Can I interest you in MegaTen?

Thanks to Nexus for reminding about this wonderful series.

Known also as the Megami Tensei series, this game has been acclaimed to be the 3rd most renowned RPG series next to FF and DQ series. The first game in the original series was a dungeon crawler RPG based on a novel with the heavy involvement of demons and mythology and released on the Famicon in 1987 before moving on to having other spinoff series such as Devil Summoner, Persona, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor and others. The series itself mostly revolves around modern Japan and the games all usually have multiple paths in which you can take. The rest is usually dependent on which of the series's games you play.

With formalities out of the way, I'm personally pumped for Persona 5. Who else is? I haven't actually played any from the actual series and I'm sort of apprehensive about the other games in the series but I've played both DS series's before, they weren't my thing.

I have only played/finished Persona 3 and 4 on the PS2. I attempted to play DDS once, and didn't enjoy it.

Persona 3 is up there with my greatest games ever. It was so much fun! I had the ending of 4 spoilt before I played it, so I didn't enjoy it as much.

Persona 3 is also the only game (other than Tell Tale's Walking Dead) to make me cry.

With the stuff in Persona 3, definitely some parts are really sad. I also found it more enjoyable than 4 but that was just personal preferences. (Mitsuru, Evokers, City setting)

I could never bring myself to finish either 3 or 4 yet actually...

I love Megaten. :]

I've played Persona 2 (IS/EP), Persona 3/FES, Persona 4, Persona 4: Arena, SMT3: Nocturne, DDS1/2, Raidou v King Abaddon, and uhh that's all I can think of right now. Persona 4 is my favorite. I considered buying a VITA just for the rerelease, but then it felt kind of silly.

I'm really happy that Persona 5 was FINALLY announced.

One of my favorite series. I've played SMT1, SMT3: Nocturne, DDS1/2, Devil Summoner (Raidou vs. The Soulless Army), Persona 3, Persona 4, and SMT4. I actually finished SMT4 a couple of months ago and it absolutely blew me away. Still remains my favorite 3DS game.

Been meaning to pick up Persona 2 but I'm pretty backlogged on everything right now so I just do the obvious thing...keep procrastinating on it.

You can play it. I'll just keep thinking about it and how awesome it is.

I also bought Persona 4: Arena recently since it went on sale and that was a nice time killer and also to keep up on speed on the Persona timeline. That was very nice. Might get Persona 2 if I feel like it. o_o

I tried playing the PSP Persona re-release, but I didn't get very far.

The branching paths seem neat, though.

Eww...English version? Alright.

Also branching paths in this are nice. In fact, I played the game for the social link choices really. The combat after a while didn't really interest me in 4. Persona 3 however...goddamn.

The main difference between 3 and 4 combat AFAICR is whether you can control your party members....

Which one should I play first? I have a 3DS and PS2 at my disposal.

I'd play Persona 3 FES or Persona 4 first. These are pretty accessible. I think Persona 4 is a bit more polished; Persona 3 has pacing issues that Persona 4 solves to an extent. However, they take place in the same universe, so you'll miss some references to P3 if you play P4 first.

If you like those, I'd play Nocturne/DDS1/DDS2/Raidou2/Raidou1, roughly in that order.

I haven't played SMT4, though, so I can't comment on that.

I might get SMT4 just to try and get a feel of the series but it's not really high on my to do list.

I personally enjoyed P3 over P4 in terms of the dungeonnering feel but the tired factor in P3 can get annoying unless you know how to use the system well. I am currently going through with P3P and finding the Female route very refreshing. Going to go through P1 and the P2s before P5 comes out. P3 makes a lot of subtle references for P2 and P2 makes hardcore references to P1 so... Might want to start at P1 first if you really love the series on P3FES and P4. Especially if you're wanting to know what
the butterfly flying around in the beginning is a reference to.
.

Also @Ythan, you should play the remake for a closer interpretation of how the original game is like. Revelations: Persona kinda butchered the feel of the game hardcore with it's racism.

I found P1 unplayable. P2IS/EP is fun if you don't mind grinding, though, since you either have to grind for tarot cards to get good personas or grind for XP to make your starter personas able to carry everything.

This feels like an extreme reaction to the level of racism in the localization.

Yeah, as soon as I posted that I didn't think the right word was racism, more so phobia of foreign media in relation to public opinion in the US at the time. So I guess it was a business choice more than anything.

Bump and double post but like... Is anyone pumped for Persona Q? Because I'm totally going to buy it as soon as it comes out on EU or AU, whichever is first.

This needs a bump.

Persona 5 just got a major trailer featuring gameplay, concept, and more...no release date yet but they haven't backed down from it being released in 2015...

Looks pretty fucking sick. Graphics and style are off the charts, and the super stylized menus are awesome as well.

Igor is back, attended by twins...and it looks like the enemies are demons(Personas) as well as shadows. Interesting to see what the story will be for this game besides lol bank robbers.

Story of P3 FES is better, imo, but P4 is easier to play. I did also get the story of P4 spoilt so that goes some way to explaining my reasoning.
