Tommy Lee is the former Motley Crue drummer.

Here's a list of all the countries in Asia with comment from the generals:
  • Afghanistan - Middle East
  • Armenia - Middle East, Former USSR
  • Azerbaijan - Middle East, Former USSR
  • Bahrain - Middle East
  • Bangladesh - No 'L'
  • Bhutan - No 'L'
  • British Indian Ocean Terr.
  • Brunei
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Cambodia - No
  • China - No
  • Cyprus - Middle East
  • East Timor
  • India - No
  • Indonesia - No 'L'
  • Iran - Middle East
  • Iraq - Middle East
  • Israel - Middle East
  • Japan - No
  • Jordan - Middle East
  • Kazakhstan - Former USSR
  • Kuwait - Middle East
  • Kyrgyzstan - Middle East, Former USSR
  • Laos - No 'L'
  • Lebanon - Middle East
  • Malaysia - No
  • Maldives
  • Mongolia - No 'L'
  • Nepal - No
  • North Korea - No
  • Oman - Middle East
  • Pakistan - Middle East
  • Philippines - No
  • Russian Fed. - Former USSR
  • Qatar - Middle East
  • Saudi Arabia - Middle East
  • Singapore
  • Syria - Middle East
  • South Korea - No
  • Sri Lanka
  • Taiwan - No
  • Tajikistan - Middle East, Former USSR
  • Thailand - No 'L'
  • Turkey - Middle East
  • Turkmenistan - Middle East, Former USSR
  • U.A.E. - Middle East
  • Uzbekistan - Middle East, Former USSR
  • Vietnam - No
  • Yemen - Middle East
I didn't check Talitha's search for 'L's among the names of Government ministers. But if she's right, that leaves us with the following countries:
  • British Indian Ocean Terr.
  • Brunei
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • East Timor
  • Maldives
  • Singapore
  • Sri Lanka
Anyone with ideas for a general? I think Singapore is our best shot, but I don't know if we can take the risk.

Not sure if you are cracking a joke or not, but just in case: Stumpers are the questions you ask about people with L last names, Generals are the yes or no questions you get to ask if you get a Stumper right.

Or Rite

Found this webpage with all the Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members:
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/chiefs/
But that only helps if he's a current government minister. It sounds like he is current, but I would expect someone over 80 to be retired!
So I'm kinda stumped.

Seeing as we only have 2 left, I would tend to list all these countries in a general. At least then if the answer is yes, we'll know we're on the right track. If the answer's no, we'll know we have to check our assumptions...
and we might as well give up

Using Talitha's link, I checked all the active ministers of the remaining countries. There were only four countries that had (a) minister(s) who's name start(s) with an 'L'. Burma has 1 minister, East Timor has 1 too, Singapore has 8 of them and Sri Lanka 2. Of all of these found ministers, there's only one who's not under the age of eighty. But this is a problem, because he turned 80 today :). In fact, two of the ministers of Singapore have their birthday today:

Senior Minister - Lee, Kuan Yew (16 september '23)
Min. of Information, Communications, & the Arts (Acting) - Lim, David Tik En (16 september '55)

Happy Birthday to the both of them :).

Anyway, it seems that there are a lot of minister names starting with an 'L's in Singapore, so I think I'll take the risk:

Nice work. That's weird about the Singaporean leaders with L's in their first name that have the same birthday.

It's gotta be this Lee Kuan Yew guy right?

Stumper: DP, are you a Senior Minister of Singapore whose name would fit in the blanks Kuan Yew _ee?

After googling some time, I might have an idea on who we're looking for. There were like 35 people whose name start with an 'L' and are/were in Singapore's cabinet, but I managed to reduce the list quite a bit. So, one general left and one hunch ... let's hope.

If he had his 80th birthday just yesterday, he can't be right (check #7 in DP's answer list).

I guess I was figuring that either DP made a mistake or was being imprecise. (eg, Maybe he only knew the year of birth was 1923, not the month/day)

I just didn't think it likely that there would be any other people of that age in the government. This Lee Kuan Yew is only there (it seems to me) because he was the Prime Minister for 30 or so years, and after he stepped down was given a sort of honorary position.

Yes, I am Lee Kwan Yew, Senior Minister of Singapore. Well done.

I googled for the birthday, but could only find the year of birth in the sites I looked at.

And BTW - it's an open secret that he is still running the show in Singapore.

Well done, people!

I figured DP wouldn't assume that the man already had his birthday should he only know the year of birth. So I searched on for former ministers and came up with one other octogenarian man: Lim Kim San.

Thanks for the game, DP. It's really funny that we found the man on his birthday. That's a first-timer, I'm sure :).
