Wonder what changed
People seem to boil Fate down to aspects like this and think that's all there was to him.

"A player like Fate did this and he was fine, so why is it bad now that others do it too?".

The problem with that line of thinking is that there was always more to Fate than just his gimmick. He had a charm* about him even outside of his gimmick. Not to mention, he actually knew what he was doing with it. He had clear idea behind each and every post he made--there was an intent behind his style, and the intent was directly motivated by his goals, as town, as scum.

...The people who look at Fate forget that though. They copied his technique's appearance without copying the underlying methodology. And that's where things went wrong. Fate had depth. Fate had meaning. Fate may have started a trend, but he actually knew what he was doing when he was using it. The people following his style, by and large, did not. They saw flashy play and thought, "ooh, this looks like a good idea!" and tried it themselves, only to find it less successful than Fate because they simply didn't understand that Fate was more than the sum of his parts. You can't copy what he did, because what he did had nuances to it which were something you had to personally experience to appreciate.

*One key difference between Fate and imitators, for instance. Fate made posts which were entertaining to others. Most imitators make posts which are entertaining to themselves. And while a post entertaining to oneself may hold entertainment value to another, it is not made with the intention to entertain others. Fate always did, in his own unique way. He made people laugh; it was part of his personality.

  1. Don't push the pace when it doesn't need to be pushed.
If you don't let off the gas, you'll drive the game off the cliff.
  2. Don't forget: you're always speaking to everyone.
Every personal conflict you resolve is observed by a chorus of silent judgment, each waiting for their turn to let it out.
  3. Let them let it out.
Give people room to speak, and you'll get so much more out of them than if you strangle each other with words.
  4. Make your point.
You're trying to get your message in the mix. It doesn't have to be an illegible wallpost - cutting, editing and formatting go a long way. Practice them.
You know the funniest/saddest thing is, this works wonderfully as good theory advice even outside of plans for a geriatric game. Legit, someone using this strategy (especially as scum) is on the fast-path to victory.

It does, but it was never a blacklist. Just a list of players who had a noted trend of posting a LOT, to raise awareness of them more or less. It was "kids these days". It lists them as that, nothing more. It says nothing about what to do about "kids these days". It says nothing about stopping them from playing in games with geriatric individuals. So there was never a blacklist.

Isoing the mod, I got the feeling the mod was rather geriatric as well, modding in a style which was circa 2006-2009.

...While that level of moderation is
acceptable
(I don't think Lord Gurgi can be badly faulted for how he ran the game even if you do assign him
some
blame), it's not what I think a geriatric game needs for the players to succeed.

People make frequent note of how the site meta regarding playstyle has changed over the years, but what they also seem to forget is that
modding
style has changed over the years as well. The modding style which worked back in that era I don't think is well-suited for modding a game in the current era. Least of all a game utilizing special mechanics, which geriatric games do.

The current meta is very vulnerable to prod dodging lurking.
An easy solution to this is to have a rule preventing prod dodges from resetting the prod meter. A game being geriatric should be no excuse to go two/three days without posting. Quite the opposite, in fact; you only have ten posts per day so if you don't use them, you lose them. Geriatric games don't need to require you to post literally every day, but they do require you to actually post at a reasonable rate.

This has ALWAYS been the case even back in the day. If you didn't post every day, that was okay. But if you made it a habit to basically semi-intentionally only post as infrequently as you could get away with...no shit you weren't gonna do well. This was true back then, and is still true now in every game, even geriatric ones. You need to post to win. Geriatric games just afford a more "reasonable" posting rate.

I can safely say I have never seen them playing in the same game together and because anecdotal evidence is clearly all we need to call something fact, that must make it true!

Also Lynch All Liars.

LAL is an abbreviation used for both because both are policies people felt were worth enforcing:
If a player lurked, lynch them;
If a player was caught in a lie, lynch them.

It was in fact inspired by Geriatric rules. It's a mini theme, so if you want to play it, then go here and /in mastina or /in succinct (I believe either would be counted).
