Hugs are pretty common hello/goodbyes even with casual acquaintances
Kiss on the cheek seems more personal also please don't put your wet lips on my face unless I want you to

The latter happens quite a lot here, though it usually involves atleast one woman.

Cheek to cheek or lips to cheek?
Former is a normal greeting in many cultures latter is way more intimate than a casual hug.
Hugs of course can vary a lot though.

Kiss.
You can see hug signals from a distance.
The amount of 'friendly' 40-50yo men who feel comfortable just kissing me on the cheek randomly will never ceases to make me want to curl up into a ball and die.
Unwanted hugs are easier and don't leave cold wet feelings on your face.

Lips to cheek.
Uhh I dunno where you're from exactly, but cheek to cheek is the industry standard around here, and most other European places I've been. The side of your lips might touch their cheek, but you're certainly not supposed to plant a sloppy smooch on there.

As for the question, I've been told not to hug before, but the hug was an alternative option for the kiss already. We fist bump now. So I guess the progression is kiss > hug > fist bump/high five/handshake > wave.

I voted for "kiss on cheek" purely based on how I treat my own relatives: the only people in my family that I am fine with kissing them on the cheek are my nan and gran, whereas I am perfectly fine with hugging any other member of my family.

like korts said its not really a proper kiss to cheek kind of thing. it's more cheek to cheek and kissing the air, maybe the sides of your lips touch but id prefer this to being embraced by a hug

In that case, hugging is definitely more intrusive. Kissing a clean and shaven left cheek signifies love and respect among no-homo straight men.
