ITT we lament our backlog and play old games

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

In the

I made a Soft Vow to myself to actually try to reduce my backlog (not to reduce it to zero, mind you). Instead of doing yet another Binding of Isaac run, I'd try a new game for at least 2 hours. So far, it's been good.

So in here we will discuss our huge backlogs (on whatever platform) and whatever «Old Games» we're playing, recommending and/or enjoying (or not).

What are y'all playing?

Imagine an old school Zelda game, but reduced. There's 4 dungeons, Sokoban-style puzzles and no lore fluff.

It's very small, you can finish it in just a few hours. But in those hours, it's pretty and well executed.

Whether the price is right or not is an exercise for every individual to resolve. I say support small devs and well executed games.
It's good, FWIW, but not more. I got to the last boss, and was bored to actually try and beat it, so I'm dropping it.

I see nothing wrong with that. I want to discuss backlog games in whatever form people define "backlog". For some it's finishing games, for others it's starting them. Games get on and off the backlog for various reasons.

I want to discuss backlog instead of specific games for the sake of itself. Having a backlog of games is a very good problem to have, but I don't see it discussed regularly

I understand that Nier (which I have not played) is somehow in the same continuity as Drakengard?

That's not terrible. Lots f Star Wars games in there from a bundle I bought for like 5 of the games, and lots of times they added a GOTY edition after I already beat a game. I'm not going back to Arkham City GOTY.
I've only made one good post, and don't you dare accuse me of doing it again.

IIRC the first one was (supposed to be) a direct sequel to Drakengard? That was such an interesting game, but the ending was going places

Steam sales used to include bundles. You'd get these bundles because it had 2-3 games you wanted to play at the price of one full game, but also came with like 6-10 games you'd never heard of.
You also used to not be able to reject gifts, so games like Bad Rats and Hatoful Boyfriend used to get joke-gifted a lot.

Also Humble Bundle.

Spoiler: Andy recommends Islanders
Elegant one-click city builder

ISLANDERS
is a very simple game with a clear and well-defined goal: score as many points as possible. In order to do so, you just have to select a building and choose exactly where to put it (as long as there's enough free space)

Some buildings benefit from having other buildings near it (for instance, having tilled land close to a mill). Others benefit from isolation, or closeness to resources. The main action is simple (placing a building) but thinking what's the *best* placement is a good exercise to the brain, to the extent that this game could almost be classified as a puzzler (and I only hesitate to call it so because there's no single, unique, "best" solution, which lends this game a good degree of replayability)

Since the buildings are "earned" in waves, planning ahead is a must. You can't just put everything together, or you will find that Big Scoring plays become impossible, or that negative synergies arise. It pays to have this in mind.

I particularly like the end result, regardless of score. I have saved some screenshots of my "organic" towns because they make for beautiful desktop / phone wallpapers. Few games offer this specific product and I enjoy the game that gives more than just a few hours of play. I recommend getting at full price.

Image
Spoiler: Andy recommends AYIM And Yet It Moves... if you can run it
A simple idea from yesteryear

This game might look and seem dated today, but one must remember that it is from several years ago (why, look at the requirements and it still lists Windows Vista). It was amazing to play a nice platformer where *everything* can rotate---and even more, it was amazing to play it for free before lots of current industry Bull were established.

My only gripe is that I haven't been able to run it under Win10 so far. I miss it.

Image
Spoiler: Andy does not recommend Fieldrunners
Good variety of gamemodes, and little more

Fieldrunners
is a simple Tower Defense based on building the actual path where most of the enemies will traverse.

The good: It's a simple game that gets to the point right away.

The bad: it offers little customization and depth (particularly compared to the alternatives on Steam)

My opinion: it's good if you're going for length rather than depth of game. If you're looking for deeper strategy, I'd recommend looking up Gemcraft. Fieldrunners is a good starter TD, great for learning the ropes of the genre and not fuzzing around with many options. I don't recommend it, not because it's bad---because it's not---but because to me, there's better alternatives out there.

I did. She likes watching me play it, but, I admittedly also play several games where there is no real win state.

The other choice was also the FF7 remake which I kind of got burned out on after about 2 weeks, I'll eventually go back and finish it. The other options I'm nowhere near the end of.
