Korean Music Thread

hopefully there are enough people on this site that listen to korean music that this merits a thread?
hopefully?

what are yalls favorite artists/songs/albums?

i really like epik high and verbal jint. dynamic duo is fantastic, gaeko's voice is amazing. leessang is hit or miss but when they hit, its awesome, especially gary's solo stuff. i like r&b stuff like bumkey.

outside of hiphop, group wise i love davichi. brown eyed girls puts out great stuff but i'll admit to not knowing anything after black box (which was great). dbsk was great until jyj left and now jyj is great. i'll dip my toes into cnblue and 2am occasionally.

solo wise, kwill is great. kim jong kook's 2005 album is one of my favorite but i will admit to not knowing much beyond that. ailee is good and baek ji young is good. IU used to be grating to me, but then i listened to modern times, and i was like, shit. this is the best album of the year.

i discovered mamamoo today, which prompted me to make this thread. i haven't been this into a group for a long long time.

ha, nice.

Here is an article I found interesting, about korean cultural authenticity in hip hop genre, and about how verbal jint revolutionized hip hop lyricism. if anyone's into that.

In post 15, Apricity wrote:Sunggyu is an amazing singer! And he's the leader of Infinite, which is my favorite kpop group. I watched all of The Genius because he was in it XD Good show.
when I saw Kison's post, I was like THIS IS YOUR CHANCE lol.

And yeah, I've listened to a bunch of b2st throughout the years. fiction's really just the best song, though. the instrumentals are fantastic.

It's been pretty cool to experience the trajectory of korean music in the US. Like, my earliest memory in that regard was probably people who weren't into k-pop hearing about the Wonder Girls, and that was like in 2009 or 2010. Then Girls Generation became a thing, and to a lesser extent like, Big Bang and such. Then PSY had a few hit songs. Now BTS is a legitimate big thing in America. It's pretty interesting.

I remember once, one of my (not korean) friends who is into all the various kpop trends told me "its funny that all the kpop you listen to is like from before 2012" and i thought... well yeah. that was the shit i grew up listening to. Imagine that.

Group of good looking guys with carefully crafted media personalities, with plenty of "sneek peek into our daily lives" content and strong social media presence
