I bought a journal to record my first geocaching adventures and made small riddles/quotes stashed in tubes to leave behind at each site if possible. But I haven't been around to doing it and there's a site right by my house since I've been swamped in other things >>ll

Looked for some caches near my town b/c of this thread. One was in a sketchy looking front yard and the other two were on exit ramps off the nearest interstate and I had my 6 yr old brother with me so I didn't bother with those. Another victim of rinky dink small towns.

Started caching again :-D found four caches in my area last weekend. There was a nest of kittens near one of the caches, in a park. Awesome.

First thing's first, you'll need a mobile-size GPS. Your smartphone counts, though it's not really intended for this purpose and will perform accordingly. Do not attempt to use a device intended for navigating cars. Do not attempt to use a robot designed for surveying (seriously). It is possible to go without a GPS entirely, but geocaching has enough schadenfreude associated with it without flying blind.

Once done, register an account with one of the geocaching web sites. Not surprisingly, the biggest one is geocaching.com.

Find coordinates near you; I prefer to use the map for this because if you know the area at all you can easily see where you are and where you'll be going. Travel to that general location and use your GPS to get to within 20 feet of the coordinates. Once done, it's all about finding the container - and if you're in an urban environment, grabbing it inconspicuously. Once you find the container, open it, sign the log, and clandestinely replace the container where it was.

That's pretty much it. You'll find yourself going places you would never have considered otherwise - parks you never knew existed, parts of town you never go to, and if you live around here, up trees. As an aside, caches are rated for difficulty and terrain - if you're just starting, by all means stick to ** or lower until you get comfortable. I'm inept at *** Difficulty and I have some idea of what to look for half the time, so etc.

---

For reference, some of the more interesting caches I've run across were:
*inside the hollow underside of a statue's uplifted shoe (and the container was fuzzy just to creep you out, since you can't see it)
*inside a bird house
*inside a public telephone booth
*under a bridge over the deepest part of a creek
*at the end of a pole stuffed into the wall of a concrete fountain
*up a tree on an island in the middle of a creek (accessible by crossing a conveniently-fallen log)
*inside a gigantic spider
Everything you say and do matters. People will respond in ways you may never see. May those responses be what you intend.

My favorite was in a fake birdhouse. That was neat.

Also, if you have an iPhone, I use Trimble Outdoor Navigator; you can send coords to the app directly from geocaching.com, and it's free IIRC.

Here.

I have about 60-70 caches to log, I'm considerably above 700 finds at present. :effort: >.>

I use a Magellan eXplorist GC as a dedicated GPSr, and then my Android has the free and awesome c:geo app.

I found my first caches like this. However, I do not advise it, it is really quite frustrating and pre-checking things with Google Maps will still lead to a lot of error in the final result. Additionally, it becomes even worse for urban environments, because you are trying to be discreet and have such a huge area to look through in comparison with what a GPSr user would be doing.
