Search, Possible Server Move

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Mar 21, 2007 11:35 am

Post by mith »

We will probably be turning search off again temporarily to see if that stops the recent CPU Quota errors (recently, it's mostly been search queries running slowly enough to trigger them). So, if you find it's disabled, that's why.

After that, I'll be thinking about moving us to the high performance (/more expensive) plan. If that happens, the site may be down for a couple hours, but I'll let you know in advance when that would be.

I've enabled the searchuser mode of search. It's used in a lot of the admin tools.

I got the CPU error w/in the last hour and had a thought: how many posters here use Firefox? Could viewing the site in tabs somehow leave a connection to the site open even after we've stopped browsing it?

I don't understand the guts of browsers (oviously), but wasn't sure if you could compare the number of browsers on the site at any given time to when the site hides in the bathroom.

(And of course I got the error again as I tried to post this :p)

No, leaving a tab or window open doesn't mean anything as far as the server is concerned. It's not automatically refreshing or anything.

Opening a bunch of tabs with lots of big requests all at once *could* cause a problem, but it's not what's causing this.

If being an adult means that you can't take people up on their word, then I will never be an adult. Not ever. I was given a promise, by someone who claimed to be mith, that I could abuse my gimmick and damn it if I didn't take him up on his offer. Is that so wrong? Isn't trusting people to not lie to you when they say they'll let you abuse your trademark the
real
adult thing to do? I think so. I know in my heart so.

I'm glad we could have this chat.

I've opened a ticket requesting a move to the higher CPU plan. More details when I have them.

Is it possible to enable 'posts by user' only, on the profile page? Maybe just for users with mod powers somewhere? It's a
really
helpful tool for finding out if someone has vanished or just forgot a game (especially since site search is down).

May also consider putting up some Google ads to help cover the cost. Not sure if that's on the NWIH list for any particular reason, but I've noticed there are none up.

flay: I'm wondering if that isn't the piece that is most used and therefore the one we want to have disabled...

Kison: That's for mith to decide, but I'm all for keeping it ad-free. That said, the google ads are generally not very intrusive.

Unsure of what kind of costs you all are looking at, though with the crowd here, I'm sure they would not yield nothing considerable. It's just a suggestion, of course.

For myself (and I'm sure there'd probably be others), I would be glad to donate some cash to keep the website up and running and ad-free.

JEEP: Totally understandable, which is why I was hoping to limit it to those with an 'official' use for it. If it needs to stay off until the server move, so be it.

That said, mith, I'd rather try a donation model before ads.

Second: Donations
Most firefox users (thats everyone, right? RIGHT???) have the adblock plug-in, so google ads wouldn't make much sense.

I would gladly send in a small donation to help the site.

Hell, I'll send one NOW since I know the site already costs you money. Any interest in sharing what you're shelling out?

Grr, I need to bug bluehost some more. I still haven't heard anything more about this.

(This is a repeat of what I've said elsewhere, but: It is extremely unlikely this site will ever have ads. I don't like them. Donations are a possibility sometime in the future, depending on where we end up moving, and I appreciate the offers to help out.)
