I chose Birthright first

I think it was the wrong choice

It's weird actually because I thought Awakening was one of FE's weaker titles and I knew full well Birthright was exactly like Awakening and still went with it lol

It's also annoying that pairing up is a necessity in the higher difficulties (at least at my skill level) and I fucking hate that mechanic

And idk if I was just RNG screwed but my main character is by far my worst unit :(

It's a great game overall I just probably should have started with Conquest to get what I was looking for, and I might have went in with too high of expectations

FE is still my favorite game series though so everyone should play it.

I loved Awakening. Although it may have not been the strongest gameplaywise it was still solid and the character development in support conversations more than made up for it. I'm replaying it for maybe the fifth time now and still discovering new stuff about characters.

awakening was good the first time around but subsequent playthroughs got kinda dull :s although that could be because grinding on risen all day and roflstomping everything with children kinda trivializes the game.

I need to go out and buy fates soon though. I'm planning on going for Conquest first, cause I'm craving that traditional FE

The worst part about Fates is the children.

They don't make any sense in the (Admittedly already-awful) narrative. They aren't broken like in Awakening. But, not just those things, but they also completely kill the pacing of the game and give you this giant mess of units you'll never use. Like, I never felt bored doing the child paralogues in Awakening but I guess that's because the game actually tried a little to incorporate it a little and also the game was slow and meandering, it made sense you could go bumblefuck off to somewhere else if needed. Here, it's just tonally inconsistent that you can go kill bandits in Hoshido while you literally just broke through into Nohr's capital or whatnot. The fact all the missions aren't in the slightest interesting and tend to have 'Awakening Syndrome' also doesn't help.

The children themselves are actually rather interesting characters(more than the last game's, I daresay), but my god I wish I didn't play through them. It killed every bit of enthusiasm I had for finishing both games now. I guess I'll wait for Revelation next week and get to chapter 23 there, too.

Oh yeah the other thing I don't like with modern FE is the maps in the lategame are just too big and sprawling. Sometimes, scaling down the level helps a lot to mix up the gameplay experience. Paradoxically, I actually found Birthright better in this so far. Missions like Chapter 18 or 20 were a very helpful change from the usual 'giant open field' maps that the mid-lategames have had recently. Not that I don't mind those open fields, but you need to mix it up sometimes...

Fire Emblem is probably my favorite series. I've only played Fire Emblem 4 to 8 though.
I would 100% recommend 4. It may be old, but the story is really epic.

I really need to check out the newer Fire Emblems soon.

Some of Awakening's kids were brilliant (i.e. Owain and Inigo)

Awakening's kids were fine, yeah. My favorites were actually FMorgan, Noire, and Brady. In that aspect, Fates' kids are also fine personality-wise(Forrest+Soleil are my two favorites for obvious reasons), but it's their implementation that helps absolutely murder the mid-endgame pacing and just makes it Not Fun to play. I think I'm not going to do paralogues until ch 26 in Revelation just because of that.

Really like Asugi and Shigure in Fates. In awakening, I liked Inigo, Kjelle and Cynthia a lot

On the Hoshido side, Dwyer and Mitama are like the essence of me. So chill.

Selkie's cool, too. In my game, she's a dragon-fox-human hybrid because Kaden is the second best guy(I didn't know about how cool Azama was at that time, still regretting not boning that snarky old man).

Revelations is such a fucked game. My Corrin/Felicia/Azura were reaching the unpromoted level cap by the time I got any other units, it's stupid. Then they do things like give you level 7 units in chapter fucking 14. I'd heard rumors of the horror that is 'Revelations Odin', but I'm not even there and I'm already crying because all these units are so weak and simply unusable.

It's basically a less violent Game of Thrones

I'm on my second playthrough of Birthright and it's alright. Although, to be fair, I'm doing Lunatic Classic Only-Girls No-Grinding.

Idk what it is I just have no motivation to play it

Like I don't think I've played an FE where I don't care about the character this much since Shadow Dragon

Well, that's true. The plots of all three Fates routes suck major ass. The side characters are good, though.

how do you do shit like this without slamming your head into a wall

like I've been stuck at conquest's 'pots everywhere' mission forever on hard just because it's so easy to misposition one person or not be able to heal the main blocker AND keep everyone else in safe positions.

1) Birthright has nothing on Conquest.
2) Which part are you having trouble with - the ninja in the middle, or the apothecaries above them?

Once I finish the run I'm doing now I'm considering seeing if people here would be interested in a draft, probably of Conquest Normal.

Ugh I might just buy Conquest

I have no motivation to complete Birthright I don't care about any of the characters or the story

Is birthright that bad? I've got it and am swapping it with my friend who got conquest after we have played them

Conquest has the best game design by a large margin, but is also the toughest for the same reason.

Birthright is the photonegative of that statement. :/ I don't want to suggest people aren't allowed to like it, but I don't.

For completeness, a lot of people hate Revelation but playing it blind Lunatic no-grind LTC was fun. Removing any of those qualifiers may have changed my mind though. (I'm not trying to brag with that statement; Conquest Hard - which I tried first and got walloped by - is tougher than the other two routes' Lunatic modes.)

@Spiffeh - Purchasing Conquest as Birthright DLC = discount plus other freebies.

After beating no grinding Peri-solo Lunatic Revelations and Mitama-solo no grinding Lunatic Birthright I don't think either of those games holds interest in me any more.
