AotSS absolutely counts. If I was gonna get pedantic (I am) I prefer alternate win conditions to the standard win condition triggered by alternate losing conditions but Approach is the former and mill is fun as hell too.
Sphinx's Rev is still my favourite card probably ever (I started playing in 2011). Unconditional four-mana wrath (the last one ever) and Rev in the same format was sick. And yet there were still many other playable and good decks (and no bans). A golden era of standard.

think the jankiest deck I built was this pile in SOM -> AVR standard (aka when I started)
Primal Surge flips the whole deck and you stack draw card triggers in some order. rune-scarred demon to grab Surge, Lab Maniac's the win condition protected by Asceticism and Avacyn
I think the 3 Soul of the Harvest were budget subs for more sad robots, idfk what the shrine of boundless growth are in that board for. I don't know what half of that board is for actually. [e] my best guess is there was a plan to side out the combo and actually be able to cast cards, hence all the ramp? more land-search creatures because Caged Suns were decent alt wincons in a pinch? I dunno. beast tracker doesn't even grab anything good.
If you don't know how to lie, then how do you know when you're being lied to?
No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.
I used to love jank decks with strange win cons and maybe I still do enjoy them but Arena has driven me to play aggressive decks that end the game early because you have to grind soooooo much to reach Mythic. It's miserable to play an hour long game for two ticks (or none if things don't go your way). I can play all day and rank up maybe twice depending on how many control decks I go up against.
That being said, people should still play control and jank and have fun with it. It's Wizards fault for creating a stupid grind system that punishes that type of play.
Definitely not wrong. For awhile i had monored built up. I'm fortunate that my collection has become deep enough that I can play archetypes i actually like in historic to finish my quests.
I just wish people would act less superior about the decks they enjoy playing. Especially in like competitive settings. It's so WEIRD to see people go to a tournament and whine about control. Especially when they're playing some sort of linear nonsense specifically because it wins really fast.
Like bro there's a lot of ways to win the game. Quit being a dick
The other thing is that in real life when you 'go off' as a control deck people tend to concede. In arena you have to play to the bitter end because it seems like all my opponents are happy to go on for an hour until I draw my one dream trawler or whatever.

Oh classic blunder. Your wincon should just be Teferi and Sharknado
Don't play historic. Also I was exaggerating for comic effect, I have more wincons than 1 dream trawler. Although I don't play enough or win enough to get rare wildcards to actually finish my deck.

just made mythic in constructed for the first time! climbed most of the way there playing azorius auras in historic, though i switched to rakdos sacrifice this week because i'm sick of losing to sultai.
then the first match i played in mythic i got that dumb bug that's going around where i came back from sideboarding with no cards in my library. man, i'd have been so mad if that happened one match earlier.
