Ace Attorney!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Jul 05, 2014 8:48 am

Anyone else play?

I'm really looking forward to Ace Attorney vs. Professor Layton in August - I'll admit, a good deal of that looking forward to is because Takumi wrote it, rather than Eshiro. I like Eshiro's games well enough, it's just that the case work (to use someone else's analogy) feels too much like a bunch of baby turtles wandering around a room and you can't move forward until one of them runs into the door. Particularly in Investigations. Not so much in Dual Destines, but that dynamic was still there.

I think there is a different tone in the later games--post the original trilogy. It goes from 'this is the story and how does it effect the characters' to 'let's solve the mystery'. Not that this is a bad thing--DD is my favorite game. This is largely a product of Takumi moving on, though, as Ghost Trick is similarly character-focused as the original trilogy.

Like, take a look at the premise of the each game's plotline.

AA1:
The demon prosecutor who has lived his whole life for perfection finds that the truth he's upheld might be hollow and build upon lies itself--even going into his primary mentor being a corrupt individual himself. (while Phoenix is the viewpoint of the game, I think AA1 makes much more sense as a narrative if you view Edgeworth as the protagonist).

AA2:
Phoenix is put into situations that test truly what he feels is wrong or right according to the law and examines his morality in such situations--Acro and Enguarde explore the premise quite well.

AA3:
There isn't a major overarching theme to this game--it has some things to say about Revenge, since every major baddie is fueled by revenge, but otherwise is primarily there to wrap up the loose plotlines of the old games--Phoenix mentioning he'd been in court before, Morgan's revenge, Misty Fey, etc).

AA4:
Figure out exactly why Phoenix was disbarred years ago, and take down the man in charge.

AA5:
Figure out exactly what happened to Blackquill and end the Dark Age of the Law.

AAI:
Deconstruct the mystery behind who is in charge of the smuggling ring(a fun thing, though, is this game ties into 1-5 in a way--Gant's last warning to Edgeworth was that he would one day meet a foe he could not beat within the confines of the law, and, well, what happens with Alba? Phoenix has a similar moment in the second game.).

(I haven't finished AAI2 yet)

I don't judge the game based off the puzzles themselves--it's wholly secondary in a game such as this. I'm more interested in the story and how it presents itself. They do 'dumb down' themselves in terms of theme as the series moves on, but I'm fine with that--the new games are just as fun, in my opinion.

And yeah Layton vs. Phoenix Wright should be awesome since I love both series involved

Day phases will be split into two phases.

Phase One: Investigation Phase (X days)

During this phase, they can normally vote for someone. There will be certain hidden evidence items that can be found by both town and scum that can be used for Phase Two based on performance. The person with the most votes will be the "Defendant" for Phase Two. The first person on the "Defendant" wagon will be the "Prosecutor". There is no lynching during this phase.

Phase Two: Courtroom Phase (X days)

Evidence can be used during this phase. Normal lynch mechanics apply. Defendant will receive certain powers and a "Hated" modifier for that day. Prosecutor will receive certain powers that day as well.

Normal night kill mechanics.

Anyways, this is still in planning stages but please tell me what you guys think.

I guess this is relevant.

Seems complicated. I need to find Vi's old manifesto on why Ace Attorney games that bleed too hard into the flavor fail. I'd look into the old 'Objection!' Games, they were a fairly non-frills execution of the defendant formula.

You can read the original "Objection!" (by sykedoc); you can see how badly it fell apart mechanically.

The short version of the manifesto was probably something like "if your Day game cannot be made easier than Just Lynch The Guy Already, you're probably not doing something right".

----

On topic: I still think the first game was the best one. <.< The later ones dipped really far into fanservice, to the point where the Edgeworth games were actually painful to watch as his character gets assassinated almost continuously. At least I give them credit for continuing to find new ways to twist what's essentially the same formula in every case - especially the ways they subvert the first cases
which trick you into playing the rest of the game
.

I know nothing about Dual Destinies or vs. Layton though.

Just finished the first game and loved it.

I finished Dual Destinies a few months ago, and to my surprise I found it to be actually really enjoyable. My favorite is still Trials and Tribulations, but Dual Destinies is up there as my #2.

Trials and Tribulations amd Investigations ate my favourotes. Enjoyed their plot the most, also really enjoyed Dual Destinies and think it's underrated. Just about to finish AA vs PL (been out in europe for a little while now) and anyone who enjoys either series should picl it up
Also, what is NM doing? Worst play I’ve ever seen.
I can't remember the last N_M post that wasn't bland, unimaginative and lame. Some shitposters are at least somewhat funny. You are the epitomy of the type of poster that nobody would miss if you were to suddenly disappear. You never add anything of value.
I'm guessing you haven't read the game and probably never will? Why even sign up to play?

Layton is awesome, SleepyKrew. It's basically a puzzler mystery series. I'm going to be getting PW vs. PL because of Ace Attorney, but Layton is a good puzzle series and it's really easy to pick up, too. I think people with only knowledge of one series would do okay with it.

Layton has moments where he insists there's a logical explanation for everything and it turns out to be something that's
so improbable that you wonder why you bother thinking about it
.

Or, to take the most egregious offender from the fifth game (which came with the best in-game response):

*goes through the tower to find an exact working replica of a sprawling amusement park that no one knew about even though they're in a city in the middle of a desert and it's only blocked from view by one hill on one side*
Emma: "You have GOT to be kidding me."

Also Emma and
Future Luke
are the best characters.

Spoiler: Minor Layton Spoilers
Layton gets more and more outlandish with every game. I go in to each one thinking the former can't be topped and it pulls some insane plot twist at the end.

Without playing the sixth (and hopefully final) game, I think that the third one is still the most so.

That said, the third game was also by far the most
awesome
- really what the whole series should have been - so it's forgiven.

The last two cases really make the game (AAI2) and it's definitely superior to AAI1
But it's not the best in the series by any means, yeah. Since Ace Attorney is that kind of series that continues to produce high-quality games even after over a decade of new games being released.
