Let see...hive mind, able to connect with your mind but it works in both directions. Maybe I could establish a rudimentary form of communication with them, but I need to relax and open my mind which is not so easy in these conditions..."

"Maybe you are right and they are not sentient but I feel I should try anyway. Perhaps they can show me an image or transmit any information on a near settlement. This might prove useful"

Who am I? Difficult question especially since they only seem to understand a small fraction of our language. But they are able to communicate so I'm thinking...it might be easier for them to understand images and emotions. Try to open my mind and let them see I mean no harm for anyone on this planet and I wouldn't harm them either if given a choice. Also, how much knowing about other....hmm, beings similar to us would help us.

"Non-sentient is such an Earthling concept. I mean they do have a hive mind, pretty sure they have a limited understanding of verbal language and yes, I'm aware they are hungry and their first instinct is to consume us, but they did feel we've been trying to connect with them....they were even interested in whom we are. Not that crazy to think they might be convinced to look for food elsewhere or even show us some images of the local population if they feel we aren't trying to harm them or their habitat "

"Non-sentient beings you said? They just showed me a wonderful image- a beautiful lock mechanism. Pretty advanced form of communication and it tells me they might be way better organised that you might think. To bad I have no idea what the locket mechanism means and the problem is I feel they are no longer in the chat mood especially since I'm pretty sure they don't trust me yet. So, I will take a risk here trying to continue the connection....but I think I will"

"I feel so tired....while you are piloting this ship, you don't mind if I'm taking a nap, right? Can't help you and if something goes wrong....it won't matter anyway"

The knock wakes me up. I look around, see we are all still alive and then hear the voice outside. So, I ask the first question that comes through my mind

"Are you from Earth or are you born here?"

[Selynee]

"Oh, a settler" I mumble to myself, a bit disappointed.

"Elementi? Can you tell us more about them? I believe I was pretty close to establish a meaningful connection with them. Are there native populations living around here?". After a few seconds I add "And, of course, you should tell us why you've called us here..."

[Selynee]

"I'm not saying their instincts didn't tell us we are food. Plus that they probably have a very different understanding of their environment and thus us- I think it might be that they've evolved to see the stimuli in the environment as either "food" or "danger" and simply ignore neutral ones. But you can't deny they posses a form of communication and they shown a certain interest in us"

After a few seconds I add

"if we are ever going to successfully integrate and live our lives here....we should try to find a way to coexist with other beings"

"Well, I guess it could be a worse mission...Like stealing precious artefacts " After a second, I add "Anyway, we can't sleep in that ship. It is very uncomfortable. While you are trying to repair it, I can try to build a campfire and a small shelter outside...Suppose it is safe given that the settler could come here."

I observe our employer seems to be a bit...annoyed by me. Which can only be bad news for my employment and I can't leave the job right now with no resources and no plan B. So, I say:

"Umm....earlier my intentions might have been misunderstood. I was just very eager to meet native people from thus planet....ohh, and I still believe in the possibility of coexistence with the Elementi but no worries- won't put anyone in this team at risk"

Mumble to myself "Well, at least I've tried". If everything is safe here, I should go to this town...I wonder how life is here. But no zappers for me.

"Everyone so interested in weapons. How about bringing some meat? As a gift....better than bringing tasers"

"There is no need to vote anyone to be turned into meat today, Inferno. Maybe later but for the moment I know we can afford a bit of meat as a welcome gift. But don't worry, if the situation ever gets dire enough....we can vote...."

Well, I take some meat and head out on my own. I'll make my own decisions.

"I suppose I could go to the town see if they sell some small living animal...but I'd spend too much time and I have no idea if small animals are even sold here. I'll take my chance and go without a welcome gift....though it's not the most polite decision"

[Selynee]

"Yeah. lets go. The native flora and fauna awaits us. Oh, and that ancient temple"

[Selynee]

Hmm, maybe it would be a good idea to see first if we are alone. I'll try to connect again with.....whoever might be around. If there is any non-humans around"

"Hey, I wonder if the people who build this ancient temple left any archaeological artifacts that could tell us more about their daily lives. And seeing how I have some free time..."
