Lol not one reference to The Cold Equations in the entire article I just read about this movie. The story seems to be an obvious flesh out of that story by Tom Godwin.

My understanding is they invite God to concentrate his vengeance (erstwhile powering the plague) into their scourges, beat themselves into near unconsciousness, then the locals dab their blood up on rags as relics, and all of this just spreads the plague faster. It's the most over the top.
