Sign-up pace are hard to speed up, but if we had things like chat mafia (or the marathon subforum with perhaps limits on how often someone can make a post?), we could have better user retention even when sign-up times are so bad.
I really believe that it's that time gap between signing-up and starting a game that we lose loads of people who could themselves bring in other people.
I'm really interested in the whole automation thing and there's really little limit to how much time I'd volunteer to help out with that. I don't think it's that big of a deal for attracting people, but anything that accelerates the engagement of new users with the site seems like a great idea to me.- Psyche

Three separate links to UCP, Inbox, and "view my posts" which really should all be on a sub-page or in a collapsing menu. The FAQ link is actually a link to "rarely asked questions". There's a text-size widget when every modern browser has a zoom function built in.

fwiw I'm all for statistics being automated, even if it was a simple "enter who is mafia, town, and third party and who won" for each game, then having a player's profile show win, loss records for each type. The issue is I'm not sure who's going to code that, and getting universal adoption would require some concerted effort beyond just the coding.
If we just standardized - even really loosely! - certain posts that the moderator makes, it would be so easy to scrape this stuff on a semi-regular basis.- Psyche

anyway i have most of the parts ready for a particular approach to the automod stuff you're interested in
but it's still a little mysterious what the site will be like after it's upgraded, so i've moved on to other things for the moment
but it's a guarantee that we can achieve much of what sites like mafiauniverse offer- Psyche

this thread is too glum for me imo
so much has happened and will happen since it’s started and i think that effort is accellerating with each passing day
i’m really excited about this challenge and have no doubt that we’ll be able to make the quality of life changes necessary to keep this forum healthy and active for years to come
i don’t want to sound...megalomaniacal, but right now i just feel it, sorry!
have more free time and less distraction than i ever had and probably ever will
and now that i have a truly worthy votecounter, nothing that needs to be done here seems even marginally hard to do
all of these problems are going to dissolve away
it’s just a matter of time and resolve — and we’ve got both!- Psyche

i think the modbot we've been chatting about may actually support mobile use
you'll set it up on your computer, expose your localtunnel with a single command line statement, and receive a url that you can access anywhere to a page w/ an interface that controls the bot
that url won't work well for many users, but for modding you don't really need that, right?- Psyche

You know before I thought that Modbot would be something to help mods run their games, but maybe something more autonomous would suit shorter, presumably more numerous games like marathons and blitzes?
there'd still be someone behind the wheels in case of trouble, but maybe that someone would be the queue's listmod or a team of people- Psyche

which games go into the queue perhaps needs to be more directly driven by player interest, rather than by whichever vanity projects the moderator base are currently committed to
games with shorter deadlines is a good example of this: players want them, but mods are consistently choosing to run longer games instead
due to the mismatch, the community suffers
in general, though, it's hard to tell what the playerbase's interests are, because 1) many of them are latent, they lack the experience/knowhow necessary to articulate what they want, 2) the potential playerbase could have different preferences than our current, actual playerbase, and 3) i forgot #3
for that reason, it's important to just react when clear, well-defined preferences do become obvious and maybe to design processes for determining further
From there, it may be important to strongarm mods into responding to player interests. That can minimally involve letting mods know how the queue should change to reflect player interests and encouraging to design their setups around that, and more strongly could involve giving preferences to setups that seem player interest-driven or even more controversially requiring setups to match those features.
what im ultimately saying is that maybe with a little top-down action driven by attention to potential player interests, the supply of games might be molded to better match what our potential playerbase would actually like to play- Psyche

i dont think there's an ideal way to do itIn post 1015, chamber wrote:Do you have specific proposals about what being more responsive would look like? How do you detect what the player base wants?
maybe regular postgame feedback surveys where the last question solicits open-ended ideas about how game distribution should change
if someone submits an un-implemented idea that isn't plainly crazy, add a specific question about it to the form, and maybe bring up the idea in MD too
i think this process would've captured and measured interest in shorter games, and is at least substantially likely to capture other preferences that might be lurking about as well
though it certainly has some big limitations (eg that thing about potential vs actual playerbase)
maybe one way to ameliorate this a little would be to emphasize the feedback of newer players vs older- Psyche

sounds like you need to catch up on the current convo
"quality" is a subjective concept that depends on the interests of the player base - actual and potential
the question is how to alter site administration so that the games in queue are more reliably the games our actual/potential player base want to play- Psyche
