Battle of the Twelve Castles | Finished

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Jun 06, 2020 8:04 am

Post by Scigatt »

Taken(with modification) from FiveThirtyEight's Riddler column, here's the Battle of The Twelve Castles!

How it Works

You and other scummers wish to control 12 castles, their value ranging from 1 to 12. At the outset, you have 144 soldiers, each of which you may assign to attack a single castle. With this assignment locked in, your army battles against each other army '1v1' for control of the twelve castles. You gain full control of a castle when you assign more soldiers to attack it than your opponent. If you equal the number of soldiers your opponent sends to a castle, then that castle's value is split. Whoever controls the most the most value in the end wins the battle.

The overall ranking is determined by the win-loss record(2 points for a win, 1 for a draw). Tie-breakers are total wins and then head-to-head. Total value differential will not be used to break ties, but will be tracked and displayed at the end.

How To Play

-Fill out this form. Save what you entered in the 'Confirm Phrase' entry(It would also be a good idea to save castle your assignments as well.) Excess soldiers will be taken off the most valuable castles first, while unassigned soldiers will automatically attack Castle 1.

-PM me your Confirm Phrase.

Too Late! Results have been posted below!

Mod's Entry

I certainly wouldn't want to miss out on this, but to escape accusations of cheating, I have already put in my assignments. Here is my assignment in compact form hashed using the whirlpool function:

Do all the castles have similar points? Or are their points correlated with their number?

Ok! I will try to get to work on the code to come up with the best strategy
if
I have time.

Seems fun to code out a strategy.

Do pm me if you are going to set a deadline for this!

About that, you may want to re-check your assignments.

Hmm? I checked the original article you based it off from but nowhere in THIS one does it say you can't use zeros.
Or did I get the numbers wrong?...Or did I miss it?

I'm me, so who knows.

Thinking about putting up a deadline soon. Want a few more entries first.

Edit: I'm gonna put this right here

The entries are all in and now it's time to reveal the results, countdown style!

In the end, someone had to come in last place, but that doesn't mean we can't laugh at their silly strategy.
In 7th place, we have...

Iconeum!

RankScoreWTLValue Differential

Castle 1Castle 2Castle 3Castle 4Castle 5Castle 6Castle 7Castle 8Castle 9Castle 10Castle 11Castle 12
00000000005886

Strategy Notes:

By gambling on getting both the highest castles i'll force anyone else to win at least 3 castles to beat me.

Mod Notes:

I don't think winning three castles is gonna be much of a problem for most opponents.
There is one way I see this strategy almost making sense, but I'll cover that when I come to the one opponent they did defeat.

Strategy Notes:

Well, whoever controls the most castles win, right? So what if I don't have a chance of controlling all of them? I still win overall, right? ;)

Mod Notes:

logan5123 wins the tiebreaker on head-to-head. There were 20 soldiers originally assigned to castle 10, but that was an over-assignment. I did warn him about this.

Strategy Notes:

The computer told me to.

Mod Notes:

I win on the tiebreaker, despite the lower VD. It's not about collecting value, it's about winning battles. The tiebreaker was the closest win you can get(39.5 vs 38.5).

Kinda disappointed in my performance here. Clearly the program I used to find it needs some work.
From the experience here I already have a (mostly) manual strategy for the next time around.

The hash was calculated from the string below:

Code: Select all

[ 3 0 7 16 6 4 28 6 22 25 21 6 ]

Strategy Notes:

Try to get a few more than the minimum other people will put at the early castles, then focus on castles 8-11

Mod Notes:

This is the entry with the highest VD. It has a higher VD than top two entries combined.

In the penultimate position...

StrangerCoug!

Castle 1Castle 2Castle 3Castle 4Castle 5Castle 6Castle 7Castle 8Castle 9Castle 10Castle 11Castle 12

Strategy Notes:

Assume that higher-numbered castles will be more fiercely contested up to a certain point, after which psychology kicks in and people won't send as many soldiers to the highest-valued castles (much like in FiveThirtyEight).

Mod Notes:

StrangerCoug gets 2nd on another close tiebreaker(40 to 38).

39 points is half, I just need 9-12 to get over half.

Mod Notes:

When I saw this entry I immediately saw that this was going to win. The only loss was to the last-place entry. Maybe Iconeum thought entries like this would be more common?
