Spoiler: flavor
“We will code-name it Operation Overload” said General Dwight Eisenhower in a gruff tone. “The Battle of Normandy. One shot. To turn the game around on the Axis. One shot. And we better make it a damn fine one”.
Lt. General Walter Bedell Smith, chief of staff, stepped up. “The grand operation will be commenced on June 6, 1944, with Operation Neptune, or as is more commonly floating around,
“Now, Hitler has feared an invasion on the Western Front. He has created what became known as Fortress Europe and built the Atlantic Wall – more than 2000 kilometers of concrete and steel coastal defenses stretching from Denmark to the Spanish border.”
“The shortest shipping distance from England to France is through the Pas de Calais region – only 34 kilometers across the English Channel from Dover. It is here the Germans expect us to invade. The Atlantic Wall is strengthened around Calais with mines, barbed wire, other obstructions and powerful artillery. We, however, are not as stupid to fall for such a suicide mission. We, instead, have selected a landing place further south, on the coast of Normandy. It is nearly 160 kilometers from England but is much less defended than Pas de Calais. The large ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, opposite Normandy, could cope with the colossal build-up of ships that will be required for the invasion.”
“Five beaches along the Normandy coast will be the target, and they will be codenamed, from east to west, Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. The first three are the destination of British and Canadian troops, the remaining two of Americans.”
He place a map on the long table before everyone:
“This map shows each route that will be taken, and the departure place each of the sub-invasions. I am counting on each and every one of you to study this map like your life depended on it” he said. “Chances are, it does”
Eisenhower stepped back up. “Now we will not continue to bore you with history. You know what to do. You have been trained, and hardened by your past experiences. I know you will not disappoint”
“All of you, should have, by now received a letter from the ‘higher ups’, which will act as your badge around these parts. It should be stamped by the Allied seal. Make sure to treasure that with your life, and not lose it. If it gets in the wrong hands, this operation will be a tiny bit more tricky to deal with. And it will already be hard enough!”
“You are dismissed. You may go on your merry way.”
“General! There is a messenger at your door!” said one of the servants.
“Bring him in,” replied General Eisenhower”.
Messenger enters, panting from the long ride. “General, I am very sad to report that there has been a small invasion on the camps!”
“What?” shouted the general. “Thats preposterous! How small? And the reports?”
“Well, not many causalities, but the reports from down below don’t believe that was the main intention”.
“Well, the, spit it out man!”
“The believe... it was to infiltrate the camp and set up spies amongst us”
‘Those dirty bastards. I’ll have their heads for this. Call all the commanders!”
‘Umm, that’s the thing General. The reports indicate that the infiltrators have hidden themselves with your commanders.”
“Well, I know how my god-damn commanders look like!”
“Umm, yes, yes, that’s true. But the other thing is...”
“Yes man, spit it out” the general raged.
“Umm, they have already went out into the fields to charge into battle soon. With the infiltrators pretending they’re on our side, and commanding our troops”
“Shit! Send a message to each and every one of them to hold council. They may not really be familiar with each other, but at the end of the day, I think they will catch the infiltrators. It should be a peace of cake”
“Umm, sorry to be blunt general, but it may not be as easy and you think. The reports indicate that very experienced German commanders led the attack. So our commanders may not have ease finding the intruders”
“Yes, but I believe in my own commanders. Send them to make council at ones! They have by the end of the day to find a traitor! We cannot afford to have them at council for long. By the end of the day, they will be sent into battle”
“But, how will they continue their investigations?”
“Ah, you see, their job will be to fight
