There's one obvious advantage to MM pairing: town are less likely to actually lynch scum, as fewer possible lynch choices will lead to a scum death. It does, however, indeed hurt scum if the loner is lynched or (obviously) if scum is somehow lynched anyway.

Isn't (MT)(MT)(MT)(T) just strictly better for scum than (MM)(MT)(TT)(T)? Unless I've missed something, any sequence of choices by town and scum in the latter that leads to scum winning has an analogous sequence in the former that also leads to scum winning. Likewise, (MT)(MT)(TT)(M) is strictly better for scum than (MM)(TT)(TT)(M), on the same reasoning.

I think this only applies in the case where there's exactly 1 townie more than scum.

When there are 3 townies more than scum, the lynch of a TT pair is an instant win for scum, and the lynch of an MT pair isn't, so in that situation it's not obvious that MM pairs are a bad idea.

Oh right. Not an instant win, but scum still move two steps closer to their win condition rather than one.
