I second having someone in charge of approving/fixing open setups, we have tons of great suggestions and fixes but there’s no clear system to remove/add setups.

If there were an official Open Setup Review group I’d join. I’m too flaky to open mod but I can always give a minute to look at setups.

We have a lot of people willing to do shit, if someone could just take lead and coordinate we could do seriously improve this site very quickly.

I also believe there is a lot of power in giving people “titles” even if they’re not publicly shown, but just being like “x I am designating you an official wiki editor” or whatever. I think the issue now is people feel powerless, let’s give people power.

I would thoroughly enjoy a thread dedicated to this.

Example: Does a standardized doctor protect a kill or all kills?

I’ve always been one for consistency, I see a lot of roles that work different and would like to set a standard, even if just for the normal queue.

For the example above we could also just rename a doctor who stops all kills a Medic.

But I’m going off topic

Yeah I had no idea it existed until 2 minutes ago

Edit: I just applied, I can at the very least get that discussion going.

Standardized roles are particularly important for roles such as Voyeur.

LlamaFluff tried to put a system in place to prevent less than balanced setups from getting put into place but it's sort of fallen apart.

I would fight harder for it but I'm not sure if people are more interested in balanced setups or new setups.

But the "approved open setups" system would prevent stuff like the above.

Experimental queue isn't an awful idea, but a Open Setup Review Group could also solve the issue of checking setups before they're run.

If you look at those contests I'm sure there are plenty of willing folks.

I feel like if the Open Setup Review Group had a place where they can actually test setups, that would be helpful
the only real solution for this would be to try to run a Monday Night Open Setup Testnight in Discord or some shit

My fear would be the sort of thing where if it's too frequent the appeal is lost and players stop coming

Like if we had a weekly marathon queue I imagine it'd be less crowded, yknow.

Someone brought up fun, we should probably go through and remove ones that people don’t feel are fun?

The part where the system fails is the playtesting of new setups for fun/balance and I have yet to see a solid solution for that.

It wouldn’t be a terrible idea to have a sort of retired approved setups for old setups that are balanced and fine but set aside to allow newer setups to run

Like with Magic the Gathering and card games how sets get rotated out sort of thing

So stuff that the site isn’t as keen on, like multi ball, can be run in theory but is not presented to new mods.

Something like that

I’ll see if I can spend some quarantine time going through open setups

In post 304, Alyssa The Lamb wrote:The open setup challenges are a good way to create new open setups to potentially throw into the mix, but the problem with them (and why I've personally stopped trying to create any for it in the past half a year) is because I've felt like it has sort of warped to be "how can we make x and y work at all, when x and y are very limiting factors" rather than "how do we take an interesting concept and make a good setup out of it"

I think the general quality of open game setups is pretty low and we have a tool to use to help with that problem, but its hard to do so right now
Is there a way we can make rules to fix this for the contests

Cause like literally the format is the way it is because I made a suggestion and based it off of what I’d seen for hero contests for Dota (lol). I feel it’s sort of morphed over time, my initial idea was more making different roles work sort of thing.

If we can have more specified rules for these contests maybe they’d be more beneficial?

Or maybe a new system where a group comes up with the guidelines for next month?

My point is if that’s not working we can fix it, the whole point was to generate new setups and if it’s failing us there we should change it
