It might be a more a fruitful endeavour if PR's were all guaranteed to be within the ensigns and were guaranteed to be town, but with scum occupying any potential role or rank, there isn't much to gain.

Scum potentially having a second path to victory means we need to protect the command unit for the most part. We should need to be very suspicious of an officer to lynch them early in the game, as regardless of whether scum has a command role, it's quite beneficial for scum if we mislynch a town officer:

- All officers are town: an officer mislynch D1, means town has to protect against the possibility of a backdoor win with greater intensity.
- An officer is scum: an officer mislynch D1 means the scum officer gains greater protection, as town's risk is much higher.

We should be aiming for a 5p endgame with (hopefully) one scum-ensign dead and two officers alive - lynching an officer in a lylo doesn't have the associated risks early in the game, as being wrong fullstop loses the game, so the rank is largely irrelevant. But for now, to minimise scum's chances of opening up the alternate win, we should tiptoe around exposing officers.

I also think PR's initial instinct should be to obey. Unless the orders are obviously doing something to hurt the town, we should be taking the chance the Captain is town (at least early in the game). By disobeying for a large percentage of our actions, we play the game closer to mountainous - and 2:7 mountainous isn't so hot for town - even more so when scum sometimes have a second win condition. We should be trying to be as much value from PR's are possible, and the chance that the Captain is scum shouldn't prevent you from obeying an order if it seems reasonable.

Why?

When you read through the game, you usually get vibes both ways and go with an overall feeling. Being in a hydra tends to blunt tells based on tone, evolution of thought and state of mind because internal sifting and more than one author muddles things up. I think you underestimate how different it is to read a hydra (especially one where you don't know who is posting what). You're not one entity - you have separate methods of processing information, presenting posts, and interacting with people - and when you're trying to pick up on nuances in a player's behaviour, not being able to attribute two separate posts to the same mind DOES prevent them being read as town.

I actually think Sixty is town now, mostly from chatlogs. It'd be a pretty dirty tactic to fabricate entire IM conversations from the point of view of townies, and I think it's less likely Tierce would use an underhand tactic like that as scum given she's a pillar of strong ethics and morals.

In post 341, petapan wrote:but the whole suspicion on everyone voting you is, like, so weak, you know?

I think it's usually a decent method of evaluating wagons, particularly early in the game. I often ask myself what seems likelier; that player X is scum or the wagon pushing player X contains scum. When evaluating my own wagon, I think I have a pretty good radar when it comes to realising that it's scum or town driven - I get lynched often enough, so I probably should be good at it by now. :P

I've recently been trying to make an active change to gamestyle and explain reads less, because nobody really reads what I have to say and rarely believes me. I also think explaining things ad nauseum like I do can lead me into confirmation bias. So, you'll have to believe me when I say my read on Sixty was a combination of PoE and tone. The latter is explained by being a hydra with a gimmick, and (annoyingly) I think the chatlogs probably makes them town now.

Nothing became of the Bodyguard claim, so there is nothing to say.

I'm starting to read Hindu as bored/obnoxious townie - consider it a form of outguessing, but I think he'd at least have a little more caution or put more effort in to make appearances. Too often I have been burnt by townies that play this way - and I think scum just don't as much.

I'm not exactly sure why I think Jarvis is town - he's just sort of remained a fixture in my town list since the beginning and I haven't seen anything yet to overturn it. I initially read him as town early on by the way others were treating him, more so than anything he did.
