I don't think an alliance is much good if everyone else knows about it.O_o It's wierd you can't form them via PM. Why isn't that allowed?

And it goes against the site-wide rule: Don't talk to other players outside the game thread unless given permission.

You're not allowed to speak to anybody outside the thread, unless stated otherwise. Forming alliances in games is generally poor form.

I think the most basic reason is to keep the game fun and challenging.

Can you link me to the game(s) you've played? I'm interested in how mafia looks when the no private communicate rule is disabled.

Do you remember the /b/ game, KK? I think that's what it will look like ._.

I only remember that the /b/ game crashed the forum and got shut down for pornography reasons.

Lol...I know why it crashed :shifty:
someone
and a few others spammed Hitler pics. About 7 pages I think it was, all at once. Then Ortolan posted Ladywang and got banned and mith stopped the game. There was also a load of people asking advice in MD and everywhere else.

The last Mindscrew game also had a bit where people can talk out of thread. I don't remember that going too well either.

I bet he came from EM (no offense meant).

If you aren't used to this style of mafia I would suggest that you start with a mini norm, over a large game.

Private communication overcomplicates games, is the main reason. If all communication occurs in thread, then there are less things to worry about, and forum mafia can often get complicated and convoluted as is.

There are also balance issues. A cop can anonymously forward his results, and other similar things.

You are NOT allowed to communicate OUTSIDE of the thread unless explicitly stated in your role PM.

Also, they cannot be formed pre-game.

That's kind of the point.>_> You can ally with helpful people, but do they really possess the role that they say? When I did not allow private communication, the players rallied for it until I changed the rules.

Wait, I don't think you understand what RC is saying. You can always bandwagon/parrot/sheep/vote block with other people to your hearts content. In fact vote blocks (creating a group of townies that vote together) can be a very powerful tool.

Some theme games do allow for PMs. In fact it might be a very interesting setup to have a normal type set-up with pming allowed...

Another reason for not allowing PM's is to avoid cheating, and the sharing privileged information. But the main factor for not allowing pm's is simply a matter of style.

And as for knowing if people are claiming their true role, That is one of the reasons why I enjoy mafia. You never know who is telling the truth and who ain't.

I would imagine that games devolve into simple "he said/she said" stuff with both sides "quoting" private messages. Doesn't sound like fun.

^but it would be an interesting idea if you could somehow regulate it.

Yes, good addition.

And they are not allowed to be held over from game to game, whether "officially" or "unofficially" (well, as official as an unofficial alliance ever gets).

Good, I just wanted to make sure you understood the rules. Getting your nose whapped for something you don't know is wrong is No Fun.

That was part of the point of PMs. You can form private alliances, but you can't always be sure who to trust. Given the nature of your role, that can be useful. If people want to cheat, they are going to cheat. You can't really stop them. People being able to PM won't increase cheating, though. I'm not sure why people think it will.O_o Sharing info is one of the reasons it is needed, so that the Town has a fair shot. They can work together like the Mafia does.

This. I don't normally post in just a quote, but this is very profound. Make sure you read the rules at the top of the page in any mafia games you are in.

Edit: Again, this is mostly a style issue. People here don't like playing with pms. I personally would find it to be a very interesting concept worth perusing in a theme queue. However, for some slightly arbitrary reason normal games do not have pms.

Also chesskid, stop coming into the help forum. Stick to ge and F62. Do not troll this person, they obviously do not get the joke. In fact I'm glad that they do not get the joke because it is not funny at all. Get out now, thank you.
