In post 33, Parama wrote:Philippines – K-pop is the most confusing genre to me because it just sounds like… early 2010’s American pop. All of it. And I mean this is. It’s fine. Kind of bland. I don’t really have much to say about this either. (AVERAGE)
#NotAllKpop! XD

I mean, a lot of it sounds like Mid 90s boybands, and the girl groups can be really divergent!

I look forward to listening to this one!

But please tell me with a straight face that my last submission sounded early 2010s to you lmao

Thanks you, Song Contest, for helping me procrastinate :)

Iceland: Zeal & Ardor - You Ain't Coming Back
Starting out okay, reminds me of something but I'm not sure what.
Hmm...it's a little more noise and a little less musical that I like. Feels more feedbacky that it needs to be. Like if they toned down the effects and crisped up the instruments it might be decent, but no.

Lebanon: Bella Morte - Fall No More
Oooo twilight zone meets 8-bit intro! Sweet!
This would make an amazing credit song for a darker anime or video game! I like it!

USA: Alkaline Trio - Throw Me To The Lions
I'm way less into rock than I used to be, but this is a good start. Alt-rock(?) is still something I can get into pretty well and this is a fun one!
I bobbed along and the drum break is really nice. I think I like that it always feels like it's moving forward, unlike a lot of submissions which stagnate after the first 2 minutes.

Hungary: Counting Crows - Amy Hit the Atmosphere
Oooo Counting Crows! Oh, and it's in 3/4 time <3
Man, I feel this song! Fantastic choice! Top Tier! Literally so up my alley :)
Great story, smooth yet emotional, best time signature. Just, Yes.

Lithuania: Arctic Monkeys - Old Yellow Bricks
Fun, but a little more of the new style of rock I'm less attuned with. It has a nice feel and decent drive it's just...
I dunno it's missing a something to grab me. Def not bad though.

Liechtenstein: Art Garfunkel - Waters of March
So, when this song started I thought I clicked the Bill Wurtz one by accident...I don't know if that's a compliment of not.
I was actually talking with a friend this week about how Art Garfunkel had like, no success after Paul Simon split with him.
I think if this song were a 2012 Youtube song with fun animation it would have done well, but it's such a weird feel for 1975!
This was fun.

Sudan: Bill Wurtz - And the Day Goes On
Ya okay I always forget how great Bill Wurtz is until I see another video! Great song, fun animation, good messages, reminded me to turn on my notification bell for him, etc.

Central African Republic: Franz Ferdinand - 40'
So far we've had Queen's '39 and Franz Ferdidand's 40'. How long until we get to Summer '69 and, even better, 1989? :P
FF is good and I like this. It does have the drag issue I get with a lot of songs though. Maybe that's my fault not the songs' now that I think about it.

Tanzania: Pomplamoose - A Bad Mashup
Oh man, Pomplamoose is awesome!
This is a great mashup no matter what they tell you XD
When they threw in Bad Boys I was so won over <3

Slovenia: Turisas - Venetoi! - Prasinoi!
Yes! A Trumpet Fanfare is how all epic songs should start!
I don't know what video game this is from but it's definitely something of the sort! Fantastic!
Like, this is the battle music I want when riding in with my army to fave the Romans! =D
And the Metal vocals add to it rather than detracting for once! Holy shit this might take top spot :O
Oh man, and the breakdown at the end is so like, victor of the Colosseum! Fucking YES!

Macau: Mitski - First Love / Late Spring
What a drastic change from the last song :P
This is great though! The lilting vocal start is nice, the organs are a really nice effect, and wow, it's so sad yet lovely!

Egypt: Toadies - Sweetness
I like the beginning but immediately braced myself for a raucous build-up to just Rock Noise. I was pleasantly surprised when it remained more musical and I liked the key change at the minute and a half mark! Not something I'd listen to purposely but I appreciate the musicality, especially where it was unexpected :)
It's still a bit much for me and probably not getting points but I thought I'd mention the good qualities here.

Belarus: The Paper Chase - What I'd Be Without Me
Mysterious feel to the opening. Oh, yeah, this is gonna be a murdery song! Let's see where they go with it!
Okay, will this was an interesting choice for direction. It achieves its feel so good work, but it doesn't make for a mice song to listen to. Once again, as an art piece, well done. But I can't get into it.
Like it's the first song I've had to skip halfway through because it hurt tbh.

Burkina Faso: Pongo - Tambulaya
Oh ya, something fun to dance to! :)
Somehow I think I'm more into this song that the people in the video XD They all look so sad and bored :P

Norway: boy pablo - Losing You
Okay, putting aside the song for a minute...THIS VIDEO! XD
They have like, 90s idgaf style sense, they are weirdly perched, and they literally can't play properly because they can't open their eyes wide enough because of the sun!
When the Bassist has his solo he has to actually get up to be in frame and the poor guy stuck at the bottom the whole time is just peering over the rocks aimlessly with barely any of his guitar showing, to the point that they zoom in on his floating head to remind us he's there!
And then they zoomed in on the dog at the end of the video and I died! XD XD

Song was pretty decent itself.

Ireland: Ben Howard - Small Things
Oh no, this guy was inspired by Schoenburg's 12 tone system wasn't he.
He definitely thinks there's more driving beat to his song than there is and he's probably hear that is he took his headphones off.
His vocals are good and I like the style, but he needs proper instrumentation, and this isn't it.
Oh, until ~the 2 and a half minute mark! Oh man, if the whole song was like this I'd be far nicer to it!
How interesting.

Philippines: Pentagon - SHINE
Yesss K-Pop Represent! =D
I really enjoyed this, and I have to kame an aside to mention that so much of what makes this genre great is the effort, the choreography. The videos really are integral to the craft and appreciating one without the other means you're missing out!
This one had such a nice storyline to it and it really made the song that much better! Well chosen :)

Bhutan: Jlin - Black Origami
Disorienting beat at the beginning has my interest piqued!
Oh cool, they're going for a disoriented, dissonant feel. Well done! It gives that uneasy feeling like when you know a boss is coming but it hasn't appeared yet.

Macedonia: paniyolo - Aina
<3
That is all

Latvia: Solar Fake - Under The Skies
Intrigued from the techo beginning, good start.
Feels like a DDR song.
Ooo and good deep vocals to go with it! Nicely matched!

Ukraine: Tech N9ne (and others) - Worldwide Choppers
Impressed by the fast rap no doubt.
But it doesn't do anything for me.
Good work though, it is, as I say, impressive!
Oh, I get it, they're going around the world with different rappers from different countries, ya? Cool.
I did get bored well before it was done though.
If you can't hear what they're saying then what's the point of the mad rhymes they're spittin'?
Ya dig?

Hong Kong: Arion ft Elize Ryd - At The Break of Dawn
Had to find an alt like, nbd tho.
Oh, I like this kind of rock too in moderation. It's got movement, feeling, action, and it's not overly affected or screamy!

I had to do a lot of shuffling around, but I think I'm happy with where the songs all ended up. Some decent ones couldn't make the list and for that I apologize!
Good contest :)

I always enjoy comparing what I've said to what Parama has to say. There are some surprising agreements (like Counting Crows) and some interesting differences in view which I appreciate reading :)

I won't stand for this erasure of Bowling For Soup.
Sorry I was too busy partying like it was 1999!
