"Too many connections" error

I am having a

lot

of trouble doing anything on the site tonight, since half of the things I'm trying to do result in the following error

Warning:

mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /home/mith/public_html/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 48

and a refusal to connect to the database. I don't see how there can be "too many connections" though, since on the occasions when I do get in, there are only two users online...

Anyway, I hope this is able to post, and I hope it's only a temporary problem...
