda have to be an massive egotist with no sense of empathy to believe that you deserve to be in a position of leadership of an entire country to begin with.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

I disagree Sudo_Nym, some leaders can have empathy.

I hope that something can be resolved soon and with minimal loss of lie.

Name one. Even Jimmy Carter was responsible for killing people with his decisions; if President Peanut can't keep his hands clean, how can anyone?

Basically everybody who has ever lead a nation had a moment where they looked at the idea of ruling, making decisions on behalf of millions of people you've never met, who all have different problems, feelings, thoughts, and opinions; some of whom will benefit and some of whom will suffer as a result of every word they say during their reign, and then said "Hell yeah, I could knock that shit out of the park." Anybody who can learn what the process of ruling an entire nation, making decisions on behalf of people that will get some percentage of those people killed without their input, and still believe themselves entitled to the job is some degree of narcissistic sociopath.

Actually North Korea is acting quite rationally in accordance with its own national interests.

First of all, historically nations hostile to US interests that have abandoned their nuclear programs (Gaddafi's Libya and Saddam's Iraq) have ultimately ended up being victims of regime change by the US down the road.

Secondly, nuclear weapons render your nation immune to being unconditionally beaten. You can still suffer defeats, but enemy tanks will never roll down the boulevards of your capital city unless those enemy tanks have survived a nuclear exchange. You can never be
beaten
, only utterly destroyed. As a result, this makes any seemingly "insane" dictator start acting sane in record time. When a misstep can result in your utter annihilation, you have to measure your actions very carefully. However, this simultaneously is what makes it so dangerous that
North Korea
in particular possesses these weapons - if they believe that their state is in danger of imminent economic collapse and they do not manage to extort aid from the international community, they
will
attack South Korea in a last-ditch effort at survival.

Thirdly, the North Koreans have resoundingly come out on top in this particular exchange. They backed up their words while Trump did not - Trump countered their sabre-rattling by threatening "fire and fury" in response to
"continued threats"
. North Korea did, in fact, continue their threats, and proved that their possession of missiles that can at least reach Japan was not a bluff. Did Trump respond with "fire and fury"? No. So now Trump looks weak and ineffectual while North Korea looks stronger and more dangerous than before.

This whole episode has been pretty embarrassing for him.

Sadly agree with Wraith. North Korea is operating from the following positions:

- The world already hates them the maximum possible amount. They can't be viewed any worse
- They have such a tight lock on information their own people are unaffected by anything they do.

In this case the only thing they can't be viewed as is harmless. They're playing nuclear brinksmanship sloppily, but it's still a game where we all know the edge is something we can't walk over. What they need to do is be so fucking dangerous everyone believes they will fire the nukes if they're invaded (whether or not they actually would is irrelevant - once the nukes are fired everyone is dead). So we're sold, they will fire nukes if we invade. They win the brinksmanship, we won't invade.

Trump was extra thick so they made it really, really, really clear.

Put it this way: there's not going to be a war in North Korea. There's no economic gain to be made, and the costs would be huge. There's no option of skirmishing, this would be for all the marbles. To win, and occupy it, it's going to be worse than Vietnam, because you damn well know China is going to support a resistance to keep a US nation away from it's border, and the terrain is apparently appalling. This in a time where people still have Iraq and Afghanistan fresh in mind, you can't sell that to congress. You can't preemptively carpet nuke it either, which I'm sure some would love to consider, there's no way you can do that right in front of the Chinese eyes, have them deal with the fallout, etc. That's as close as committing to WW3 as you'll get without nuking Beijing. And you lose one ally for sure in the region, because in the end South Korea wants to unite, not have it's brother perish.

North Korea has played this game for 2 generations now, successfully. The same dynasty stays in power, they get placated with international help. It's nuclear blackmail, but paying is a lot cheaper than going to war for it. It's not even comparable, even ignoring the nuclear war option. I'd be very surprised if the world wouldn't pay up again. So pushing the issue like the US has done under Trump, who's it for? Is it to have a slightly better position on the negotiation table vs North Korea who's had the world pocketed for decades now, or is it vs China to imply that the US could be crazy too and it'd be a lot better for everybody involved if they could rein in North Korea a little in the near future?

yeah, they will never use it though. It is literally suicidal for them to do such. It is in contradiction with the stated aim of the administration to stay in power to do an act which would inevitably result in them not being in power.

But is Kim such a spiteful child he'd be willing to kill millions or billions if it looked like he could lose power?

I bet he's convinced you he is. And... yeah, he probably is.

Can't open link so not sure if right article, but here's some perspective as to what makes Trumps antagonistic game towards NK all the more stupid and reckless.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nort ... SKCN1BJ0IN

Now if this is some sort of game to create all this tension to manufacture an excuse to attack China economically, then it'd be quite a clever move but based on what we've seen of his presidency thus far, that's way too much credit to give. More likely he is a orange baby looking to get nuked in the face.

Another point is that thru all this he gets to project his all so desired strongman image while the ones who are truly nervous about this whole ordeal are the Asian countries. As things currently stand, the possibilities of some sort of ploy for the US to move and take out NK militarily or politically are minute (no way China or Russia allows US or any of its allies to move to control NK)
