Ultimate Videogame Topic 3: The Next Generation

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Pokemon?

I just feel like I play it with a set of rules that I must follow and I can't ever play it loosely. Like my pokemon have to be in my party in order of level and then if their level is tied, by order of HP, once they level up I shift the order around so it makes sense again, etc. I just feel on the glimpses of LPs and Nuzlockes I've seen people are able to play more freely while I've been playing this way since I got Pokemon Yellow. It frustrates me.

As a kid, I used to just do whatever. I would level them up more or less evenly and change the order if one was leveling too quickly, but I didn't pay too much attention. That bit me in the ass in the late game. Always used a fire starter, though.

A little later, I kept to a rough formula for my party's composition, since it worked for all of the required HMs and TMs and for passing the endgame. I also started sorting Pokémon by level and number of EXP needed for the next level. I would also make a point of never using any Berries or potions, and I caught literally everything with Poké Balls (except Safari). The worst part, though, was trying to get every single item and every single available Pokémon, which eventually became neither realistic nor fun, particularly when they started distributing critters through store events and Pokémon Dream World.

I've been trying to play more loosely with Alpha Sapphire (because doing it otherwise meant I wasn't ever going to start). The tendency to want specific types for my party is still there, and I think I still want to stick to Poké Balls only, but it's been nicer than usual to not care so much.

Did you use that email and password combination anywhere else? Take time to change them all, even if they're for accounts you don't plan on using again. Also, if you did, then there's a chance that they were compromised in one or more data breaches. You can check here, but that may not be a complete list.

Turn on two-factor authentication for everything that matters.

I've been playing through
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
because having
Radiant Historia
remastered for the 3DS is like a dream come true.

Things I like so far:
  • Friendly Mode is amazing. I like challenging combat as much as the next person, but I don't have time or, frankly, patience for grinding anymore, and nowadays it's the main reason for me to drop a game. Being able to skip battles by whacking enemies on the map and still getting loot and XP is pretty great, and I don't mind shortening what is easily a 40-hour game to significantly less than that.
  • Minor characters that have available quests now have a quest marker above them, so one doesn't have to go all over the city talking to every random person trying to get all of the quests.
  • The voices, with exception of Nemesia, are decent thus far, which is a major step over
    Bravely Default
. I low-key enjoy listening to the person voicing Stocke.
  • Pretty game is still pretty, and the gorgeous soundtrack definitely sounds better than it did on the DS.
Things I do not like so far:
  • Nemesia. RPGfan liked the character, so there must be a redeeming quality somewhere, but I
    hated
her entrance. Good god. She could have screamed "I'm an anime trope", and there wouldn't have been a lick of difference. There were immediate regrets playing on Perfect mode.
  • The portraits for the DS release were beautiful. The ones for the 3DS release are more conventional. Dislike. There's DLC for turning on classic portraits, but any new characters would have the new portraits for obvious reasons, so it didn't make sense to play that way.
  • There's a DLC for a swimwear scenario? Dislike, angry emoji, etc. I appreciate it not being part of the game proper, but I feel kind of ill about the fact that it exists and that this re-release plays into so many classic anime tropes.
TL;DR - I'm keeping my DS version, thanks.

In other news, I'm also playing through
Bravely Default
again because it's been more than three years since I last played it. I continue to loathe
Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
, but I might as well finish it.
