I have been roped in to a teams modern event. Basically each nonbasicland card is only available to one deck.

Currently we are playing affinity, 8rack (I think), and I am on UR pyro thing.

Any tips on boarding so we aren't stepping on either others techs?

My main advice is to not play 8 rack. It's not a real deck, and its even worse when everyone is curving bloodbraid into k command.

8rack is bad, but 8whack is real
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

I also think affinity is pretty poorly positioned right now for what its worth.

When was that?

Like the reason is probably simply because it doesn't use any cards that other decks want.

Yeah, but wouldn't that make Affinity a compelling deck to run in teams? You don't have to switch really anything up except the sideboard. You get all the top choices without running into the other two decks. I 2nd not running 8rack. There's just almost certainly a better way to use 4 lilliana's that won't break the bank that much(aside from the already purchase lillianas).

On a different note, I've been going to a pauper tournament every week, and it's been tremendously fun, but part of me is hoping pauper doesn't catch on or get made into a big thing because I don't want it to explode in price. Chainer's Edict is already like 10 bucks. Masters 25 kinda did me a disservice in reprinting the cards I already had and only helping me out by reprinting Ash Barrens.

yes, its compelling for that reason, but 60 basics also doesnt take any cards away from anything else, if you get my point.

If the deck is poorly positioned it doesn't matter how much it constrains your other decks.

I'm hoping to attend GP Beijing in early May. Anyone else going to be there? Alternately, any tips for a first time GP-er?

I believe it will be Dominaria (Limited), so I can't practice with the cards yet.

There can be a lot of downtime between rounds. I suggest going with people you know.

I go to a lot of GPs. Chambers advice is good. GPs are much less fun without friends.

Here are two articles by Reid Duke that you might find helpful:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... 2015-05-18
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... 2015-05-26

In terms of baseline stuff, I would bring a water bottle and snacks with you. Grand Prix day 1s are 10 hour affairs, and they're held in convention centers that will probably not have good food or drink options. (I once spent 20$ on a salad and a jumbo pretzel at a GP.) Make sure you have all the things you will need to play the format. Dice, sleeves, etc.

If you've done a sealed pptq before, the process of building your deck wont be terribly different from what you're used to.

I have a limited RPTQ to go to in Dallas next month or is it May? Then I'll go to GP Dallas around that time too.
Looking for love in Alderaan places.

So I went to my first event with the deck I'm meant to be playing at the teams. First ever time I've played Modern, including kitchen table. Just never played it.

So the deck is UR Prowess Thing.

I had some siding issues, Search became a dead draw because it was too slow, so we are taking those both out for a 3rd Opt and an Unsubstantiate, because I had some big issues in the Hollow matchup to reset some boardstate. I see that having been an issue in other matchups as well, and helps with some other weird stuff like uncounterables.

There's a few tweaks to be made but I am feeling it better now. Going again this Saturday to get some more practice in.

1-2 Burn. Sided badly, really good debrief on things I could have done better. I feel like I can make this matchup work with just better play and better siding.
2-1 8Rack. I was in control most of the time, made a big missplay, forgot to side Ratchet Bomb, still won. (Was my teammate, I don't like his chances really)
1-1-1 Ur OTK. I would have won game three given one or two more turns, I had him completely locked and topdecking.
0-2 Delve. I kept a poor hand. I saw playables and then realised after I had already said keep it was a bunch of situational stuff. Game 2 he got favourable random discards and I couldn't establish parity.

I honestly think that I would have won round 3 if I knew the deck better because I would have played faster., I also think I could have gotten something out of round 1. Deck tweaks will help the round 4. Super early in to learning the deck, but I'm having fun.
