BSG is stupendous. I'm miserable at the Resistance, oddly enough, and I recently bought a game called Alcatraz: The Scapegoat where either everyone loses or one person loses and the betrayal revolving who gets the bitch seat is great.

Crisis management is basically my schtick in board games, Game of Thrones can be frustrating in that regard because you have to count on others to mitigate crises for you lest you overextend. Dominant Species, now THERE's a crisis management game. Damn.

7 Wonders has become the modern day gateway game, replacing Catan. It's simple enough to teach, easy to learn and deep enough that it doesn't wear out too fast. If you're living with folks, Descent 2nd Edition might tickle your fancy, if you're ticklish that way.

It takes a bit, and the expansions add so much that I refuse to go back to not using them, but it's a good one. If even Vi can like it, you know you have a winner.

The main thing Leaders does is deepen the strategy. I begin to consider trick plays, the order in which I play my leaders, etc. It also makes an economy build viable.

As for Space Alert, Erin has it (big surprise) and it is loud and hectic and a rush. Not the kind of thing to play in a library.

It's one of my favorite games. There are a tons of options each turn and never enough actions ala worker placement, but all the actions are placed and then all the actions resolve adding tons of strategy and sneakiness.

The game play is complicated. If you can keep it all straight, it's quite rewarding. It still has something of an element of randomness, but I've played it 20 times at least and the randomness has only ruined one of them.

I prefer 4, actually. Six is going to be a very long game, and 3 can quickly become one sided. Then again, the strategy differs with number of players, you get 2 actions a turn with six players vs. 4 with 4.

Each of the six animal types has a particular advantage and a starting food. Through the game more food is added to the board through the Abundance action, and you gain the ability to survive in new places and compete for dominance by picking up new element disks through the Adaptation action. These are simply drawn out of a bag, and this is where the randomness can hurt. I played a three player game with Birds, Insects, and Reptiles, which subsist on Nuts, Grass, and Sun respectively. Only those three elements showed up in the Adaptation action, and none of them showed up in Abundance action. Element disks that aren't placed through Abundance eventually fall off the board through other actions. This lead to a very boring game where no one had any elements except for grass, sun, and nuts. I'm still getting over it. More players will keep this from happening.

Hey, you GoT owners. They've just released a somewhat book/show spoilery Print to Play expansion designed to be played with 4 players, Feast For Crows. It's a bit more subterfugey than the usual stuff.

You're never supposed to open it. The game directions will never tell you to open it. It's hidden under the plastic insert in the box. Some players will never find it. But it's there. What do you do?

The bit with Legacy is that you don't compete to global domination, but for 4 or 5 Victory Points, leading to shorter games. If one player gets eliminated, the player who did the eliminating should be a turn or two away from winning. The winner gets to do fun things to the board, like claim starting locations, name continents (with a sharpie, on the board), buff up one of the country cards, destroy one of the country cards (physically rip in half, with gusto and hopefully a look of malice at whomever had buffed it previously), etc.

The box has lots of envelopes and containers that are sealed. You only open them when certain conditions exist in a game, like players spending multiple missles (upgrades any roll to a six, even if you aren't in the fight) on one turn. This might open up new armies to play as, or other zanyness. By the end of a 15 game campaign, the board stops changing, but you have something that is profoundly yours. I hear many stories of people taking their old board, framing it, hanging it in their game room, and buying a new copy.

Reddit had an idea for spicing up Catan if you get bored with it later. Find another d6 of one of the colors, red or yellow, and roll two of them, choosing one.

In post 663, Chevre wrote:I got my mom to play Stone Age. She found it difficult, but interesting. In my play I rarely use the love shack or the field, and those didn't crop up in her strategy, so they were pretty much left out and made a nice simplification of the game. Interestingly, she hoarded resources...I don't know if it was a good strategy or not but I'd never seen it before.

I think I will try again to introduce it to my friends.

Also, does anyone have experience with Anomia? I'm thinking of buying the party edition right off the bat because it looks so good.
If you're going to get Anomia, the party edition is certainly the way to go. I did not know it existed and, already owning Anomia, I'm thinking about getting it. I don't play a lot of Anomia though, most of my friends aren't big boardgamers. I have multiple friends who were sad to hear I had gotten Anomia as they consider SpotIt the superior game.

I think the leaders mechanic adds the ability to plan what you want to do before the game starts whereas City adds variation to the main phase. I value one over the other a little bit.

Early to mid 2014 we'll be hearing more about Seafall, a Legacy game built from the ground up to take advantage of the innovations that Risk Legacy brought around without the constraints of having to still be Risk.

Played Caverna: The Cave Dwellers a few days ago. Fucking great. I still want Terra Mystica though.

If you have non-competitive friends, you can actually get them to the table with co-ops. If we win we all can talk about it fondly, if we lose we can all gripe, and if someone is not having fun we can cheat a little to spice it up.

I heard that they actually ran out of wood to make all the different animals.

If you can get a copy of Coup, Reck, go for that.

Love Letter and Coup both take around the same amount of time, main difference for me is that Love Letter is more random and Coup has more skill and bluffing. That said, if you already have Masquerade, I understand the hesitation. How many players are you shooting for?

I've played a few of those, and want to try Tzolk'in a lot, but no game on that list makes me get that cardboard lust up like Archipelago. I've only read about it, but it sounds perfect for scummers.

But yet it doesn't seem to feel patchwork-y. Mage Knight and A Study in Emerald both have a ton of different mechanisms that work but feel cobbled together. Archipelago sounds smoother.

It's a son of a gun to find, and maybe they'll kickstart for another printing, but if you're a fan of 7 Wonders you should really try Among the Stars by Artipia Games.

Played Kemet for the first time the other day. Very fun, though I disagree with a few of the rules.
