Coup (Game Over)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Mar 18, 2017 3:38 pm

Post by Equinox »

In a future where the government is run for profit, all but a privileged few live lives of poverty and desperation. Out of these oppressed masses are sown the seeds of a rebellion that throws the government into chaos. Many see hope for a brighter future for the first time in their lives. Others see opportunity for absolute power. To take command, you must destroy the influence of your rivals and drive them into exile. Only one can survive.

Rules

Basically, do not do anything that may be considered questionable, even if you do not consider it to be such; ask first if you're not sure. No private communication.

There is a deadline of
24 hours
for all actions, blocks, challenges, and counteractions. If no player wishes to challenge, players may post
Pass
to keep the game moving. If an action cannot be blocked or challenged, then play may resume as usual.

Setup

The object of the game is to eliminate the influence of all other players and be the last survivor.

Flow of the Game

Each player receives two character cards chosen at random and two coins. The cards in each player's hand represents who they influence at court. Each time a player loses an influence, that player must choose and reveal a card. Revealed cards no longer provide influence for the player. When a player has lost all influence, that player is exiled and out of the game.
In post 1, Save The Dragons wrote:On your turn you may take any action, and only one per turn. Any other player may doubt that action (if it requires a card to perform). If they do not doubt that action, you perform it, regardless of whether or not you have that card.

Example
: I have both Contessa cards. I say
Exchange
. No one doubts me, so I perform the exchange action
even though I do not actually have an Ambassador
.

If someone doubts you, you either show them the card as proof, or you say you cannot. If you show the card as proof, they lose one of their characters. If you cannot, you lose one of your characters. When a card is flipped/destroyed/assassinated, that card is face up for the rest of the game.

Example
: I have both Contessa cards. I say
Exchange
. Player A doubts me. I must flip over one of my cards since I do not have the Ambassador..
Example
: I have a Contessa card and an Ambassador card. I say
Exchange
. Player A doubts me. I show that I have the Ambassador and am allowed to Exchange. I return it to the Court and draw a new card, potentially receiving my Ambassador back. Then I exchange. Player A now flips over one of his cards, revealing a Captain.

Certain actions may also be blocked. If this is the case, then these blocks may also be doubted in the same manner as above.

Example
: I have an Assassin card. I say
Assassinate
Player A. No one doubts my Assassin. Player A says he blocks my Assassin with a Contessa. I doubt that he has it, Player A is just trying to cling onto his miserable life. He shows me his Contessa. I lose a card. Player A shuffles his Contessa back into the Court and then draws a card from the Court.

Example
: I have an Assassin card. I say
Assassinate
Player A. No one doubts my Assassin. Player A says he blocks my Assassin with a Contessa. I doubt that he has it. He does not have a Contessa. He loses a card (and in this case since he is assassinated and cannot block it, he will lose his other card as well!)
Spoiler: From the Rulebook
Each turn, a player chooses one action. A player may not pass. After the action, other players have the opportunity to challenge or counteract that action. If an action is not challenged or counteracted, then that action automatically succeeds. Challenges are resolved first before any action or counteraction is resolved.

General actions (i.e., Income, Foreign Aid, Coup) are always available. If a player chooses a character action (e.g., Assassinate), then the player must claim that the required character is one of the cards that the player is holding. Revealing the card is not necessary unless the player is challenged. If no challenge occurs, then the player's action automatically succeeds.

If a player begins a turn with 10 or more coins, then that player must launch a Coup.

Any action or counteraction using character influence can be challenged. Any other player can issue a challenge to a player regardless of whether or not the challenging player is involved in the action. Once play continues, challenges cannot be retroactively issued.

If a player is challenged, then that player must reveal the relevant character. If the player cannot or does not wish to prove it, then that player loses the challenge. If the player can prove it, then the challenger loses, and the player returns the card to the Court Deck, re-shuffles, and draws a replacement card at random. Whoever loses the challenge immediately loses an influence.

If an action is successfully challenged, then the action fails and any coins paid are returned.

Characters

Ambassador
- Exchange cards with Court Deck. Blocks stealing.
Assassin
- Pay three coins to assassinate another player.
Captain
- Steal two coins from another player. Blocks stealing.
Contessa
- Blocks assassination.
Duke
- Take three coins from Treasury. Blocks Foreign Aid.

Actions

General Actions
(always available)

Income
- Take one coin from the Treasury.
Foreign Aid
- Take two coins from the Treasury. Can be blocked by the Duke.
Coup
- Pay seven coins to the Treasury and launch a Coup against another player. That player immediately loses an influence. A Coup is always successful. If you start your turn with 10 or more coins, you are required to launch a Coup.

Character Actions
(if challenged, a player must show influence over the relevant character)

Tax
- Take three coins from the Treasury.
Assassinate
- Pay three coins to the Treasury and launch an assassination against another player. If successful, that player immediately loses an influence. Can be blocked by the Contessa.
Steal
- Take two coins from another player. If the player only has one coin, take only one. Can be blocked by the Ambassador or the Captain.
Exchange
- Exchange cards with the Court. First, take two random cards from the Court Deck. Choose which, if any, to exchange with the cards in your hand. Return two cards to the Court Deck.

Counteractions

Block Foreign Aid
- Any player claiming the Duke may counteract and block a player attempting to collect Foreign Aid. The player trying to gain Foreign Aid receives no coins that turn.
Block Assassination
- The player who is being assassinated may claim the Contessa and counteract to block the assassination. The assassination fails but the fee paid by the player for the Assassin remains spent.
Block Stealing
- The player from whom coins are being stolen may claim either the Ambassador or the Captain and counteract to block the steal. The player trying to steal receives no coins that turn.

  1. Save The Dragons
  2. McMenno
  3. Gammagooey
  4. Tatsuya Kaname
  5. Killthestory
  6. mallowgeno
Whichever number on which this die roll lands is the first player to start. Play then goes down the list. Good luck!

Quick question because I don't see it in the rules, how many of each role are there? I probably missed it.
