Funny someone entered Alt-J, because just yesterday I was thinking to myself I'd love to like or even know them, so I could justify buying a ticket to their concert. Because Marika Hackman is the supporting act and I'd love to see her live.

Yeah I think Breezeblocks was the one I heard more on the radio at the time. Really like that one, though I don't think I ever got around to listening to all the non-singles on the album...that or I listened to them and wasn't impressed. Can't remember.

Also, I'm starting to think this whole thing where we aren't hitting 26 entries every contest is a trend and not just a fluke.

Slovenia (Oystein Baadsvik) - I'm sure this is probably technically impressive or something but I'll be honest, I didn't make it more than halfway before wanting to gouge my own ears out. Yes, this makes me basic and dumb. (D)

Iceland (GUNSHIP) - I do dig the 80s synth resurgence going on right now, but to me it felt like a ton of other bands did this better. I'm still a sucker for it, though. (B)

United Kingdom (Volbeat) - This just isn't really my thing. It feels like it has been done to death. And even when it was done originally and better, it wasn't my thing, so this certainly won't be. (D)

USA (Icarus the Owl) – I really dislike the whiny pop-punk/post-hardcore aesthetic, and it takes a LOT of style and talent to pull it off. Not entirely sure this is the group to do it. (C-)

Egypt (Jacob Collier) – This isn’t egregious/obnoxious a capella like Pentatonix, and it has some cool stuff going on in the background. But it’s still a capella. (C)

Guatemala (Desireless) – Here we go, more 80s! Except this one is actually 80s. And just as good now as it was then. (B)

Central African Republic (The Jam) – Basically, they’re doing the whole London punk revival thing? I can dig it well enough. This genre has always been sorta something I appreciate from a far though, like a museum piece or something. Not sure I would jam out to this (C)

Iraq (Forgive Durden) – Whoa. What is this? It honestly kind of reminds me of a slightly more downtempo Polyphonic Spree. I’m now doing some reading. Interesting. I can see the influence of a lot of these bands, and I’m not necessarily a huge fan of them. But this is p good. (B+)

Burkina Faso (Wy) – Ah, dream pop/shoegaze. I mean, I dunno. Lana Del Rey did this better. So did Mazzy Star. So did Beach House. This is just…kinda boring tbh? (C-)

Hong Kong (Skillet) – Man if this doesn’t bring me way the fuck back. This type of emo bullshit hasn’t aged well, huh? (D)

Wales (Alex the Astronaut) – Giving me a Rilo Kiley sort of vibe. The lyrical content is pretty powerful – if a bit too on the nose. I dig the vibe, I just wish it was a little subtler and went somewhere interesting. Building up to this kinda anti-climax string section is the opposite of subtle. I wanted to love this, instead I just appreciate it and think it’s cute. Maybe that’s enough. (B-)

Bhutan (Wednesday Campanella) – Okay so…hm. So much of my enjoyment of music comes from lyrics and making a connection with them while listening. So, this being in a language I don’t understand hurts it, unfortunately. That being said, I really do like the style of this song and the production is fucking great. This is getting points. (B)

South Korea (Loverboy) – I can’t believe you’ve done this. More 80s! I think this one has aged slightly worse than Guatemala. Also, this song was forever ruined by the motion picture “Pixels”. (C)

Zimbabwe (Don McCloskey) – I don’t hate it! I don’t love it, either. It’s like a watered-down version of Cake? That’s what I’m getting anyway. And Cake already wasn’t at the very top of my list. (C)

India (Skrat) – Oh. Yeah. This was never gonna agree with me. (D)

Italy (Lorde) – Queen. (A+)

Latvia (Nomico) – Oh, some wack ass anime shit? Or Touhou or something? This is grating as fuck. (D)

Greece (Emilie Simon) – A E S T H E T I C. This is fuckin’ primo. Then I listened to the lyrics and got really sad. (A-)

China (alt-J) – Oh FUCK I forgot alt-J was a thing. And honestly his voice drives me insane but the music is so great that I don’t really care. This is quality shit. (A-)

Macau (The Japanese House) – This X-Files sounding shit better get—what the fuck, why can I hear his drymouth smacking his lips together? Also his flow is actually mediocre at best…WAIT THAT WAS A FUCKING ADVERTISEMENT? I JUST LISTENED TO AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR 3 MINUTES. Okay, well now I’m to the actual song. This is okay. I hate the shoegaze downtempo craze for pop/indie right now. It’s sorta boring but I can’t deny that it’s quality. (B-)
