Have we ever considered shortening the entry deadlines because
I dunno, 18 days is a bit excessive
Unless there's like, a majority of entries being sent between when the thread dies after initial posting and a day or two before deadline it just seems like wasted time to meShowEver wanted a playlist full of a lot of music I really dig? Here you go.

Tool: Well, I had that period shortly after I took over moderating where I tried compressed deadlines for both entries and voting. I never ran statistical analysis on it exactly but just looking at how things turned out it seemed fairly clear to me that shortening the entry period led to fewer entries per contest. In post 28, Parama wrote:Have we ever considered shortening the entry deadlines because

I do want to note that this particular contest has a longer entry deadline because the timeline for the last contest got screwed up with both mods traveling. And for the most part I'd rather have a longer entry period than a shorter one if a previous contest has messed up the timeline.
I'll follow this post with some numbers on when people typically submit their entries.
All this said, one could argue that it's worth it to have shorter contests with fewer entries per contest if you end up with a higher total number of entries over the long run. If we wanted to move in that direction the rules would likely need a bit of rewriting (specifically, the number of entries allowed per contest and possibly the number of contests before an artist becomes eligible again).- Song Contest

So this is kind of a crude analysis of when people submit their entries, based on SC110-114 (not including BOTB6). I only included entries that made it into the contests, so that does exclude cuts but there was only one contest (SC110) in the sample when cuts happened anyway.
Data is formatted like this:
DAYS SINCE CONTEST OPENED -- DAYS UNTIL DEADLINE -- NUMBER OF ENTRIES -- PERCENT OF FINAL ENTRY COUNT ENTERED ON THAT DAY
So I will post the top three days for entries from each contest, labeled by how many days it had been since the contest opened and how many days it was until deadline. If the first number is 0, that means the first day the contest was open for entries. If the second number is zero, that means the last day the contest was open for entries.
SC110
FIRST: 0 -- 12 -- 9 -- 34.62%
SECOND: 6 -- 6 -- 4 -- 15.38%
THIRD (TIE): 3 -- 9 -- 2 -- 7.69%
9 -- 3 -- 2 -- 7.69%
11 -- 1 -- 2 -- 7.69%
12 -- 0 -- 2 -- 7.69%
SC111
FIRST: 0 -- 12 -- 10 -- 52.63%
SECOND: 12 -- 0 -- 3 -- 15.79%
THIRD: All other days with entries were tied, with one entry apiece (5.26% for each individual entry)
SC112
FIRST: 16 -- 0 -- 5 -- 25%
SECOND: 0 -- 16 -- 4 -- 20%
THIRD: 2 -- 14 -- 3 -- 15%
SC113
FIRST (TIE): 12 -- 0 -- 3 -- 13.64%
0 -- 12 -- 3 -- 13.64%
THIRD (TIE): 3 -- 9 -- 2 -- 9.09%
8 -- 4 -- 2 -- 9.09%
10 -- 2 -- 2 -- 9.09%
SC114
FIRST: 15 -- 0 -- 8 -- 40%
SECOND: 0 -- 15 -- 4 -- 20%
THIRD (TIE): 1 -- 14 -- 2 -- 10%
4 -- 11 -- 2 -- 10%
Overall conclusions:
-The day with the most entries was (almost) always the first or last day of the entry period.
-Often they had the same number of entries, or a very close number.
-The top two days for entriesusuallysaw half or more of the total number of entries that made into each contest, but not every single time.
It might be worth comparing this to the contests I did with the compressed timelines, but I'm not exactly sure how useful that would be...- Plotinus

Question for the people who usually submit on the last day: do you usually use most of the given time making your selection or do you usually forget about it and pick something out at the last minute when you're reminded that the contest exists (by the thread being bumped or something), or something else? The failure mode of clever is asshole.

sometimes i spend it deciding between a couple songs. sometimes i decide last minute with no thought beforehand. As the last rays of sunlight fade, one killer chases another through the tangled madness of the city.
A flash of steel announces the presence of his quarry.

90% of the time i have a song ready from the start
When I don't I ignore this until the last day & then remember I need to submit and do
I have never outright forgotten to submit though & I've been entering these since song contest 8 soShowEver wanted a playlist full of a lot of music I really dig? Here you go.

99% of the time I see the thread get bumped with a deadline reminder and go, "oh I should pick something". Exactly one time ever did I spend that time actively listening to an act's back catalog to see what song I think people would enjoy mostIn post 32, Plotinus wrote:Question for the people who usually submit on the last day: do you usually use most of the given time making your selection or do you usually forget about it and pick something out at the last minute when you're reminded that the contest exists (by the thread being bumped or something), or something else?Sometimes a sandwich is just a sandwich.- toolenduso

Jurgen and I are working on some analysis of how things went before, during and after the period where I was running contests with shorter entry and voting deadlines to see how it affected behavior. It's actually pretty good from a study design standpoint because we have a test period sandwiched between two baseline periods, allowing us to more confidently say that the changes in the test period were due to the variables we're trying to test and not something else. Should hopefully be able to post results in a couple days."Half of the game is figuring out who the scum is. I should ego this.
Also I doubt most submissions are in the last few days and this feels dragged out each time.Half meme, Half real, All Aristophanes ;)- JingleAri has appeared way too competent for me to even pretend to know what they're thinking

I submitted on the first or second day a song I was really stuck on at the time and enjoying and I don't want to change my entry because I doubt most people will have heard my song and I think it's really cool though I'll probably right side with it anyway...but now I'm stuck on this other song that is just absolutely perfect and I don't want to listen to anything else and it's the epitome of everything I've been feeling lately and it's so great...but I'll probably have completely moved on from it by the time song contest 116 rolls around.Last edited by Plotinus on Thu Feb 22, 2018 9:29 pm, edited 1 time in total. The failure mode of clever is asshole.
