Is your area not organized on Discord or something similar?
I have no idea. None of my friends play, and the only group in my city that I know of is the yellow teamers that drive through to take over all the gyms every two days or so, then a bunch of random solo guys. If there's a meetup group, I don't know about it, and wouldn't know how to find it except to get lucky on Google.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

The Silph Road is probably the largest and most organized Go community out there. Have a look at their discord list and see if there's something nearby.

ur suggestion that it would be surprising if there weren't a gaming discord for his specific area strikes me as funny because pokemon go doesn't seem like the kind of game that really rewards effort to the extent that such an attitude is warranted

maybe you know where sudo lives and he's in some high density area, but when i loled that possibility hadn't immediately come to mind

The game is built around teams and cooperation. The biggest rewards come from playing in groups.

I am personally part of:

- The main Houston Silph Road Discord, which has 9200 members
- The main Sugar Land Discord (general suburb where I live), which has about 1000 members
- The Kitty Hollow Raiders Line group, dedicated to the park nearest where I live, which has 75 members

This is not unusual from my experience.

Other than raiding, though, what does being in a group really do? Even solo, taking down gyms is pretty easy. Am I supposed to be trading?

Raiding, playing with friends, trading. This game is not meant to be a solo experience. Sure, you can play some aspects by yourself, but higher tier game content you need to play with others to access.

I am also a part of my local discord, it covers most of NEPA. I'd never be able to raid without it.

In our area, servers organize meetups (particularly around Community Day), EX raids, legendary raids (v important with the demise of scanners) and trading yeah.

For example, here's what they're talking about on the Houston one right now:

trading made finishing pokedexes too easy in the mainline games
i feel like the game is already too easy while playing alone
i can't even imagine putting more effort into it besides pulling out my phone when i have to walk somewhere

Yeah, I mean, there's always more -- always hunting for that Pokemon with a better IV, hunting for shinies, hunting for the perfect gym lineup, etc.

I use the discord mostly to organize around community day or see if there are any groups doing raids near my office

even though i am part of a group, i don't look at it because i don't really want to. i'm just not that into it and associating with people is awful. nearly every time i've seen and decided to do a nearby raid that STD and I couldn't handle alone, I've stumbled into a group or an array of unrelated people who were doing it, so it works out.

The reason that one can likely assume a discord channel in any decently populated area is because Pokémon GO has become a largely social game. That has been the intent of the creators and developers since its inception, and the last two years of updates have fairly steadily pushed it towards more social interaction. It has relatively little to do with “rewarding effort” from a strategic perspective.

It’s Cogito Ergo Sum.

For Psyche’s benefit, to me the current challenge of PoGo is being able to do raids with the minimum number of players where necessary, which means building teams of the best counters and have enough rare candy and dust to power them up, which means doing daily legendary raids to get rare candy.

And I too would be really surprised if there isn’t at least one raiding group local to Sudo.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was, either. Finding them and getting involved is the hard part, though.

I'm up in Vancouver now, so I'm across a state line but I'm still closer to Portland than Tigard is.

I'm still super not into getting dicked over on raids. Just did another one, threw 12 "excellent" golden-razz curveballs, all 12 got immediately broken out of. I feel like if I do everything in my power to catch a pokemon, and get fucked because of the dice, maybe it's just not a good game.
