This is a simple game inspired by the likes of Countdown!, anagrams, scrabble...

The idea of the game is simple: every round I will post 10 random letters, and you have to find as many words as you can using these letters. If the random letters generated do not contain between 3 and 6 vowels, I repeat the randomization until they do. (These ratios of consonants to vowels may be discussed in this thread and I will consider changing them if necessary)

You will score points for every word you find based on how long it is (1 point per character), with double points awarded for your longest unique word ( a word only you find - nobody else does).

Here are the rules (very important to maintain integrity and organization):

1. ALL words must be submitted to me by PM only. Under no circumstances are you to post words in the thread. The thread will be used for mod posts, general discussion, or discussion of previous rounds. You may only post words if discussing a previous round. Posting words here only hurts you and helps other people.

2. No sign ups required. You may choose to play any round and skip any round.

3. Do not look up words or use anagram solvers or any other tools that give you an unfair advantage. Play for fun and friendly competition. I will tell you by PM if you submitted any words that will be rejected. You will have until deadline to submit alternatives.

4. I will only accept a maximum of 10 words per player per round. If you submit more I will only count the first 10. This means if you find more than 10 you should submit your best words first (longest/lesser known).

5. Only English words will be accepted. No proper nouns. If something is a proper noun but is also a common word it will be accepted. (For example 'December' wouldn't count, but 'may' would). There may be instances where it isn't clear if a word passes this rule. Ask me if you are unsure.

6. If there is any controversy over a word I will be using The Cambridge Dictionary as the official reference.

7. I will accept both British and American spellings. However, in the case that both spellings can be found in the same round I will only accept one of them. They will also count as duplicates for scoring purposes. So if one player only submits the British spelling and one player only submits the American spelling both of them will only receive 1 point per character.

8. Rules may change but never without an announcement in thread.

Unfortunately English is a complicated and constantly evolving language. I picked one source as the official dictionary for simplicity and to avoid dictionary 'politics'. Some sources do have it as a word.

I might change the source I honestly just picked it because it was the first one I thought of.

Yes I noticed that this had a much bigger effect in round 2 than round 1.
I tried to think of different ways to maybe deal with it.

You guys are the players. Is it fun because it adds an element beyond the words or does it feel bad?

I know I still want the basic idea of unique words to matter and also give lesser knowledgeable players to have a chance at scoring moderately.

Your third option is interesting.

One of the options I came up with is to multiply the total score by 1.x where x is the average length of words submitted. So say you have a few 6, 5, and 4 letter words average would be around 5 so your score is multipied by 1.5. The difference between 1.4 multiplier and 1.5 multiplier wouldn't be huge but it will be significant that it rewards longer words.Howeved the scoring would get messy with decimals.

Maybe we can do it where your longest unique word gets doubled. That way if a player has no unique words they get no bonus. If a player gets a short unique word they get a small bonus. If a player gets a long unique word they get a large bonus. I think this might be the best option. What do y'all think?

To clarify, checking words in the dictionary, or using anagram solvers or any other tools to help you breaks rule number 2. It goes against the spirit of the game. This is just a fun competition to test your skill. We operate on the honor system.

Two things:

Scoring for round 3 will be changed on a trial basis.
If somebody has unique words only their longest unique word will get double points. All other words will get single points. If this ends up being a good way to score it will be how I score future rounds.

Some of you are concerned with having their words rejected when they are not allowed to look up tgeir words in the dictionary. To alleviate their concerns I have 2 proposals. Please vote on which you want me to follow.

1. I check your word in multiple dictionaries that I trust instead of just 1. That may cover a wider range of words.

2. When you submit your words I tell you if any will be rejected so you can submit alternatives before deadline. That way only if you submit too late your words will be rejected otherwise all words will pretty much be guaranteed.

Good catch. Don't know how I missed that twice.

I subtracted 1 from insanity's score for the unique word bonus. But since it's my fault for not rejecting the word I'll keep insanity's score and just add 5 to everyone else's score.
