It's really the only social deduction game I find acceptable. I *kind* of like resistance depending on player group because it's mafia-lite, but I really am not a fan of the genre. I DID like werewords quite a bit tho and also think it's superior to mafia.
Traitor games are okay but I've never found one that I liked for an extended period (dead of winter is better without a traitor, shadows is cool until you figure out the trick, BSG is too long and quite a few games have been ruined an hour in by "what's a cylon?", dark moon just sucks).
I think the hidden movement 1 vs all games are pretty fun and super tense if you guys are into that sort of thing.
But ever group is different. Definitely look at all the games suggested but also go on board game geek and use the tags to find games similar to what your group already likes.don't be afraid to do some independent research. MOST games will have YouTube tutorials/playthroughs/explanations that will help you get a feel for it.
Oh, I'm not a fan (because I think the game is ONLY fun with 6), but you guys might also like Captain Sonar.Sometimes a sandwich is just a sandwich.- Faraday

Today in a game of spirit island I got to play Cast Down into the Briny Deep as Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island, destroying 1/3 of the board and doing 30 fear because we were playing against level 5 england so of course there was shit everywhere that we were never going to kill.
God this game.
Also played with a scenario but we slightly cheated at it. Though we determined in postgame itprobablywouldn't have changed things too much.- xRECKONERx

SMERSH is super fun. It's less of a game and more of an excuse to get drunk, but it's hilarious none the less. A fixed version of Arabian Nights that doesn't suck.In post 3236, xRECKONERx wrote:UT and I just got back from a board game run.

I've only played that game online and it felt so clunky and time wasting and the client was shit, so I should probably giev that game another chance with a physical copyIn post 3238, Untrod Tripod wrote:Through the ages was SO GOODYes my Lord, but questions are dangerous, for they have answers.

Played The Shipwreck Arcana last night, and it was pretty great. It's a sharp game. It's fairly Hanabi-esque in that it's cooperative with hidden information. It's got some deduction to it. Not social deduction, but actual honest to god just deduction of clues. It's definitely going on my wishlist.Instagram: BoneSpellArts

fun - today, me/Ythan/UT/Gammagooey/hubby all playedBattle for Rokugan.
the Game of Thrones board game was one of my top five favorite games EVER, but it was sooooo long and complicated
this game takes the same fun elements from Game of Thrones, and just simplifies it.
no more "muster units separately and then play orders on them" -- your march orders are your units, so it removes an entire complicated phase of the game
no more supply limits constantly making you double check all your units to see if you're breaking anything
it removes so much of the fiddly bits. and it's SUPER simple and streamlined due to it... which lets them introduce some more fun mechanics like secret objectives, territory control bonuses, etc.
anyway i really love this game. i have no reason to ever have the Game of Thrones board game hit the table again? other than for flavor purposes
the one downside is that this game isn't designed with the "force people to make political alliances" thing in mind. you can still do that, of course -- but the mechanics and map design don't NECESSITATE it. there are also units that you can drop in somewhere even if you're not adjacent, which also sort of destroys the need for alliance buildinggreen shirt thursdays- BBmolla

It is the most obvious successor to GOT imo
there are other games that do the area control mechanics better
but this feels like they took at look at GOT (which is like 7 years old at this point holy shit) and said "huh, this game feels dated" and streamlined a lot and dropped the theme
my biggest issue with it is that upon reflection, the clans you play as all feel too similar. they all have the same pool of 26 tokens, but each clan gets one special token that only they can use, and then they all have a minor passive ability
the variance comes in drawing combat tokens each round. you don't know when you're going to draw your "big" moves, so each round feels fresh and different. which removes the analysis paralysis that came from GOT, where you want to plan 10 moves outgreen shirt thursdays- inte

i watched battle for rokugan being played at a local game store. the only thing that i think i might have trouble intuiting my next move because the tokens
if somehow they made like figs, even simple ones, it would drive up the cost a ton but i think would be worth it for meShowW(eed)/L: 420/2

Just won TTA against the hard bots without ever upgrading production
Impact of Industry was one of the endgame scoring events, even"Don’t buy a dozen eggs if you just want a hardboiled egg. Don’t buy a head of lettuce if you just want a salad. Don’t buy eggs and lettuce if you want egg salad because those are not the right ingredients." -Julius Bloop- xRECKONERx

So Hanging Gardens + Michelangelo + St. Peter's Basilica is a well established combo to get mondo points early. The main problem with this combo is that everyone wants to beat the everloving shit out of you. But I managed to secure Wave of Nationalism and use it from last place for six free ore on military units. From there, it's like...you can't do much but once you have the combo down and are minting 15 culture turn, all you need to do is be out of range for easy aggressions. I just prioritized urban growth / efficient upgrades / patriotism, and I could often go to 2nd/3rd row for them since I had 5 civils and fuck-all to do. It also helped that I could totally neglect food because Moses got me most of the pop I needed early. In fact, I actually had -1 food production for 3 turns...I just popped a Reserves for food and ate the reserves until I could get Selective Breeding and Efficient Upgrade in to it.
So the tl;dr is that Moses + Hanging Gardens is strong, and then Hanging Gardens + Michelangelo + St. Peters Basilica is strong. From there, I was lucky enough to get Legion and smart enough to get Swordsmen as my first tech so I couldn't be immediately dumpstered. The strategy also exploits what I think is the only big flaw of the TTA bots - they tend to overvalue colonization a bit, so if a lot of colonies come up they're not as able to punish greedy strategies. But yeah, the combo can be enough to win if you get an era I tactic and at least one Era 1 military unit. (Even with a sword only tactic, doing it with Warriors usually means you run out of growth potential and get smashed)."Don’t buy a dozen eggs if you just want a hardboiled egg. Don’t buy a head of lettuce if you just want a salad. Don’t buy eggs and lettuce if you want egg salad because those are not the right ingredients." -Julius Bloop - hitogoroshi
