Oh this is a thing..

DAMN. is a future classic to be honest. He could've had DNA on loop for an hour and it would still be a future classic.

Sadly I've played it out but I haven't played out Cash Carti. Magnolia is going to have the summer on smash.

Way better than I expected. I mean I liked some of the shit he had out around the Broke Boi and Holyfield era but I didn't find him better than Uzi at the time and finding out he hangs out with Ian Connor almost did it for me.

It's so addicting and rides in the whip. With every listen it gets better. My only fault is that some of the leaks that surfaced before it dropped weren't on it. Call Up The Troops, Mansion, and No Limit would've made this tape of the summer for me. Still might be though because Magnolia is greatness. Same with Half & Half but no one seems to have love for that track.

I don't know how you can say that about the beat selection when the synths in Location take you to another world. Boring beats don't do that.

Also if you're looking for substance from Carti, you're doing it wrong.

Nah I haven't heard it. What's his best work? I liked when Rocky sampled him on Canal St.

Curren$y and Wiz take me back to my smoking days man. Pilot Talk 1 & 2, Covert Coup, Kush & OJ, Taylor Allderdice, and of course How Fly are perfect sesh music.

You gotta give it a proper listen when you get the chance. Car Service, Rollin' Up, S.D.L, and The Planes all go.

I need more like Sodium and The Return of the Pimp :)

On the real though, I had believed in Yachty and he just let me down man. The album is so bad. Despite the few summer bops it has, it's just overall unbearable. It blows my mind how long it is but how uneventful it feels. Feels like he went for a slow nocturnal love song vibe too much and all those are forgettable. This whole album is forgettable besides the singles and like one or two others.

Shame to because Lil Boat was actually pretty great but I knew, the second I finished my first listen, that he wasn't going to be able to ever recreate something like it ever again.

It was like the most perfect tape that someone with his skill level could possibly make.

That an old track right? Only been bumping Watch My Back since I think that style suits him more. Poker Face especially. That track usually gets 3 repeats minimum for me when it comes on

BFK and Cold Day in Hell are definitely essential because they actually have some of his best fully fledged songs. I'll give you MEOFG though.

You Only Live 2wice is easily top 10 from the genre this year to be honest.

I swear I use to wild out back in 2010 and 2011. I used to smoke and back then How Fly and K&OJ was like 80% of what I listened to.

Anything produced by Clams Casino and Harry Fraud is usually good too.

His stuff is tremendously positive and he's a big time philanthropist, donating millions to public schools and shit.

Like I can understand being like "I don't really listen to Chance" but, I mean like...disliking the guy is impossible.
Oh yeah as a person he's great. You have to be one coldhearted mofo to not like what he's done for Chicago.

Alright motherfuckers let's talk about it
It took some real fucking balls for him to swing this far from that Summertime '06 sound and from anything he'd done before outside of features, and I think we're low on artists willing to be this adventurous in hip-hop right now. On top of all that experimental ingenuity, though, sits an amazing album.

The production is consistently stunning, his bars are as self-aware as ever, and the hooks are more captivating than his other projects. I think Big Fish Theory will not only go down as his best but also a future classic. It's easily the most progressive hip-hop album since Yeezus.

Summertime 06 and BFT have completely different vibes from Shyne Coldchain vol 1 and 2 so I don't see a point in comparing them actually

He just makes good music. All the way.
Bar for bar SVCC 1 is probably his best. He held nothing back on that.

The crazy thing is that he's only 23. He's literally my age so I'm sure he's still growing mentally so I can't wait to see what he drops at like 27 or 28.

There's a lot wrong with this opinion and I'm not sure where to really start

1. Yeezus isn't really that progressive
2. This is not that progressive either, but it's still good
3. Atrocity Exibition is better than both, and actually has a sound that could be considered ""progressive""
Man what the hell are you smoking? Yeezus is extremely progressive and it's baffling to me that are still people in this world who don't understand the magnitude of that album. Nobody in mainstream hip-hop has every done anything like it before. They're definitely a lot of people in the underground that have had similar styles, but they didn't do it like Ye did.

It's wasn't just simply the sound that made it so unique. It was the overall approach. A lot of Yeezus was raw samples. On Site, Black Skinhead, Blood On The Leaves and Bound 2 notably. This combination of simple construction, industrial and electric influences, and honest and identifiable lyrics is what arguably makes it the most progressive album of all time.

Let's also not forget the influence. After Yeezus, a lot of artists took a lot of stabs at the conventional and risky release. Beyoncé with self-titled or Kendrick with To Pimp A Butterfly comes to mind. Bon Iver, Travis Scott, and a lot of the production of modern trap like Young Thug, Future, and Migos have also been greatly impacted by the album. Experimental, dark production is coming up in the hip-hop world the same way Drake and Kid Cudi came up during the emo-rap wave of 808s that's still relevant today.

Anyway I could go on, because I haven't scratched the surface of the surface yet but I won't because I'm not sure if you're just trolling me or worth the time.

--

I know a lot of people like Atrocity Exhibition but it's not as progressive and forward thinking as Big Fish Theory. It's just an experimental hip hop album with really unconventional beats. Big Fish Theory is an album that took an entirely different existing genre of music and applied it to hip-hop.

Wouldn't say big fish is stricly a Uk garage/rap mashup. There's lots of house and detroit techno influences which which don't usually show up that often in rap

Honestly most of the bars that people have a problem with are the bars that go to show how messed up the persona he's putting forth is. The fame and frustration had him fucked up. People think they're just bad or stupid bars, but when you put them into the context of the album as a whole, it makes sense why a person like Ye on Yeezus would say shit like that.

Hold My Liqour is a drunk, self destructive rant about love lost. Bound 2 is about optimism and resolution in a hilariously fucked up relationship. Through these lenses, the lines have a role.

He's alright just not for me. It's not just his fans though. It's his music too for various people I've talked to.

Shame he blew up off of Uzi's flow and the Drake beef and still will probably become the next Vic Mensa.

And if my children knew, I don't even know what I would do
If they ain't look at me the same
I would prolly die with all the shame
"You did what with who?"
What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate?
"You risked that for Blue?"
If I wasn't a superhero in your face
My heart breaks for the day I had to explain my mistakes
And the mask goes away and Santa Claus is fake

Damn Hov :(

4:44 is fantastic guys. Easily the best thing Hov has put out in at least a decade.

Disappointed at no Adnis though. Maybe that song will just be exclusive to the film.

I find the Blueprint series mediocre and American Gangster was bad.

I haven't heard much about 17 but the consensus from other messaging boards I frequent is that if you're big fan of folk music, you won't like it and that X is embarassing himself :dead:

As for Luv is Rage 2, it's probably better man. The entire album just screams innovative. The way he threw Hov's theme on 444+222 was awesome. The Way Life Goes transcends the whole album and Neon Guts is an excellent step forward for Uzi putting together a complete song with someone like Pharrell and holding his own. He really separated himself from his XXL freshman class even more with this.

In post 603, Killthestory wrote:i dont like the first three songs to luv is rage 2. 4th one is decent. 5th is okay. 6th is something i could jam to kind of. 444+222 is a little better the more i listen to it. i think i was actually jamming to it for a second actually but i skipped it after it stopped being cool. feelings mutual is eh. neon guts bumps lol. the one after that isnt even memorable.

oh shit this unfazed thing came on. i like the beginning but uzi really needs to do something with this. lets see. takes waaaaaaaay too long for him to come in and his flow is the same as the other songs but hes doing a little better.

alright pretty mami my last since i need to get an impression on this x album. i like the chorus and beat, and i like how his voice fades into it in the chorus. i like how it plays out but sounds eerily similar to lots of other songs on the album. it's just way better executed. i especially like where it plays his voice as the beat. cool shit.
It'll grow on you. Trust me.

I also think you have to look at things differently here as well. I think the way you should judge this album should be in comparison to the standards set by all the new rappers in Uzi's class from Yachty to 21 to Kodak and others. You shouldn't listen to this album and expect Kanye or Kendrick level artistry, or Jay level lyrical ability, no. Times have changed and so has the soundscape of hip-hop and also what's acceptable in it. Now, with all of that in mind, when you look around at Uzi's peers and what their recent outputs have been quality wise, and judge Luv is Rage 2 based off of that, he honestly has just released a classic album that will be remembered as one of the best debuts of this current sound in hip-hop.

Just finished 17. 22 minutes I'll never get back..

This album was fucking terrible, like probably the worst one I've heard all year, and I'm trying to look at it in the most unbiased way possible. It just feels like a collection of half-assed songs, lyrics than are not only surface level, but just exceptionally bad and very "woe is me" - the way he paints his depression comes off as attention seeking and cringe, and a whole lot of fake deep. The whole Instagram suicide thing makes a lot of sense now, because this album is about as deep and meaningful as that shit was. I don't know how anyone could be a fan of someone and be pleased with something as sparse and incomplete as this.

Maybe it might be an age thing.

I don't know how old you are but I know KTS and Wheme are between the ages of 12 and 16. Teens who feel depressed or like outcasts tend to gravitate towards albums like this.

New age in terms of influence?

Finally Rich
Yeezus

I'd say these two albums helped dramatically shape 80% percent of hip-hop currently.

In terms of quality, could go on for days. I've been on a Mac Miller binge recently and I think he's got a good case for top 15 from this decade.

My response is going to be a mess but, in all honesty, I think Revival is the worst album of the decade. I remember listening to it the day it came out while outside, doing work in the blistering cold. Usually when I feel like I'm freezing half to death, I'm quite stoic, but that day was different, as I was constantly asking myself "What the fuck is going on?” as I was listening to the album.

I am still flabbergasted after listening to it, and it's been hard for me to form a coherent thought since the last second of Arose played. And I usually don't hate albums man. I instead just kinda shrug bad albums off and keep it moving but I found all 77 minutes and 39 seconds of this album to be fucking miserable.

The production is fucking terrible, as it sounds rank amateurish at best, and painfully oblivious to what is pleasant at worst. While some of the production in the pop tracks is serviceable, I found the beats for Bad Husband, Chloraseptic, Framed, and Untouchable to be a far cry from the quality production he used to once house on his albums. By and far, however, the worst beat is Believe. It’s sparseness during the verses is ineffective, its attempt to be booming during the chorus is weak at best, and I thought my headphones were dying while listening.

Mixing is another major issue. This album often did not feel full, and I think part of it was how it was mixed. Nothing really hits hard, the beats lack the lushness of his previous albums, and generally, I found myself occasionally checking my headphones to make sure the chord wasn't loose.

The bigger problems, however, stem from Eminem himself and probably Rick Rubin as well. This album is a hodge podge of callbacks to Eminem's edgy days in the late 90s, his political leanings of the early 2000s, but all under the veil of his newfound pop-sound stemming from Recovery. With MMLP2, he seemed to at least harken some of his sound back to the era from which it stemmed. Revival, however, forces the subject matter and general philosophy to update to 2017 Eminem’s punchy, fucking atrocious staccato flow. He even adopts some of the flows of the modern era, and fails to show that there is any reason to consider him better than his contemporaries. The album does not sound horrible just because the production and mixing is shit. It sounds horrible because he sounds uncomfortable, and all of the songs sound forced, not at ease like the rest of his catalog.

And the album certainly covers the same ground as the rest of his catalog, which is why the last three tracks didn't redeem the album for me like they have for others. Sure, I get that he does go out his way to apologize to Hailie and Kim which is cool. However, this album covers the same shit every other album has. Last time, he apologized to him Mom, this time, to the other women in his life. It's inevitable growth. Unlike 4:44, which found Hov making confessions and revelations out of nowhere, Eminem does what he should, quite frankly, be doing at this age anyway. Owning up to his shit and keeping it moving.

Yet, a big problem arises from this concept. Eminem has never really been forced to grow up. We have always reveled in his immaturity and made it symbolic of Eminem. As such, his serious moments became more appreciated, and his goofiness became expected. But on Revival, it becomes unbearable. One track, he's apologizing to the women in his life and threatening to take political action. On the next track, he's rapping the same shit about harming women he did in both 2009 and 1999. He doesn't sound comfortable trying to grow on this album, as his political commentary sounds like a University freshman on Twitter, and so it gets sandwiched in between his most immature offerings yet.

The immaturity is also reflected in the wordplay, which has already been discussed too heavily by critics for me to go over again, but I will say, absolutely no one, not even in White america, wanted a 2017 version of Ass Like That over a fucking "I Love Rock and Roll" sample. He managed to revive all the head-scratching moments of his career on the album, and yet make them even worse than the previous incarnations. And then there’s him basically admitting he needs a Mom on the song with P!NK – the album reeks of an immaturity that, honestly, feels uncomfortable, downright headache-inducing, in 2017.

The final thing I will say is this – there were three albums I kept thinking about while listening to Revival. The first was 4:44. He had the chance to pull off beautiful growth and transformation as an artists and a person, but didn’t. He didn’t have to follow Hov’s blueprint, but hell, Revival is the exact opposite of 4:44. The second was Syre. Jaden says “No one look at my dab.” on George Jeff. At least he wasn’t smelling his pits while dabbing, unlike the much older Eminem. I realized, after he spat that shitty line, that I enjoyed a Jaden Smith album more than an Eminem album. And the third album I thought about was Camp. Camp got shitted on for corny punchlines and surface-level discourse on race in America, among other things. I’ve always loved Camp, and after listening to Revival, I love Camp even more. At least with Camp, we knew Gambino had room to grow, as an artist and as a human being, and so Camp became a testament to who he was and where he was in life at the time. Revival reminds us that Em is the kid who never grew up, and it shows in his music.

It’s sad that Em’s career will go out on such a whimper, but fuck this album was bad.

He just doesn’t have the “raw talent” like his fans says he does. Every single line he writes is the most childish cringeworthy bullshit, there's no depth, there's no cleverness, his vocal ability isn't anything to write home about, the music he goes over is extremely basic and generic. There's just no hidden layer, he's never going to put it all together and come through with something great. This is just his level.

Yeah y’all gotta understand that there is a difference between someone not liking an artist or a band and someone going out of their way to hate on and dismiss an artist or a band.

I don’t think I’ve done the latter with X.
