I agree w this. If they lose to Spain, which I'd expect them to then them trying to break down Morocco and Iran could prove difficult.

They've a difficult enough group and unless they win it probably play Brazil in the last 16. Don't really see them going very far, despite knockibg out a pretty average Italy side.

Australia are probably the worst team in the group looking at the squads, though Denmark are hit and miss and rely on Eriksen a lot. I haven't seen enough of Peru play to know much other than "they're a dark horse" for some (which holds no meaning anymore, since everyone is!)

But neither are the Dutch. Or USA.
I mean, neither of these teams are very good either.

The Dutch didn't even make the last euros. Where 24 teams qualified.

It should give Australia some hope though, as the Czechs aren't awful - they're just nowhere near what they were a decade ago. (As evidenced by coming third behind Northern Ireland)

In post 89, BROseidon wrote:Uruguay individually looked really good, but their play in the final third was very lacking in creativity until the end of the game (and they won on a set piece, which isn't that weird with how much more athletic/tall their CB pairing was that Egypt)

They'll coast out of this group in first, but they need to get their shit together for the knockout round
egypt defended pretty well and made themselves hard to break down, tbf.

but yeah, i don't really know if uruguay played well individually either? like suarez def should have scored/didn't look really good and i thought the uruguay midfield had terrible final ball even when they did get decent positions.

they'll probably play better against teams not designed to prevent them from playing, though.

belgium and uruguay haven't played anyone good yet, tbf.

belgium beat a second string england team with their second string. not convinced they wouldn't still serial choke against brazil or someone

I agree except I think Belgium have had equally as good talent previously and not amounted to much. I hope they do well, just don't think they've proven they have solved their previous faults. (Also I don't think Martinez knows how to organize a defense.. ever)

Giroud will probably be trying to take the brunt of this i think (and is well capable of doing so). It should be interesting tho as France are one of the few teams that have quite a few options to switch it up, in the event of players playing poorly. The argentinian paper defense definitely made them look good, though.

I think it'll be an interesting game. Hope Cavani is fit, as he was so great last game.

The English defense is definitely no where near as good, individually or collectively. Stones and Maguire are...well obviously not as good as Godin or Gimenez (Stones didn't even start for City at the end of the season) and Kyle Walker is a very good full back.

France have a decent defense, but did concede a few against an Argentina side struggling for goals and belgium are managed by Martinez who has historically never been able to set up a team defensively (and they play wingers as wing backs). The Belgian back three are real good individually though, it's just the wing backs I'd worry about. Brazil are strong defensively, tho I agree there.

I think both as individuals and and the way they set up helps the Uruguay defense - they're an incredibly strong unit and are supported amazingly by their midfield players. I think if you try to play through the centre they'll shut you down. I think the best chance France have is if they can get Griezmann or Mbappe running down the wings with the help of the fullbacks. Uruguay back four play fairly narrow.

Although I disagree with Bro that france can't get at them, especially since they look a bit more cohesive as a unit with Giroud there. The Uruguay defense aren'tunbeatable, they showed that against Portugal where an individual error cost them a goal. Given their high energy play and the energy factor required for tournament football a mental lapse isn't impossible.

In post 201, PJ. wrote:They don't play a defensive playstyle and ask their backs to cover more ground than they would for club, and that hurts the unit collective, but Kompany, Alderweireld, and Vertonghen are 3 of the very best Centre backs in the world.

@Faraday, I feel that the starting line up isn't better but when they switch to 4 back with dier, stone, and the two full backs they are stronger, but Godin probably makes the difference, so I'll give them 4th best.
Ya i dont disagree with anything here about them individually being great but i think a defensive system has as much to do with how well a team defends.

I guess thats what happens when your best attacking outlet is injured and you play against a good attack.

France looking strong. Amazing save by loris at the end of the first half too.

I dont think belgium necessarily fit with the other three there - individually theyre also really strong. England are probably a good example if they were to get to the final though.

Portugese team other than him are mostly not top tier talent, though. I dont necessarily thinl tjeir tactics let them down as opposed to maybe getting unlucky against a disciplined and strong team.
But yeah i get your point. Argentina's forward line exemplifies it as do germany this year.
