Site Downtime (July 2016)

I um. I want this to come across in the most undickish way possible...but it might come out rude anyway...

Who in their right minds thinks this site is worth money?

It generates no revenue, has a user base that continues to decline and requires hosting costs that are not recouped in any way.

It's been a great thing for me throughout my life and I'm very thankful to the people who continue to put hard work and money into keeping it running, but the idea that someone would pay money for the privilege of chucking money down the hosting black hole and dealing with the constant aggravation of users like shotty is mind boggling to me.

Yep. This site a black hole of time effort and money. The fact that there are people out there who keep throwing those things in there is amazing, and they don't get enough credit.

I think I was basically going to say what mith just said but it's good that he was the one that said it.

Every time we have any sort of downtime, people act like there is an imminent chance of the site dying from lack of funds and that there is some desperate need to fundraise right now including all sorts of awful things like banner ads and subscription content.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure we're pretty stable right now in terms of funding and these drastic measures are pretty much not necessary at all. This isn't to say that people can't donate money to mith to help defray the costs of the site, and in fact I'd encourage them to do it, but neither of these crashes had anything to do with lack of hosting funds as far as I understand them.
