Oh, yeah. Been playing those rougelike games for decades. Hack/nethack, moria/angand, ADOM, ect. Awesome stuff.

Nethack is the classic one; it's been around since the 80's. (well, we just called it "hack" back then).

But yeah, my favorite these days is probably ADOM.

I haven't played Hack but to my knowledge it's little different from early NetHack. Tried Rogue though.

OK so inspired by this thread i downloaded the android version. It sucks, but also, its impossible to stop! You guys owe me like 20 hours of my life so far.

I find the easyest is a Valkyrie. I spoiled myself almost immediately, so I know this is the general consensus also. My best was reaching the top of sokoban, and blewing the level, whole having an unided polymorph and polymorph control rings in my possession. I am curerntly at mines end, but had the unfortunate luck of grabbing a loadstone. Im stressed, steped on a fire trap and got surrounded by monsters who I cant kill, and even if I could, I cant go upstairs! No healing with stressed status either, and im at 2 HP! What to do? Im thinking of starting to randomly read unIDd scrolls and/or quaff unided potions and hoping for the best. I tried #praying but Tyr is obviously a dick, as he didnt remove the curse on the loadstone, despite my pleas. If only I could somehow get rid of it. I was thinking of #dipping it in a fountain, but the closest one is in minetown, seems so far...

THIS IS HARD.

Too many commands for me. :( Anyone who can compile a list of the most common, useful ones?

I have found the help, but there's a lot to remember. "NetHack knows the following commands:" and then a list of like 40 different commands, of which maybe 10 are useful initially?

You don't need most of them most of the time. Look for good equipment, curse-test it with your pet, swing at stuff. If you're playing one of the solid roles like val you should be okay for a while, at least long enough to figure out the rest.

Well, first things first, scribble down Elbereth. If you have any way to scribble it permanently, all the better.

Why can't you go upstairs?

If you still have the poly rings, wear them both -- polymorphing will solve your food and HP problems.

Leave the loadstone in your inventory, and try to pray at an altar -- that might uncurse it. Maybe you can polymorph into something really strong, like a giant or dragon, to deal with the stressed status.

Careful dipping into the fountains in Minetown, if they dry up it will anger the guards.

I lost my horse as a knight that way. Dipped for Excalibur, dried up the fountain, and they killed my horse out from under me.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

#pray will uncurse a loadstone you are carrying if there is nothing "worse" for it to fix. So that will work in a pinch, too.

After seeing this thread I decided to pick up ADoM again. I go ahead and make a random character because why not. I get Female Gnome Mindcrafter. Not thaaaaat bad, even if I do have difficulty playing the class.

Level one, go into the small cave for some exp before tackling the raider lord (as I always do). There are five enemies in the starting room, including a skeleton; definitely not what you want to start with on a gnomish mindcrafter. I think, "Alright, I might be able to do this if I just step back and wait for the skeleton to move to the side so I can confuse the rest of them."

One step later, one of the monsters falls into a viper pit and suddenly I'm surrounded by eight angry pit vipers. Predictably, I did not make it out alive.

Time to give NetHack a try.
I am in the bottom 10% of scumhunters onsite!
