I am actually pretty happy with how the deck performed tonight all things considered:

vs UWR Control: It was a basic countermagic battle. G1 he had a pretty scary Assemble the Legion about to kill me but between AEtherling blocking + Barter in Blood killing two of them + lol top deck a Crypt Incursion to gain 18, I think it ended up okay. He scooped to Crypt Incursion. G2 I got Jace online after he tapped out for AEtherling, then got Tamiyo online the next turn by negating his counterspell. Milled him out shortly after with doubledrownyard + Jace 0.

vs NUWEN'S DOS RAKIS: Beat down G1 with Aetherling. Lost G2 to a stupid stupid stupid misplay where I had an Evil Twin Reckoner out on the board and didn't redirect the damage to her PITHING NEEDLE'D FALKENRATH ARISTOCRAT and just got beat down. G3 I mulled to 5 and still only found one land then drew four nonlands in a row - variance is OP. I just scooped after I top decked yet another Augur of Bolas.

vs the Brian Kibler RG deck: G1 was over before I even had 5 mana out on the field. G2 I milled him. G3 I missed my fourth land drop twice and then was just dead because I couldn't cast my damned Barter in Blood.

vs Junk Reaminator: G1 was easy as I beat him down with an AEtherling. Oh, by the way, this was some 7 year old kid who took 35 MINUTES to play G1 and his dad was sitting right beside him the whole time. G2 I just scooped after 10 minutes so we could hopefully have enough time to go to G3, then G3 went to turns and if I had LITERALLY ONE MORE TURN, I had Jace live on the field with Drownyard too and he only had 40-ish cards in his deck so I could've milled him (especially since I cast Crypt Incursion with 10 creatures in his library). It actually kinda pissed me off... I lost because this little kid took too long and I can't really be a dick and go JUDGE HE'S PLAYING SLOW but I still got fucked over because of it. Then once it's all said and done his Dad makes him drop anyway because "it's past your bedtime and I told your mother we'd be home". Then why not just fucking give me the win instead of fucking me over for your stupid son's fucking inability to decide SHOULD I PLAY VOICE OF RESURGENCE OR AN ARBOR ELF.

I do think this deck has more issues with aggro than I realized but I haven't been able to get a clear mind about it yet because I keep getting fucked by variance... I never get mana flooded, I only get mana screwed WHEN I'M RUNNING 25 LANDS

Psychic Strike is so good though

IMO Rewind isn't nearly as good as you want it to be because it's only good because you can untap and use the mana for something else but it's not exactly gaining you an advantage... and in a control matchup it ends up just being a 4 mana counterspell sitting on the stack

Did fine in the just for fun queue; did a 2-man to see how the deck does and I won G1, lost G2 very narrowly (fucking 9 infect counters and I topdecked 4 forests in a row, no pump spells), G3 I got stomped by Tarmogoyf & Spell Snare, good lord

I'm probably more interested in the casual environment rather than trying to be amazing, I'm more interested in the craft, metagame, and strategy than in making "my ultimate deck". I.e. I'm more interested in draft than anything else.

This is how I was when I first started... try drafting. It's casual, nobody has an innate advantage from having cards, and it teaches you the fundamentals on what makes a good deck.

Cool deal. Gimme a bit and I'll post up a budget-friendly Sliver list that you could put together mostly by trading away some of your stuff + throwing in a few bucks.

I'd probably run something like this:

4x Predatory Sliver
4x Manaweft Sliver
4x Sentinal Sliver

4x Bonescythe Sliver
4x Blur Sliver
2x Megantic Sliver
2x Thorncaster Sliver

Most of those are cheap as hell... the rare slivers might cost you $1 each or something, but that's the basis for a decent slivers deck. You have some options for the noncreature spells to run... I'd say farseek, Boros Charm, and a couple Hive Stirrings are good places to start. Could even run Gruul War Chant to give a fieldwide buff.

Lands are expensive if you want to do it right, but you can easily just run Guildgates/Basic Land instead (unless you have access to the shocklands). The "good" version of the sliver deck runs Domri Rade, but he's at like $26 right now, so not exactly a cheap investment.

I love that deck! I took it to the first ever FNM after DGM released and did pretty well. It's really fun a "combo"-ish, but it's not a true combo deck. Unfortunately, there aren't any of those in Standard right now (well, Unexpected Results was around for a little bit).

The actual cheapest "good" deck you can play right now is RDW, I'm pretty sure. Although... my UB deck was cheap as hell to build.

...the point is that 4 sets are rotating out, and we're only getting 1 set rotating in. The cards we have in RTR block + M14 are going to form the backbone for any deck, so brewing decks based off of that that will only change out a couple of cards for new ones is fine. That list there won't change much at all with the THS stuff... maybe 1-2 of the cards will go in exchange for THS stuff, but it won't change that much.

I don't think it's asinine. I get your points, though. I just feel like, if you look at the previous sets, the big standard decks at first are all built heavily upon the previous sets with only one or two new cards shining through. The UWR lists when RTR came out still relied on Snaps/Tamiyo/Terminus/Entreat/Think Twice/Pillar as their big players, with cameo appearances by Azorius Charm & Supreme Verdict. Hell, Jund was literally just M13/ISD block cards featuring Mizzium Mortars. Zombies added Rakdos Cackler, and not much else. I guess Jace AOT saw a lot of play, but yeah, the core lists were still heavily based in old cards with only a sprinkle of new stuff. That's how I'm expecting it to go again.

I don't think deckbuilding is as simple as "Cut the rotating cards and look for replacements." You're going to be brewing in a new environment, and the interactions and meta are going to be different. Simply saying "Okay, this is sorta similar, so use it to replace" isn't going to work out very well.

I'm pretty sure the basic archetypes aren't going to suddenly get an overhaul because of Theros cards.

I don't think when RTR was coming in, anyone went, "Well shit, I'd better not put Think Twice and Dissipate and Snapcaster in my control list because who knows what format shattering control stuff is coming in!" No, you knew you'd be playing those cards because they were the backbone of control.

Same goes for aggro. I don't actually think the mono red lists changed that much besides the loss of Shrine of Burning Rage, and people knew "Okay, Stromkirk Noble and Hellrider are going to be fantastic in this archetype so let's use them." Sure, Ash Zealot & Rakdos Cackler got printed, that only strengthened the archetype, it didn't fuck up anything pre-rotation.

"Build around me" cards will crop up, I'm sure, but those aren't the "typical" archetypes. When it comes to simple archetypal decks like RDW or UWx control or GW midrange, those types of decks will always be there and it's not like everyone will suddenly be playing Block Constructed in Standard. The cards that lend themselves to their respective archetypes now will still be good in those archetypes.

You can easily, with a new account, accumulate enough value to keep playing for free. A new player phantom draft is 1 new player ticket + 1 regular ticket, which means you're spending $1 at most to draft. If you win, you get a pack of M14, which is worth 3 tix from bots. Rinse, repeat.

The effect is neat, don't get me wrong. But she can't protect herself, the second ability is unreliable, and the ultimate may as well not exist. It's good for inevitability in the control match-up, but I just don't see it being good enough consistently enough to bother. Every once in a while you'll mill the exact right creature, come back around on your turn, and blow out your opponent with it, but it's certainly not something you'll see happen every match. If you want a good creature to drop, might I suggest running a creature in that slot instead?

People seem to underestimate how powerful it is just to get rid of shit your opponent can't play. Especially in control matchups -- a hand with one or two counterspells is disruptive enough already, but also being able to remove threats from the game?

"Unreliable" is basically saying "magic is a game of random chance and randomness is unreliable" which, I guess, is true. But so is drawing an answer to anything, or drawing a threat. I don't get the critique.

Holding up counter mana is fine, but eventually, you'll have to do something to advance the game state. IE, if you counterspell their T2 play, have 3 mana up with another removal spell in hand, I see no problem in playing out the PW, letting them stick a creature, then blowing up their creature with removal later.

Blue is just so goddamn strong in M14. Like, I'm rarely ever sad to get passed a blue card, unless it is the vanilla 2/1 or Tome Scour (though I did do well in a MTGO draft a few weeks back running nothing but counterspells/millstone/tome scour/Traumatize).

It's mostly a surprise counter. Like, countering something with it early probably isn't that great, but being able to play out a threat and still leave U up to get a Sphinx's Revelation or something is a big game. I don't know that I'd play it in dedicated control, though- it seems like more of a tempo card.

I really like the scry lands. They're not bonkers or anything but when you're going to need dual fixing, they're just really useful guildgates. Scry is so much fun, I'm glad it's back. Also, this deck is insanely good with the hand destruction it has, and then if anything gets through, you just Doom Blade or Ultimate Price or Hero's Downfall it. Erebos is pretty good here, especially in mirror-ish matches. The "opponents can't gain life" effect has been extremely relevant, although I've never gotten Erebos online as an actual creature, I'm always at like four devotion.

I saw a lot of "suit up the little dude and smash in over and over" in the games I played. That's how I lost my final match, and I had fucking Elspeth out on the board too.

I went Esper at the prerelease, because I had the promo Shipbreaker Kraken + another Shipbreaker Kraken + Elspeth, and my black cards were decent (Sip of Hemlock, the 4 mana "give two dudes +1/+1 and lifelink" combat trick, Shipwreck Singer [that card is actually nuts], Read the Bones, the black Ordeal). I ended up taking 6th place with a 4-2 finish. One loss was to Fate, so I wasn't too mad. The last loss was against a guy who ran four colors and a bunch of dual casting cost cards and just got perfect mana every time... which, when you have unknown shores and two travelers amulets and the elk that fetches two basic lands, I guess you can do that.

It's definitely not quite as slow as I thought... but I did notice most games were basically "who can get to six mana and play the bigger bomb first".

Prophet is an absolute beating. I'm unsure about the one-of Stolen Identity, it hasn't done a whole lot for me so far. But seriously, flashing in Armada Wurm with Trostani on the field is amazing... being able to populate your tokens every turn then untap every turn is amazing... flashing in Zegana is amazing. And, usually, with this ramp, I'm able to Mystic Genesis their 5cmc (I've hit Stormbreath Dragon, Kalonian Hydra, and Aurelia with my playtests so far) which is huge on its own. The only deck I had problems with was the super fast white weenie/boros aggro deck, simply because Soldier of the Pantheon protection from multicolored/giving them life every time I cast multicolored is pretty damn good. I'd also imagine I might have issues with Burning Earth, but I think I can get around it with 11 basics + 4 Caryatids.

I considered running Plasm Capture but this deck isn't really trying to ramp any more than it already is, especially since it's flash. I suppose I could just cut genesis for straight up counterspells.

It's partly because I don't have the Voices, and it's partly because I don't really think Voice fits in this deck? The only thing I want to be playing on turn two is a Caryatid to ramp into bigger threats, there's really no room or time to play Voice.

Predation is 2G to destroy target creature with flying and gain two life, so one more mana for two life? Seems okay (might cut that altogether, not like fliers are super prevalent except for Desecration Demon)

Finally, Nivmagis Elemental looks really intriguing now that I am looking at it. If I am thinking correctly (and please correct me if I am wrong), I can cast a cheap instant, get the heroic trigger(s), and if the instant isn't all that great or necessary (of if my opponent just plain tries to counter it), I can exile it to give the Elemental two +1/+1 counters. This can be even more ridiculous if I can get a Cipher spell going (because every time a Ciphered creature connects, the Cipher spell is cast, which can again be exiled to the Elemental). It could actually turn into a real powerhouse and can be cast off of any mana source in the deck.

Currently looking at trying to run this Bant Control list off the start of BNG standard. In testing, Kiora is pretty insane. It's very easy to get her to five, I think, with how much protection she offers.

Running Caryatids + Verdict is kinda awkward, but the potential for a T3 Kiora is worth it IMO. This is kind of tap out control where I want to be playing things on my turn.

It's only slightly different from UW Control, but Kiora is just good enough to warrant it. Simic Charm has been an all star... it can serve as a tempo play with the bounce, but the mode I'm most impressed with is the hexproof mode. It can save my ass more often than not. It also can hit Stormbreath Dragon and Blood Baron, which Azorius Charm cannot.

There's been literally nothing released besides a name and a few pieces of art. At least wait until you see mechanics before you abandon ship. (also, play Modern not Standard if it actually does suck. Modern's better anyway)

The name is enough. Theros was boring, flavor-wise, and WARLORDS ON HORSES looks LESS appealing than the Theros teasers.

In general though, I think the game is just BLEGH. Theros was a shitty block which means I need to wait at least another year and a half before I play again... and if the new block is shitty too then it's at least 2.5 years. Boooo.

Modern is too expensive for entry, plus honestly I think between Netrunner & Hearthstone, all of my CCG itches have been scratched.

Prophet is an absolute beating. I'm unsure about the one-of Stolen Identity, it hasn't done a whole lot for me so far. But seriously, flashing in Armada Wurm with Trostani on the field is amazing... being able to populate your tokens every turn then untap every turn is amazing... flashing in Zegana is amazing. And, usually, with this ramp, I'm able to Mystic Genesis their 5cmc (I've hit Stormbreath Dragon, Kalonian Hydra, and Aurelia with my playtests so far) which is huge on its own.
