If you're clicking this without watching GSL vs the World, it's your own fault considering the thread hasn't been bumped for four months.
So, Serral (Finland) just won a GSL title in a world tournament in a semi finals filled with Koreans. Nothing about this is all that different from Neeb's Kespa run (2016), except that the format for the Kespa cup was different and led to 6 koreans being "killed", 1 by Neeb, compared to 2 foreigners "killed" by Koreans.
People are calling him the best player in the world right now and with Scarlett's earlier WCS win against a Korean this year, there's some mumbling of removing the region lock / discrimination against Koreans.
I feel like Serral's opponents disrespected him, in particular Innovation didn't seem to do much research on him (the runbys Serral did as soon as Inno left his base is basically his trademark), Dark refusing to scout Serral, and after Serral spent so much time researching ZvT (preparing for Maru in the finals), Stats beat Maru but refused to play late against Serral, who had shown proficiency in macro play in the tournament, and instead of playing his defensive Protoss style, rushed Serral several times in the Bo7 finals, finding mixed success. This is something I find flawed coming out of Serral's victory over Has in the WCS Valencia finals, where Has cheesed Serral every game but got blown to pieces. (Though Classic and other Protoss players like Parting seem to like Has' style so this could be seen as a meta shift). The failure to scout the all in in game 7 is similar disrespect- 6 adepts for 11 drones, not checking what was coming out of the larva or scouting the "defense force" of roaches that never appeared and pathed into fog of war, effectively becoming invisible to Stats.
IMO while Serral is "the best" right now it's a tenuous title. Aligulac rates him as #1, but would predict Maru destroying him in a best of series. Maru himself doubles his runner up in the Korean circuit, Classic, in points. Maru didn't seem like his heart was in his semi final appearance against Stats, making serious blunders and had negative proactivity in the showmatch against Serral. When GSL resumes at the group of 16 tomorrow (Wednesday Korea) I think we'll know for sure who is the best in the world.
