I really like the magnifying glass design, and so this is exploring improvements to something already great more than anything, but I was wondering whether it might look a little better with something that made the magnifying glass pop out a little more? I experimented with a shadow:

Not really sure if it works or if the flat aesthetic is better.

i dont think a shadow will work because
1) it muddies the legibility especially at zoomed out levels
2) if you're going to start adding in light effect, then you kinda have to also account for the action of the lens in the magnifying glass, which will be super complication

It's p easy. If you don't like something you say "I do not like X because of Y. Could you/maybe try Z to see if that fixes Y."

It takes no effort to say something is bad and does little other than demoralize a volunteer trying to make something pro bono
Maybe you should read the thread instead of coming in here to blindly complain about something
again
, it's pretty apparent that I've been doing that

Agree with 1

It already feels kind of cluttered with a magnifying glass over the text (though I like it)

Adding the shadow adds extra complexity

And I don't think it looks good on black theme, which is the default forum theme that, to my knowledge, the majority of users use

I actually had a lensing effect in my original one, don't think anyone noticed because it was too subtle, but being more aggressive with the refractive index made it unreadable.

I saw it and thought it was cool
but agree with you if you notice it as screen res its gonna look weird, and if you don't it seems like extra work on the designer's part

Imo no shadow works a bit better as a logo as that starts to make it look a bit busy

just like looking for clues I guess
and no, I don't know why there wasn't any fingerprint outside the magnifying glass

also combining the fingerprint with the 'scum' colored eye is two layers of symbolism that clash, so if I reiterated this, I'd likely put the 'i' text back to white in the magnifying glass

I made one just to expound on some of my ideas, I don't actually even know what the correct size is and can't like prettify anything in any meaningful way; this isn't as-is something I'd want used.

Image

Making the dot of an eye a head increases complexity, but what if the thing we discover about the dot is that it doesn't exist at all? metaphorically it was a faked town behaviors or somesuch.

I've rarely seen magnifying glass with triangular handles, and since those are geometric I kind of like them better for a logo. Either way, having the magnifying glass handle hanging off the logo lets you imagine it's proportional without it consuming a large proportion of the image (or, importantly, being responsible for increasing the minimum necessary height of the image just for the magnifying glass's sake.

I used san serif cuz shaft.ed suggested san serif and shafted is kewl

cutting any part of a logo off on the side is a huge faux pas imo. you wouldnt want any part of the text cut off no?

Image
take amazon's logo for instance. if the sweeping arrow on the bottom was cut off it would ruin the harmony of the logo. the same if we choose to include any extra visual elements like a magnifying glass

Is that Amazon logo actually cut off on the side for anyone else or is it just me?

Cutting it off might work ok in instances where there is a natural boundary (like the top of the site banner) but its likely to be used in other places, as listed in the OP.

Looking at amazons logo really makes me want to try to make the magnifying glass one less cluttered.

Edit: like making the F wrap around the top of the glass and the a tuck under it to the right. That would take custom character work though.

If it's bad to hang it, the other idea I had was to have the handle go over the 'a' (covering up as little as you can, custom characters might help) and then it gets to utilize some of the space from the natural gap between "mafia" and "scum" (since I think most people are amenable to extra kerning between the 'a' and the 's' ?"

Spent a while playing with this idea and it is unworkable even as a concept at my skill level.

the magnifying glass is a great idea, though i don't think anyone has nailed it outright. until that happens, my favourite is actually this;

the typewriter look is great, especially on sepia. is kitschy and hearkens back to a bygone era - perhaps an aesthetic we ought to embrace given we spend our time roleplaying what is essentially a parlour game on a bbcode forum.

either way, consider this post another vote for lowercase + no tagline.

I actually kinda like this. I think the magnifying glass with the rounded handle that's been being used looks a little better, but I do like the typewriter effect and I think it's worth exploring combining the two.

It could maybe help with providing a barrier to prevent the mafias cum issue with sepia that was brought up. If we use that fingerprint pattern we don't necessarily need the magnifying glass to be over the I either.
Dunnstral wrote:Which begs the question: Who are caled, chamber, panthaleon even talking about?
Does it even matter? I think the takeaway is try to be mindful to post with the intention of suggesting improvements. If you're already doing that, keep on keeping on.
