that's a fair point—I see it as an entirely endearing trait, something unique and positive that he's done (even if the title but never got off the ground, I see trying to create a tool to better the site as an intrinsically positive thing), but I can absolutely see how it would be taken in a negative light as well.

"I don't get this title because it's a reference to Mish Mash/LSG and I don't go there" is a very bad reason to anti-nom a title

it says something true and essential about Postie's place in the community. that fact justifies the title.

nth pew pew

even if you weren't at Toronto Meet, Chickadee's knowledge and enthusiasm for laser tag was a thing she'd talked about extensively elsewhere, so the "this is about one specific event" argument isn't even valid (note that I immediately responded in thread that she'd definitely be in for laser tag before she even saw the discussion about it—I saw the words "laser tag" and immediately knew that would be one of her top priorities because of how much it had been talked about).

I just checked and this was actually in the Toronto discord, not the thread, but here's a transcript:

Maruchan 08/29/2018
LASERTQG
Maruchan 08/29/2018
If anyone will lasertag eith me
Maruchan 08/29/2018
I haven't played in forever and I wanna
Nessie 08/29/2018
I'd go with u for lazer tag
zedzee 08/29/2018
@chickadee will laser tag

discord doesn't give precise transcripts, but that all happened within about a minute -- even before I committed to doing it myself, I was 100% sure Chickadee would do it from the moment laser tag was even brought up. "Chickadee really, really loves laser tag" was a known thing even before the meet.

the sentiment that it would be nice to include an art reference is a fair one, but imo the assertion that laser tag on its own isn't enough to justify a title is a dumb and incorrect one to me

anyway,

nominate Maruchan for passportent

that's a portmanteau of passport and portent, referring to her leaving her passport at home and having to wait several hours before getting it back. Maruchan's passport was the single most discussed topic at the entire meet and involved staged photos to make us believe that she had been detained by the military and that Majiffy got detained at the border. I'd be surprised if there was ever more then an hour that passed without someone making a passport joke.

I guess this one will probably get rejected on the same basis as pew pew but it's still something that absolutely deserves a title regardless of whatever arbitrary standards there are.

I'm fine with a lot of the suggestions folks have made including QuickDraw, but I'd really like to know DRK's thoughts on some of these since I guess her opinion is the one we have to have swayed

every title is something where you'd need to be involved in a specific part of the community to understand it. the argument of "only the dozens of people who have read or posted in Chickadee's GTKAS thread, the dozenish people who are all extremely active in the Discord server where she's talked about it, and the people who were at this meet know about this aspect of who Chickadee is, therefore it's not relevant enough for a title" is a bad argument that fundamentally ignores how good titles come into existence

"I didn't know this thing about a person" isn't a sign that a title is bad.

DRK you're characterizing this as a title that only the people who did laser tag at Toronto Meet would understand, and that is absolutely, 100% factually incorrect. like I specifically quoted the bit in the Discord leading up to the meet where someone brought up laser tag and I
immediately
responded that Chickadee would definitely want to be in for that without any hesitation or even asking her about it. how could I have done that if it was something only people who did laser tag that day at the meet would understand?

here's my proposal: we alternate between two week periods. the first week of the first period, anyone can point out any other user who they think deserves to have a title (or deserves to have their current title reevaluated and possibly changed to something more current); during the second week of the first period, the top 3 or so people from the first week are voted on, and a winner is chosen. the 2 people who are in the top 3 but aren't #1 can't be voted on for the next, say, 3 months, so that the thread doesn't just stagnantly vote on the same people. during the second period, an open discussion of what would be a good title for that person happens -- realistically, there'll've already been discussion of potential titles for people before now, but this allows for more time for people to discuss it, and the nature of the discussion will obviously shift now that it's "hey, we're giving X person a title, what's a good title for them?" then, at the end of the second period, as long as that person accepts it, they get the title with the strongest consensus.

you'd still have a title fairy around (someone who, y'know, is actually active and participates) to ensure that, like, titles intended to insult the person who has the title are immediately knocked down, and there'd still be the option to just nominate someone directly when a really truly perfect title reveals itself, but this system would ensure that people who deserve titles actually get them. people will whine about how a few titles get through that don't perfectly encapsulate all aspects of a person's personality, but those people are boring and wrong.

titles are a measure of which members of our community have contributed to that community by carving out a unique space and a clear, memorable, and enjoyable identity. the process of giving them out should reflect that.
