World Cup begins tomorrow. I have to figure out how much I want to try to watch these games that start at 3am or 5am for me. Tomorrow's fortunately is just at 8am, but Saturday's 3am France match will be hard to justify.
I wonder how they'll handle the altitude of Mexico city and to a lesser extent Denver. It's not a problem really if it's consistent through the group, but given Mexico has 3 host cities and only 10 matches, it's likely Mexico city only gets 1 round of a group, which makes that game pretty different than the other games in Houston or whatever.
apparently the 48-team format right now is 16 groups of 3, so each group only has 3 games to play. Top two advance to a 32-team knockout. I actually kind of like that.
Well, given the way it'll operate with 16 groups of 3 with the top two advancing as sort of a half-qualification round half-world cup round. Theoretically it reduces the last-game blues of groups, although with a major risk that playing for a draw is beneficial for a good number of teams (apparently it's been floated that the last game of groups has to end in a victor).
It's 23% of the 211 teams, which is a lot particularly given a lot of those teams are from tiny areas. But it does give FIFA a better shot at getting India and/or China, reduces the odds of some major teams getting out (CONMEBOL has 6 spots out of 10 members!).

better than whatever the hell they did with the Euro
Funny enough, the Euro format is the same one that was used for previous World Cups.

Also travel time is going to be a bitch! Like, split country games is alright is some cases like Korea/Japan, but like, if a team has a game in Mexico and the next one in Canada it's really going to hinder them, unlike a team who was already in Canada amd doesn't have to fly up! Or if they have a game in the east thn the west (or vice versa) timezones will screw them up!
This should be very interesting.
The flights from New York to Los Angeles are likely longer than the flights from Mexico to Canada. Mexico City to Montreal is a 5 hour flight. It obviously would take a long time if teams were flying commercial and had to connect, but they'll charter planes and go direct.
I believe all countries will be, but at least in the original proposal for increasing teams, auto-qualification will take away from their region. For Mexico and the US that's likely not going to have taken away a spot (although as we've seen this year it's not impossible!) from another team, but Canada might. Still, even if you thought that all 3 hosting teams wouldn't have qualified, the same number of teams as compared to the 32 team version will qualify from CONCAAF.
