Is it going down, or is it just overworked? Maybe there's some kind of daily backup scheduled that is maxxing out the server, or another process doing so? Check crontabs.

Some days MySQL is crashing, and some days it gets to a load of 29.

About an hour ago, and about that time most weekdays, I get intermittent errors of the type that mathcam alluded to. Not sure what the server time is, but you did ask for timestamps on the problem. It generally seems to go away in 2-5 minutes.

::edit:: Are you saying we have a maximum of 28 users/requests at any one time? Or was that raised in the last forum upgrade?

No the load is an indication of how much work the CPU has... 1 == 100% i.e. it is fully used. In the example above, we would need 28 more processors to service all the requests that were waiting at that moment. (This server is shared with several other sites that "we" control and several sites that we don't.)

You asked for when we saw these brief outages, JEEP...

Cool feature

Just got an error message I hadn't seen before, so I thought I'd post it.

Really? Weird. Mith, were you doing anything on the server? That's the type of error you get when we are making updates.

Both yesterday morning and this morning (about 2 hours ago, relative to this post), I was getting PHP error messages instead of the forum. This morning I also ended up with "Request timed out when trying to connect to mafiascum.net" or something similar.

I had posted in the Wiki just moments before that, but didn't think to check if I could do so then. It was back up as of (at least) half an hour ago.

Yeah, I've experienced these several times in the last couple of days...JEEP will have a better answer, but I expect it's a "server overload" issue.

A couple of days ago, when we were down for a few hours, the wiki was available.

mith did say it was an overload issue and that they're
still
looking into a dedicated server...

Did it again about 10:30am today, briefer than previously. And yes, the Wiki is available during that time.

Is it possible the proliferation of Mish-Mash & GD threads is putting overt strain on the server? I admit I was post-counting this morning and scrolling through 30+ pages of New York threads in a few minutes....

Yes, I think what happens is that MySQL gets overworked. Sometimes it actually dies. No idea why, but the dedicated server is likely the answer. It's still being actively worked. I think funding questions are mostly what remain.

Tons of mini-crashes in the last several days -- I've seen at least 5 daily. Since I'm not on every hour of the day (contrary to popular belief) I'm sure there have been many more I've missed.

Supremely annoying.

Last night the site was having some problems. It wasn't crashing per se, but it was loading at the speed of a dead elephant--that is to say, not very fast. My connections timed out about 99% of the time, and I know that STD was having the same problems.

I think there should be some official log of when the site has problems to which players accused of lurking can refer.

Before that, I was getting DNS errors for about 15 minutes, so I don't know if that's a defensive measure the server takes before it completely overloads the MySQL server...
