why Be8? I feel like it was pretty equal until you decided not to take my pawn back

Because basically the exact same thing would happen with me losing the bishop.

23. ... Bxc6
24. Rb6 Rfc8 (probably would have used the other rook without the bishop blocking)
25. Bb5

Then if I don't defend with the knight the bishop gets taken and if I do

25. ... Ne7
26. Nc4 [forced queen move]
27. Ncxe5 bishop is now attacked 4 times and defended 3 without a way to defend it more.

I'd say my mistake was taking it, though things probably went wrong earlier

Well so like after Nc4 you could play like Qc7 or Qc5 and I could get the pawn back with Nfxe5 but Ncxe5 would hang the rook on b6

Like I think it's equal in that case since we'd be at even material after I get the pawn back, maybe I'm a bit better, but I still think it's preferable to Be8 which I think loses since the bishop is basically trapped on a bad square

Computer says I should have played Be6 with Be8 and Bxc6 both ending at ~+1 after a few moves with perfect play.

Apparently things went wrong when I played Ng4.
