Supremacy - Abandoned

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Jun 19, 2014 4:06 pm

Post by Magua »

Ever have dreams of running your own totalitarian despotic regime in a bid to take over the entire world? Liked the idea of marching your armies across the globe like in Risk, but wishing that you could also roll around on a mattress of billion dollar bills[1]? Longed to play a game where if things go poorly you could launch a retributive nuclear strike against your enemies?

Supremacy is the game for you!

[1] This is a game from the 80s, when a billion dollars was a lot of money.

Players

1.
SleepyKrew (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)

2.
DiplomatDC (People’s Republic of China)

3.
Aronis (United States of America)

4.
RedPanda (League of European Nations)
(replacing YurikoJasmine)

5.
PiggyGal15 (Confederacy of South America)

6.
inspiratieloos (Federation of African States)
(replacing Blackberry)

Rules - This is a more of a simplification than transcription, and includes the house rules that I'm using. Yeah, my formatting is super dry and bland. I know.

FORUM SPECIFIC RULES:
  • Private communication is allowed between all players at any time. Because I'm a nosy Nancy, I'd like to be included, but that's purely optional.
  • Hidden information: The amount of money each player has is hidden. If there is a transfer of money between two players, that will be noted in the thread, but the amount transferred will not. The identity of face down resource cards is hidden, but the number of face down cards is not. All other information is public.
  • Diplomacy: Note that money may only be transferred in stages 3, 6, and 7, resources may only be transferred in stages 3 and 7, and armies/navies/nukes/L-Stars/territories can only be transfer in stage 6. For any transfer, I need both participants to signify agreement to terms (quoting and adding "Agreed" or similar is fine). Transfers can be negotiated and agreed to out-of-thread, but will be noted in-thread (except for any amount of money transferred, which will be hidden).
  • Activity requirement: I'll wait for you for 48 hours, and then prod or move on at my discretion. If this happens repeatedly, I'll replace you. Feel free to specify conditional orders ahead of time -- they make the game go faster.

Spoiler: 30 second guide to basic concepts and strategy
  • Like with any multiplayer game, the absolute positively best strategy is to make friends and not get attacked.
  • You receive money from holding territories, and from selling resources on the market. Holding territories is the slow, steady way of making money; selling resources is the more profitable but riskier method (riskier both because if you tap yourself out of resources you can't attack or defend effectively, and because you might not get to sell when the market's at its highest).
  • The market is game-able by design (though this has been houseruled to be only mildly ridiculous, instead of outright ludicrous. At it's most basic, without interference from the random element or other players, someone can sell resources in Stage 3, and then buy them back for a lesser amount in Stage 7, pocketing the difference. In a perfect theoretical world without other player's interference, someone with 12 of a resource that is priced at $1 billion a unit can make $8.8 billion by dumping it all.
  • At the start of the game, 12 territories on the board will be completely unguarded and free to take.
  • Russia starts with 6 home territories, the most of any superpower. This also means it receives the most money each turn. This is balanced by the fact that it is literally adjacent to China and Europe.
  • Each superpower has two companies for each resource type (6 in total); you'll start with 4 of these. Therefore, you'll know two cards you could prospect for right off the bat.
  • Controlling territories not only gets you revenue each turn, it also makes it easier for you to prospect for new resources, and harder for everyone else.
  • Researching nukes and L-Stars can be very expensive. After setup, the resource deck has 29 cards in it, 3 of which are nukes and 2 of which are L-Stars, so the number of cards required for 50% success is 10 and 15; at $200 million a card, that's $2 and $3 billion respectively, and you still need to pay for a nuke or L-Star after you succeed. It becomes easier to research nukes/L-Stars the more prospecting occurs, as it removes cards from the deck.
  • The resource cost of conventional warfare can add up quickly. The attacker is spending a set of resources for every roll of the dice, so make them count.
  • Control of light blue seas is critically important. Except for Indonesia, any non-superpower territory can be blockaded by holding 1 or 2 light blue seas. Remember that blockading is done by sea only -- even if a foreign territory is connected by land to the superpower, it can still be blockaded.
  • If you find yourself under siege, you've pretty much lost. Being surrounded is bad enough, but you're also cut off from buying and selling on the market, and from all your foreign territory companies, so your supply of resources is going to dry up.
  • Conversely, capturing an opponent's supply center is a huge benefit. A player with a captured supply center has the capacity to control the market from $1 million to $1 billion all on their own, and can literally spend twice as many resources on a conventional war as anyone else.
  • It is important to have a supply of all resources; all resources are required to build armies, build navies, and attack, and also helps in defense.
  • Grain is used to move armies.
  • Oil is used to move navies, and can also be used to expensively airlift armies.
  • Minerals are used to create nukes and L-Stars, and so are the most important late-game resource.

I'll post rules up later tonight.

In the meantime, a question for the
dictators
despots
glorious leaders: do you wish private communications amongst eachother, or should all communication have to be in the game thread?

It's a game that came out in the 80s and had its high point in the early 90s -- I would be highly surprised if anyone on the site had ever played before.

So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Setup:

You need to make the following choices, which need to be PM'ed to me:
  1. Money: You can start with $7 billion, or $2d6 billion. If you choose 2d6, feel free to roll the dice in the PM to me.
  2. Armies/navies: You have a total of 9 armies and/or navies to place. I have noted the territories / light blue seas you are allowed to place them in.
  3. Resources: You start with 3 Grain, 3 Oil, and 3 Mineral. You choose a total of 9 more resources of any combination to add to that.
Tips:
- It is highly suggested that you place at least one navy in every sea you have available to you (except maybe for Blackberry). Port access is denoted by the little white dots in the territory -- if an enemy takes over all the seas with port access to a foreign territory, they can deny you resources from that territory and keep you from building more armies/navies there. If an enemy takes over all the seas with port access to your superpower, you're kind of hosed (this is particularly true for SleepyKrew and DiplomatDC).
- Controlling territories gives you access to more money each turn, and potential resources. There are twelve empty, unguarded territories at this point.
- If multiple superpowers have access to a light blue sea, no one can build there without the other's permission. In this case, you need to have navies somewhere else and attack/move them in.
- Your resource cap is 12, and you'll receive the resources from your cards at the start of each turn, including the first. So if you're receiving 12 Oil a turn like PiggyGal, there's no reason to put any of your initial 9 resources on Oil.

- Note that private communication is allowed at any point. Because I'm nosy, I'd like to be included, but it's not mandatory.

- I'm happy to answer any questions you have either publicly in the thread, or privately via PM.

- Note the Pacific ocean spaces wrap around the left and right board edges.

Question, let's say I got Japan. Could I trade it for a different territory considering it's worthless to me?
