Can someone help me with Leaf Green?

My cousin just nuked my Leaf Green and I'm restarting it.
I chose Charmander and caught Pikachu. I just went through the 2nd Gym and I'm just loafing around from there.

Can someone suggest me what pokemon to catch and raise?
Preferably complete with their personality and moves I should teach them.

Option 1:
1. Use only Charmander.
2. Get Charzard
3. Stomp everything.
4. Beat the game using only a single Battle Pokemon

Option 2:
1. Catch random stuff you find.
2. Get a couple decently leveled.
3. Beat the game.

There is no deep tactics or team comps needed to beat it, it's a game that is meant to be beatable by 8 year olds. Just go with the flow.

The Safari Zone is your friend. I caught a Kanghaskhan, slapped Rest, Body Slam, Shadow Ball, and Earthquake on it, and I ripped through the entire rest of the game with it. Kangy's Early Bird ability means that it wakes up from Rest after one turn instead of two, which is almost unfair.
