Games You Played in School?

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Games You Played in School?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Jul 13, 2016 5:43 am

I was just thinking about games I played as a kid in school, like Zoombinis, Museum, Midnight Rescue, and Oregon Trail. Anyone else have any others they remember from their educational games in school computer labs?

There was another one with puzzles with like 100 "bugs" in them, I think it started with a Y, but I can't remember the name, and google isn't helping either - anyone else remember that one?

We didn't get computers at my primary. At secondary we took stuff in on USBs (stuff like tanks, tank trouble, other tank related games).

Amazon Trail. The Grammar Games.
That one math game that had you bowling?

Reck, you totally have the Zoombinis app, right?

We had Zoombinis, Bugdom, Kid Pix, Oregon Trail, Math Blaster, but best of all was COIN CRITTERS

Math blaster.

To change the subject slightly, some cunning individual managed to install quake 2 on the school's network drive in HS and we were able to play it locally, as I recall. I only got to play it a couple of times, but there was something so sneaky and fun about playing it during "computer time" in whatever random class.

Also I remember one time in my first job... well, this was at a mall, a particularly dead mall, as a matter of fact. We were all working during a dead weekday and someone brought their Xbox and we played Halo all day, lol. Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane, elk.

Age of Empires was a bit old, but we played through it all the same, including the expansion pack. Because back then, every game had an expansion pack.

Age of Empires II wasn't
quite
brand new, but the expansion pack
was
.
We did play Age of Mythology and its expansion pack, but at the time it was too resource-intensive to install on the computers at school, so that was more of an at-home thing, and it didn't happen immediately, anyway.

The
main
game we played in our school? Majesty the Fantasy Kingdom Sim, especially with The Northern Expansion. I really don't get why so few people know of this game. It's a masterpiece. It is an affectionate parody of literally every fantasy trope ever, and the game
knows
it, relishing in that status. Every cliche you can think of, it has, and it is
marvelous
. Plus, if you look at all the flavor text, easter eggs, bonus material, and whatnot, you'll learn that in spite of being a cliche storm, there's actually a LOT of worldbuilding that went into the realm of Ardania.
I also love the mechanic of the game. It's like controlling a bunch of idiotic players as the dungeon master: you can vaguely point them in the right direction, but many an hour are spent frustratingly watching them waste time doing their own useless, stupid things, including many a time getting themselves killed.

Countless hours spent watching my kingdoms crumble, and I relished every minute of it. It's, quite seriously, one of the best games of all time in my opinion. Very high replayability, good music too, and plenty of laughs to be had from the oh-so-marvelously-hammy, ridiculous characters: narrator, guards, henchmen, heroes, villains alike, they all give exactly what you'd expect.

Another favorite? Civ 3. Occasionally also with expansions, but usually not.

I mean, back in about 1999-2000, I would also play all five Oregon Trail games (most commonly, 1), though again, that was largely an "at home" game more than "on computers".

The remainder of the games I played were Edutainment Games. I forget which various ones they were, but they were usually sorted by grade, up to sixth. I always wondered as a kid why there wasn't a continuation of them, into seventh and beyond, though at the time, I was only in like third grade or so. (And, yes, I could handle the games of a higher grade.)
