Happy scumday thesp!

7 wonders is one of my favorites, we play with both the leaders and cities expansions. Also I caved and bought the app that calculates scores for you, super handy.

I'd never go just to go to the con, but if there is ever a mini scummer meet happening at one, let me know and I'd strongly consider it. Too short of notice for this year though.

I got Mage Wars for my birthday last year. I played it with Singer once then I haven't touched it again. not sure why.

Probably because it takes forever to learn how to play. It seems like it could be really fun once people know the how and why. You guys seemed to have a good time with it despite taking nearly an hour to get started.

It's something I'd be interested in trying out someday.

I'm slowly trying to build a collection, and saw that 7 Wonders was half off on Amazon. Do they or anyone else do any Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on board games?

I also got Forbidden Desert and it's super fun! Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to try Pandemic :D

Amazon does occasional deals on board games. IIRC they did do some board games on sale as part of their regular sales.

but yes. get 7 wonders. I find that it has the widest appeal and is fun every time.

Pandemic is a lot of fun, would definitely recommend :)

Pandemic legacy is getting good reviews and might be an interesting alternative if you mostly play with the same people.
I personally found Pandemic + Forbidden Desert+ Forbidden island somewhat similar and don't really find myself craving different flavors of the same basic formula.

Secret Hitler

Thoughts?

It looks like Resistance+ to me. Definitely of interest to me because I've been looking for more social deduction games.

Seems ok, though I'm more interested in Deception: Murder in Hong Kong atm on the social deduction side of things.

I haven't played too much Resistance but my suspicion is that the rule "if three President/Chancellor tickets are rejected, a random policy is enacted" will help distinguish it from Resistance.

In Resistance, you trivially need to agree to the last team. In Secret Hitler, you might want to reject all three and take your chances with the random draw (which is somewhat Fascist weighted at the start but changes with the cards in play). It sounds weird, but I think this is a case when randomness actually helps the game. In Resistance, if you don't trust whoever is setting up that fifth team, your only recourse is to backwards induct to the last team you would care about. Having the nuclear option of rejecting all the teams is more interesting. After all, if you totally distrust the president, you have no reason to agree with
any
chancellor - the president is quite likely to be able to pass two fascist cards to the chancellor, and they get to pick what happens with the power. But as a fascist, you would love to have this option for every liberal president, because it makes fascist policies more likely AND doesn't let the liberal use the powers.

So both sides have incentive not to compromise, but fascists always know when refusing to compromise helps their side, and liberals don't. I like that.

Played
The King's Armory
last night.

Game time is WAY too long, but once you get into it you lose track of time because of the level of fun. Penguin and I are trying to get a feel for how to house-rule to speed things up; even if it's just skipping the first two waves and randomizing the resulting rewards the team would have had.

Map being super modular means we can take time to really experiment, too.

Exceptionally good game, with a large initial up-front time investment.
